The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I don't know if it was ever mentioned on the broadcast (I never heard it) but it should be noted that UNB was missing 3 of their top 6 defenceman (and 2 of their top 4....with all three being former NHL draft picks), one of their top-6 forwards, and was playing their backup goalie.

you were better off playing this team, some actual competition than, well, Toronto............

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I see this team - at least in the early part of the year - going back to the Fallon years where they score 1 or 2 goals and win a nail biter, or get a tie. Hopefully the forwards can score but I don't have rose colored glasses on yet. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Did not get proven wrong today. If Madore plays entire game, then this is a 1-1 tie or 2-1 win.

hopefully the Cats never have to throw that lineup of forwards out there again minus Stalburg, McCarthy and Nilsson-Roos - there is not enough speed and creativity....

Obviously Mackenzie and whomever his partner was on the late PP with the open net was a disaster (they ran into each other and coughed up the puck on a 2 on 0 the other way with no netminder- total disaster).

Among the freshmen I did not see anyone that looked lights out but I liked what they did for the most part...Bruneteau also looked pretty good with the puck. He's not big but he's going to be good I think. Brickley had some moments...

Stacey, Downing had some Burrows had a few moments with the puck but we definitely lack a high scoring first line.

Stalberg and McCarthy were missed. Hopefully what ever they did, they realize how much they hurt the team so they don't duplicate their transgressions.

"Whomever" on the PP was Miller. It was like watching 2 mites fight over the puck, and what is worst, at the blue line. Good thing this game did not count.

Bruneteau played very poised, nice late addition to the recruiting class. Comes from a hockey family with 2 brothers playing D1 hockey and a grandfather who played in the NHL. You notice his "hockey sense" and wish others on the team had it too.

Brickley created a great scoring chance for Downing in the 2nd period with an open ice hit on the UNB defenseman who lost the puck and Downing got the puck in open ice and was not able to finish. If that is the type of player Brickley is, he will be fun to watch all season.

Burrows is not a center, probably was taking faceoffs with 8 and 3 out of the lineup. Put him back at a wing spot and let him focus 100% on shooting and scoring and he will be fine.

Seemed like Stacey was letting the canadiens kids get under his skin. With the lack of depth on this team, he can not afford to sit out a game with a disqualification. Have to learn to walk away.

I am guessing Stalberg and McCarthy will be on the PP unit(s). That should help a little bit.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

How often does the GWG come on a emtpy net?

Did we ever have any sustained puck control in the offensive zone?

On a bright note I really liked Bruneteau and Brickley has skill. The penalty kill looked very good, I liked the pressure on the points they showed.

Madore looked like he did in UNH last year.

Hard to judge the forwards with out those 3 softs out, cant think any of those lines we saw are going to stay together with the others back. Defense was not giving good breakout passes thus we seldom had any good rushes.

Several of the frosh had the YIPS yesterday, panic dumping or icing or shooting from bad angles or too far out. Hopefully they will realx soon and let the plays develop.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Well I have to say I am feeling rather optimistic compared to the rest of you :

I thought Madore was definitely in mid season form. I thought for the most part the D looked pretty good. Sure there was the collision at the blue line that caused a goal, but outside of that I thought they looked pretty solid for the first game of the season and mixed up pairings.

The offense seemed to play well when they were BEING AGGRESSIVE. First period was even, but the second and most of the third they were definitely back on their heels.

I was impressed with Decenzo, and Brickley showed a lot of jump and some creativity that didn't pan out. Not a concern at this point, the lines were all jumbled up. I thought White also looked pretty good, and he will be a key frosh this year.

At this point, I'm not jumping ship on the offense yet. The frosh were playing the majority of the ice time and with limited practice. They all need to learn to play with intensity and be aggressive more. But it wasn't a terrible first game.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Will be nice to see Stalberg and McCarthy next weekend assuming they don't do anything dumb and get their suspensions extended

Where was it reported that Stalberg was suspended? Actually where was it reported that McCarthy was suspended?

I can't seem to find anything on it.

How did Matt white look...appears he had a late assist?

Free Press today said they were both serving a 1 game suspension for violating the student code of conduct etc etc.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

was very impressed with new brunswick's speed and puck movement--looked like a team with 8 games under their belts.i think uvm is going to be fine once everyone gets up to game speed.the freshmen looked a little tentative at times but that will iron itseelf out.i expect to see the d jumping in ther rush alot more. with all the experience on the d-would love to see the fowards pin their ears back and really foreckeck aggresively.would certainly get the crowd in the game.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Not to nitpick but UNB had played 6 games before yesterday...I don't know where the announcers got the 8 from. Although at that point (6 games as opposed to 8) the difference is probably negligible...

Yeah, six UNB games versus 1 or 2 practices for UVM. Pretty big difference, but then who cares - that is why they call it an exhibition. UVM would not have played all three netminders in a game that counts and Madore did not look likely to get beat by either of the two goals that UNB generated on the Vazzano brothers.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

OK on to DU. Any predictions for line combos? Power play units? Sneddon said postgame had a couple of center play who never had and wants to get the whole lineup back. If thats the case, McCarthy and Stahlberg likely wont be together. When they were together last year,WOW. Thoughts???

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

You could see one of two teams from DU this weekend. The good one that manhandled Team USA-U18s and the bad one that skated in slow motion against Lethbridge.

NCAA rules that limit practices so severely before the season starts seem ludicrous. Two hrs, per week with the coaches for 2 weeks and then regular practice begins the day of the first exhibition. Somehow I doubt that football and basketball have the same restriction.

Madore

Lawson - Miller
Medvec - Bruneteau
Mackenzie - Franzon

Brickley - McCarthy - Downing
Burrows - Stalberg - Stacey
White - Marshall - Lenz
Decenzo - Leonard - Roos(or Herrington if Roos hurt)

.....just a prediction from left field

Actually, I think this will be very close. Maybe switch Decenzo and Lenz, JMO but I really liked Decenzo out there, he was very agressive. Definitely someone that could help the offense generate some, at the same time UVM has always had a very high energy 4th line too so it could go either way. Same with Stalberg and McCarthy, I could see Seb on the first line or the second line.

Just a note, I also thought there appeared to be a little more jump in Marshall's step during that game. Hopefully he can get it together and play more like and NHL draftee, if he can't find a way to produce Sneddon needs to set him riding the pine next season when there is a bit more depth at forward.

I thought White looked pretty good, considering it's his first game. UNB is a great skating team and I didn't think Matt looked like he was way behind anyone. He does need to adjust to some extent, but not as much as may have been expected considering his move back to his HS team.

That's too bad, It seemed the most likely but I was hoping that wasn't the case, at least with Stalberg. Glad to see Sneddon handled the situation...and hopefully the dismissal of Pacan, and suspensions of Stalberg and McCarthy get the message through to this years frosh that they need to abide the rules.

I agree, but after last years mess, I would think these kids would get the message.

Sometimes I forget these guys are college kids, and will do " whatever college kids do" Let's just hope this is the end of it, and they get these distractions behind them.

I agree. Sounds like Sneddon and Miller are both of the attitude that the off ice drama will be kept at a minimum. Both made points of discussing it and possibly this is kind of a pre-emptive strike in that regards. I'm just guessing but sending a message early in the year maybe trying to make up for letting things go through half the season last year.

Without being in the locker room it's hard to say what occurred but maybe Milo was getting a little bit of slack through the first half. This year Sneddon is trying to nip it in the bud?

Just a thought, but I think we all agree the locker room goings on nearly cost them a trip to the NCAA's last year... no need to try and derail another season.

I really liked the way Miller spoke frankly about last year in the Freep.
Not sure if one guy is going to be able harness the behavior. Let''s hope the culture has changed in the locker room.
