Tickets for the Final Four, Lake Placid NY

Re: Tickets for the Final Four, Lake Placid NY

Potsdam had a 7:30 game that night also, and I made it from the dorm after the USA-USSR game to Maxcy just in time for the opening faceoff.

Maybe Plattsburgh could not get a Canadian station at that time. If the nearby ones weren't giving out a strong enough signal and they weren't on the local cable (which back then barely had any stations), then they may not have known.

Plattsburgh did have CBC on cable because I watched the game with my wife and we both broke into tears when the game was ending. 3 days earlier we were at the USSR - Canada game. Canada actually took a one goal lead in the game at one time. You should have seen the kids flocking around Scotty Bowman (he was sitting in the next section over from us) The game was great, but just walking around the village of Lake Placid was an unbelievable feeling. By the way, the transportation problem was really a bunch of hype. We parked our car on the Stevens lot (farms were used as parking lots) in Wilmington, boarded a schoolbus and were dropped off in front of the oval less than 20 minutes later. The whole trip from Plattsburgh until we were dropped off in the village was just a little over an hour.

As I remember, it was not the "transportation" that was a problem, so much as the difficulty getting tickets. I was living in Peru, NY at the time, and there was a catch 22 with tickets. Couldn't get one without going to LP, but couldn't get into LP without one. I will always be grateful to the city of Plattsburgh. They bought 3,000 assorted tickets, brought them to city hall, and sold them to the public. I was fortunate enough to buy two pairs of hockey tickets to what became the West Germany game, and the Gold Medal game.

The transportation problem really was a problem the first few days of the Olympics. It was a disaster after the Opening Ceremonies (even the athletes were walking back to the Village), and pretty bad a few days later when I was waiting for a ride back from the Luge. They got it straightened out afterward. Luckily, I usually relied on the worker buses, but those times I didn't, it was a problem early on.

You are probably right about that part because some other people said Rt 73 for people coming from the south was bumper to bumper, but Rt 9N to Rt 86 was just a little slower than normal.

The problem was there was no buses. There was some sort of labor dispute going on, and Lake Placid had contracted a Canadian company to provide all the buses. Remember, only locals and workers were allowed to drive within the town's limits. The border patrol union sympathized with whatever labor union was having issues, so they "found" all sorts of problems with the buses, and refused them entry into the U.S.

The Olympic Committee had to scramble to get buses, and ended up grabbing as many as they could from all the local school districts. But this took a few days, so the first few days, it was terrible.

I don't remember how my wife heard about our tickets, but we got them from a guy that lived on Silver Lake Rd between AuSable Forks and Black Brook.

That's interesting Russell, as I remember being in Kindergarten and we had a 2 week "winter break" because my school had to send their buses to Placid.
Good reading......

If I remember Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and AuSable Valley had combined spring break and mid winter vacation and were closed for the 2 weeks anyway.

The Saranac Lake High School was one of the park-and-ride lots for picking up the buses.

My memory is a little fuzzy since I was so young unlike others.....:D
I will never forget my great uncle coming to the house telling us the news, I remember the excitement in the house. Gotta love the game for all the great memories we have!

Speaking of High School, Both Plattsburgh High School and St Lawrence Central are in the Div 2 final 4 in Utica tommorrow. Not bad for the North Country.

Kinda strange to think that the last Champlain Valley school to take a state title (3 out of 4, to be precise) hasn't existed for 20 years. Great to see PHS back up to their standards from when I was going there, in any case - there were some pretty lean years in the interim.

Real Lean! PHS has really built the program back up under coach Jamie Reidy, Former Plattsburgh Cardinal!

Peru/Saranac had quite a run last year (bit of a fall-off this year) under former Cardinal Trevor Cameron, too.

Good to see the old boys giving back, eh?
