The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Q: What can you tell us about this year’s trio of goaltenders, led by Rob Madore who is back for his third season?

KS: Rob will be our number one out of the gate this year. He has done a lot of preparation mentally and physically to start this season where he left off last year. I thought he was one of the best goalies in the country down the stretch. He will be pushed by Alex and John Vazzano this year which will be good for Rob and certainly good for the development of Alex as well as John.

I'm a little surprised by this.

Yea, UVM is the only one to have morals and kick kids off the team.

Where did I say ONLY ONE?

The comment was a jab at the Jets, or was the next sentence after not obvious enough for you? You would think anyone from Boston would get that.

What is surprising about this? Did you expect the coach to say there would be no competition? Not trying to flame, but just curious to what UVM fans think. I know Madore has led you guys to two NCAA Tournaments and he is your obvious number one, but the younger Vazzano is very good.

I think most of us expected an initial rotation with Madore and Vazzano Jr. Or at least split time. Rob had a great freshman year and was very good down the stretch last year, however he was shaky at times in the beginning of the season. Moreover, after coming off a FF appearance, Sneddon essentially split time between Madore and Spillane giving each a chance to win the spot. So although I'm not shocked I expected somewhat of a rotation.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

From Ted Ryan :

Former University of Vermont men’s hockey forward David Pacan, who was dismissed this week from the team for violations of the UVM student-athlete code of conduct, has signed with the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League, according to the team’s Web site.

Pacan, who led UVM freshmen with seven goals, had been drafted by Niagara in the 2007 priority draft. He joined the IceDogs for Wednesday night’s season-opener.

Pacan bypassed the OHL to attend Vermont. He is a 2010 NHL sixth-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks.

By joining the major junior league, Pacan will forego the final three years of his NCAA eligibility.

What surprised me about your statement is that your included John Vazzano.
From what I have seen, he won't be competing for a starting job. I do think that Madore will be getting plenty of competition from the his younger brother Alex. I expect a goalie rotation this year.

Madore had some injury issues last year so Spillane split time and played (plus he was a senior and a good goalie). Once Spillane got hurt, Madore was healthy enough to go. I see Madore as playing at least 70% of the games with Vazz Jr. playing a lot in the 2 exhibition games. It is a big step from Prep to NCAA hockey.

I see this team - at least in the early part of the year - going back to the Fallon years where they score 1 or 2 goals and win a nail biter, or get a tie. Hopefully the forwards can score but I don't have rose colored glasses on yet. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

What a shame, that is a big loss for us. Pacan should have signed with b.c. he would still be playing this season along side Parker Milner, Phillip Sameulsson and Patrick Wey!

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

personally, i expect Madore to get 80% of the playing time (at least). Yes, he had a battle last season with inconsistency but was the man when they needed him most. I have thought for two seasons he is one of the best in the country and is a clear cut number 1 for uvm. Alex Vazzano will probably see some time but not a bunch, remember this program is at a state now where they expect to get to the ncaa's each season .....and it's an extremely fine line of who's in and who's out come March. Don't expect a rotation this year at all unless Madore overwhelmingly dissapoints.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

looking foward to see the new recruits and returning players finally play some hockey.i think uvm is going to surprise alot of people this year with their offense.the defense is rock steady and expect to see them jump in the play alot more this year and provide more offense.looks like new brunswick is going to be a strong test for uvm sunday.alot of questions will be partially answered on sunday----let the season begin.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

If Madore is consistent then he should get the minutes I guess as a proven goalie. But, if he's inconsistent like much of last season (until the latter stages) then I hope one of the Vazzanos steps in and can handle it.

I was pretty high on this team until Pacan got dismissed. I was pretty sold on him being a 15 to 20 goal guy this season. I think his departure is crushing to their offensive depth (particularly if we see any other injuries up front) and I think his replacement is likely a 0 to 3 goal guy and that is a HUGE drop off for an offensively challenged team. Even losing his 7 goals last year and replacing it with a fourth line production of a goal or two would have had them miss the HE and NCAA playoffs.

I do think the D has more offensive potential but I thought the same thing in the summer of 2009 and they were not even solid on D for most of the early season - let alone contribute to the score sheet.

I hope Bruneteau is the PP quarterback that we so desperately need.

The only hope to have a solid offensive team is that several of the freshmen are true high impact players like Mitchell was. Brickley certainly has a shot at being that but only time will tell.

Looking forward to getting GAME ON to see what we have.....

Maybe we can move another defensemen to forward. Lawson would be a good power forward and impossible to move from in front of the net.

I recall he played forward a couple games back when this class of seniors were freshmen. I have always thought Lawson would be the guy you want screening the goalie on the power play. He has offensive instincts and good hands, so have to think he would get to a rebound or 2 and bang them in for goals.

I really think Sneddon is gonna give this kid a shot to be in a solid goalie rotation.

Here is an interesting article on Alex:

This article had him going to Union. There loss is our gain !

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Alex V. decommitted from Union to join his brother at UVM

He never got drafted thought that I know of

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

The UVM website scouting report on UNB has a few minor mistakes:

SCOUTING THE VARSITY REDS
The New Brunswick Varsity Reds are located in Fredericton, New Brunswick and play in the Atlantic University Sport Conference ... The Varsity Reds are off to a 7-0 start to the season after a 10-3 win against St. Mary’s last Saturday ... New Brunswick went 27-1 during its regular season a year ago ... UNB lost in the semifinals of the AUS Playoffs ... Head Coach Gardiner MacDougall was the 2009-10 AUS Coach of the Year while Hunter Tremblay was the Player of the Year ... Tremblay had 27 goals and 25 assists for 57 points in 27 games ... Eight of his goals were games winners and he also had five short-handed tallies ... John Scott Dickson also returns this season and had 17 points and 23 assists for 40 points in 27 games last year ... Goaltender Travis Fullerton is back for his third year after posting a 2.09 goals against average last season ... New Brunswick defeated Vermont 3-2 at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Oct. 4 last year ... Hunter Tremblay, Kyle Bailey and Chris Culligan each had goals.

Correction: UNB comes into the game 6-0 in the preseason. John Scott Dickson has graduated.

Stuff they don't have:
UNB only has one recruit this year, 6'4" forward Nick MacNeil, since they only graduated one player, and they had another leave school over the summer. However, CIS All-Rookie Team defenceman Ben Shutron broke his femur against Calgary last month and will be gone for the season. Ben Wright, another top-4 d-man, injured his knee against Calgary, and is gone until Christmas. Finally, another top-6 d-man (top-4 this year), 6'5" Josh Kidd didn't make the trip, and I don't know why. Also on the injury front, should-be-top-6 forward Taylor Procyshen, who missed most of last season with concussion issues, has missed the last few games this season.

Other than that, this is the UNB team that went 27-1 last season! ;)

bummer, couldn't make it to the game today so wanted to watch on PPV on nsn sports, cheaper this year than B2 networks and supports the local work of George C and Jack H......site seems to be a little messed up today though, can't get in.

Really? I'm watching it right now from Fredericton.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Thoughts on the game:

UNB was all over the Cats most of the game

hopefully the Cats never have to throw that lineup of forwards out there again minus Stalburg, McCarthy and Nilsson-Roos - there is not enough speed and creativity....

Madore was excellent, looked to be in his late season form. If he plays like that next weekend we'll have a chance

Did not notice the D too much, Franzon got beat wide at least once and UND had a lot of overpassing but they had a ton of opportunities. Obviously Mackenzie and whomever his partner was on the late PP with the open net was a disaster (they ran into each other and coughed up the puck on a 2 on 0 the other way with no netminder- total disaster). Why such a big D corps does not do more hitting is beyond me, Lawson in particular could lay some crushing hits but I think he would rather rush and dangle the puck.

Among the freshmen I did not see anyone that looked lights out but I liked what they did for the most part. Lenz and Decenzo remind me some of Strong with a two way game. Bruneteau also looked pretty good with the puck. He's not big but he's going to be good I think. Brickley had some moments but I think my expectations were too high - nice to see him score though. Nice shot but the netminder should have come out further and would have had it.

Overall I was not impressed by the team speed and our PP looked dismal as always.

Stacey, Downing had some Burrows had a few moments with the puck but we definitely lack a high scoring first line.

It was a depleted lineup but also obvious we are not going to win with our offensive firepower. Sneddon needs to get a consultant in to fix the PP as that is where the goals are going to need to come from

Nice attempt at a comeback.. Will be nice to see Stalberg and McCarthy next weekend assuming they don't do anything dumb and get their suspensions extended

If Madore plays like he did tonight all season we'll have a chance in most games, but we won't win a lot if we don't figure out how to have a productive power play
