The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

No respect at all in the HE preseason review for a team that has been to two consecutive NCAA tournaments and returns nearly the same D and goaltending. Yup, questions up front and the loss of Pacan is crushing, but I still think the Cats have the makeup to surprise.

I hope the lack of respect from the media and coaches and underdog status motivates them.

Medvec did not return for any other reason than to dominate at this level.

I agree, I really believe that the Cats will challenge for home ice and an NCAA bid. Especially if Madore remains consistent throught the year like he did his freshman year. There seems to be IMO an over emphasis on how much scoring a team loses. It's as if a player scored 20 pts playing second fiddle then that's all they are going to score, and yet year after year that player picks it up when they get more first line time and more PP time.

Certainly the offense is a question mark, but it was last season too after Stalberg left and the critics were counting the Cats out. While they weren't an offensive powerhouse they managed and they will this year as well.

GO CATS GO. Need a split this weekend and hopefully more to shut the critics up and start the season on a positive.

40-0 wouldn't silence "certain" critics....

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Would like to see a replay of that goal that was disallowed via a tripping call on Downing. If may have been a legitimate call but Sneddon certainly was not happy with it and he's usually a straight shooter. That was a huge momentum swing, if that one counts the Cats are up 3 and looking very good.

Some real bad bounces are what let Denver back into the game. their first goal the puck bounced right over the blade of the UVM Dman to create a turnover. UVM had several other near goals where the puck bounce don them.

And PLEASE hit the net with some shots. Stalburg got all alone in the slot and whipped it high and wide.....

Murray prevented a late tie when he gloved that one timer right in front off Downings stick. What a sick set up by MacKenzie. That was almost a certain goal but it just hit the open glove. The guy next to me was already jumping up celebrating it looked so certain to be a goal.

All in all I liked the play from VT except their power play. Like usual that was pretty much abysmal. My next Victory Club donation is in the name of a powerplay consultant.

I thought Bruneteau had a couple of rough plays defensively but I like him with the puck. He's going to be our top assist D for the next four years, possibly better than anyone we have seen in a UVM uniform in a LONG time.
Brickley also impressed. UVM's first line looked better than I woudl have expected. Overall I thought they outplayed Denver but Murray was infinitely better than Madore. I was disappointed with Madore as he got eaten alive up high and four goals on the first 18 shots does not get it done.

Don't have to worry about that now...

I'm assuming Medvec didn't "dominate at this level" during Denver? ;)

Nice recap. Although I think it was defensive breakdowns that made Madore look bad.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

If this season turns out like last year, minus all the drama of player personnel issues, then it would be fine by me. Another trip to the NCAA would continue to set this program on an elite path.

UVM lost to Denver game 1 last year and came out with a win the next night. The game 1 loss was the only blemish on their out of confererence record and got them into the NCAA's. Lets hope for a similar game 2 tonight with a split.

Would like to see a replay of that goal that was disallowed via a tripping call on Downing. Tough call for the referee, I was sitting down on that end near the glass. When the DU player came around the net, he was slipping and fumbling the puck; Downing was reaching for the puck. There was no trip but since the DU player went down and the net & goalie blocked the ref's vantage point, it was a phantom call. It is going to happen, heck it happens more than once in every game.

UVM got that 1st goal on the PP and it had me thinking this was going to be a different year, PP wise. Guess I put my rose colored glasses on too soon.

Don't have to worry about that now...

Sometimes domination by a player doesn't necessarily show up in the box score with goals and assists. Other things like hits, stopping Zucker on a one on one with minimal effort, making the 1st pass out of the D zone like defensement are supposed to do can be considered good things.

Although I think it was defensive breakdowns that made Madore look bad.

The breakdowns were both by the D on the ice and the forwards not back checking. Pretty sure this will get fixed, possibly as early as tonights game.

At the :26 second mark, you'll see the disallowed goal. Sure looks like the defenseman lost an edge to me....though you can see the referee had a bad vantage point to make the call. That was a huge play in the game, and definitely changed the momentum.

Some thoughts on the game:

1. Stacey gets the hat trick (and could have gotten a 4th one), he looked very active and dangerous all game long.

2. Bruneteau is playing as advertised, very smart player, makes the right pass all of the time.

3. Brickley had some great plays at times...and at other times tried to do a bit too much and was dispossessed. He'll learn quickly what he can and can't do at the college level. I think he can be dominant with his speed, size, and shot.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

The UVM AD just killed the refs from Friday nights game on the radio broadcast. Usually you don't hear someone in that position be that opinioniated. He is claiming they reviewed the tapes and the UVM disallowed goal and the first Denver goal were both incorrect calls. Just shows you how momentum plays a huge role in the college game --- or maybe we need some of the upperclassmen to step up and take care of the leadership. That seemed like a problem last year --- we shouldn't be giving up 4 unanswered goals at home.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Overall the better team got the better results the weekend. UVM is nowhere near as deep. Not a fan of the lines seems as though there isn't any cohesion on the offensive end. The defense really was supposed to be our strenght. The had brutal TOs on both nights and they also made some brutal decisions. Madore needs to stay sharp. I will say we can play with DU and other good teams. But when we make a mistake we get our moneys worth. One more positive note, discipline was good.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Any news on Stacey, he was immense on Friday night and now he's injured and missed most of the game Saturday night......

All in all I liked the effort this weekend. Some tough bounces and some bad calls against that cost them on Friday and Saturday they were down their best forward to an early injury. They look like they will be ok in the conference to me if they play like that. big if because last year they did not but I suspect they will play the underdog role this year and it will motivate them.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

The team improved alot from Sunday to Friday, I am definately more encouraged than I was on Sunday night. A few thoughts...

Powerplay - so far very predictable and the results show

Brickley - getting more comfortable and is ready to breakout

Bruneteau - like the passing ability but needs to learn to get rid of his shot faster when faceoff is won to him, needs to learn to step right into the shot like Lawson does.

Leonard - has come along way since last year, not a surprise to see him getting so much ice time anymore.

Lawson - a few more hits like that would make teams dump alot more on his side

Lenz, DeCenzo & White - alot of energy and hustle we can only hope the points will come as well

Did the AD say anything about the 7 power plays UVM was awarded vs. 1 for Denver on Friday?;)

Seriously, I thought the reffing was very good in both games and they let the players play for the most part- enabling lots of speed and flow, and produced very entertaining hockey.

UVM showed better discipline on the weekend.

Maybe it's my green and gold colored fan glasses but I thought the reffing was horrendous on Friday night. The penalties were lopsided but there were several missed and gawd forbid the refs actually figure out the new icing.

I didn't get to go to Sat. game, but I was definitely not impressed with the officiating on Friday. Even if you take away the no goal call, it was still terrible. But, it's all part of the game and you play with what you get.

Very early on in this thread I spoke about what you might expect from Matt White during his time at Vermont. Not the kind of kid that necessarrily shows up in the stats but one who brings it every night.

How did he fair grade-wise over the weekend?

Faceoffs:
Physicality:
Hustle:
Chances:

I know he is only a freshman, but I think you will love watching the kid every game.
