The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Season can't start soon enough. Woodchuck tourney at the Gut this weekend but nothing compares to the real thing at the next level.

Noticed new head shots, height and weights are updated on the UVM website. Looked at the women's team picture and they are wearing Reebok gloves - did the school switch equipment suppliers this season? Nike/Bauer to Bauer and now Reebok? Looks like the jerseys are the same though.

The returning D pretty much all put on extra pounds from last year - MacKenzie 195 to 203; Medvec 225 to 229; Miller 205 to 208; Herrington 208 to 210 and Lawson 246 to 251. Hope it is muscle and not fat.

Noticeable increases in forwards - McCarthy up 13 pounds; Stalberg up 8 pounds; Pacan up 11 pounds; and Marshall up 8 pounds. More impressive is Stacey is down 7 pounds, maybe this enhances his quickness and stamina??

NCAA rules allow coaches to start limited practice sessions of 2 hours per week with the team after the 15th of September. Plus another hour in small group sessions. It is getting close.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Dave Pacan and Chris McCarthy will be unavailable for the exhibition game against New Brunswick. Pacan will also be unavailable for the fist Denver game

Injuries ?

Seems to be too early for injuries as practice has not started yet - might be discipline or school issues? Perhaps whitaker can expand his comment without exposing his sources.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

The team is skating --- Captain's practices, no? Every other D1 team is...

There's no reason they couldn't be injuries, these kids workout all summer long and though there are no formal practices they are on the ice. There is certainly plenty of possibility that there is muscle pull or something along those lines.

The New Brunswick game doesn't really matter, in previous years Sneddon has played a lot of the freshman and McCarthy could simply be sitting for that reason. I doubt it but it is a possiblity. Pacan who knows?

It could be discipline issues as well though. After the Milo saga last year I hope they aren't starting already with these issues though.

USCHO article listing Vermont as 1 of 5 teams that have never won a NC that have a shot to do so.

Of note they list Milo as one of UVM's scoring leaders coming back this season?? Someone really dropped the ball on that one...

Interesting stat though combining Goal and Defense, they have 464 total games played.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

You can't be serious about Pacan being an injury. Yeah, three weeks out and they know he can't play Friday night but he'll be ready to go on Saturday. Hello.

It's called discipline.

And Stacey losing all those pounds in interesting. It's not like he was real big to start with. Mccarthys add is far more intriguing IMHO.

This team is built on D, goaltending and young forwards, I would not count on much out of the Sr. or Jr forwards although I think that Borrows can be an impact forward after moving up from D. Downing, Stacey and Marshall will not be impact players, the sophs and Frosh will.

The forwards and D are somewhat out of balance age wise, but that means they won't have a horrible performance crash when the D graduate after this year also.

Should be a fun year, and a fun four years ahead.

Did you read a press release? Article in the paper? I haven't seen anything other then what Whitaker reported and nowhere in his post did is say he will be back for the Saturday game. It only states he will not play the friday game. So yes I can be serious, as I'm not so ignorant to believe that there lies no other possibilities. Moreover, I noted that injuries was a possibility along with this discipline, so get your panties out of a bunch for christ's sake, it's the beginning of the season.

They are both possibilities, unless you and hokydad are withholding inside information there is no way you can know otherwise.

I also disagree with regards to Stacey, he can be an impact player. He isn't a guy that is going to step up and have 25 goals, but he is a great playmaker. If he is healthy he has 40-50 points in him. But I do agree that outside of Stacey and Burrows the underclassmen will be relied upon to generate the majority of the offense.

attended the woodchuck classic saturday and was quite impressed with the speed, quickness and skill of the junior players.anthoine and fergione from the glades, uvm recriuts, played well and will be nice additions when thay arrive.what a great tournament for coaches to scout not only the american players but the canadian players as well.there must have been over 50 scouts and coaches ckecking things out.after seeing some live hockey---let the season begin.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Nice to see UVM get some consideration as one of the programs vying for their first national title in the near future. I agree and think that if the Cats don't lose too many guys early that they have a legit shot at it in the next six years, this season included with the veteran D and some impact freshmen.

Go Cats.

Okay, who is going to call the athletic department and ask them to get it done?
Penn State in the 2012-2013 Catamount Cup!!!

Nittany Lions are after ... Pennsylvania Catamounts.

UNB swept their Alberta tour, beating Calgary twice, 10-2 Wednesday and 6-1 Saturday and arch-rival University of Alberta 6-2 Friday night. It was a costly trip, as the V-Reds lost defenceman Ben Wright for 4 to 6 weeks thanks to a knee-on-knee hit that wasn't penalized, and worse, it sounds like Ben Shutron, named to last year's CIS All-Rookie Team, might have a broken femur from a hit that got a Calgary player a major and a game for tripping in the second game against the Dinos.

The Alberta-UNB game was heavily anticipated; sort of the CIS version of Lakers-Celtics. Alberta and UNB have combined to win 5 of the last 6 University Cups, and when UNB was upset last season in the playoffs it was conference rival Saint Mary's who advanced to Nationals and ended up beating Alberta for the school's first hockey championship.

The webcast of the Alberta-UNB game is archived on the SSN website: http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/1475/

The fansite for the V-Reds is UNBHockeyFans.com and the official site is at vreds.unb.ca

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Thanks for the update on NB

Hopefully nobody on either side gets injured on Oct 3

Just looking for a fun game to see what the Cats have to offer this year

Last year NB won in OT IIRC. That was pretty much a harbinger of things to come for the up and down Cats. I have higher expectations of the Cats this year despite being young up front

I'm ready for some hockey....

Fall arrives in six hours, lets get some banter going.

I almost miss the UML hooligans that filled our thread with woof last year and then saw their team hang their hype out to dry.

at this pace, there will not be a need for a "Part 2"

Don't worry, they'll be back with false hope again this year :D Kinda funny how they're gonna be even worse than last year too... (the fans and the team)

Nah, it's a bit of a rotation. Last year it was UML (and the end of the year before) the year before it was the NU when Theissen was hot.

I'm thinking this year with the off-season talk I am expecting it will be MC. They seem to be pretty high on themselves and I really don't expect they will be anywhere near the 5th place predicition. It will depend on their first few games, they do well and Da Costa will be the second coming of Christ, they do poorly and they will fade to black...

Of note, I haven't seen much of UMLGoon on any of the threads and he was the biggest flamer of the bunch.

And heck you can always get the BC fans going...

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

INCH's A-Z spotlight chose Stalberg to highlight from the Cats, no surprise there. Nothing much in the little blurb but what was interesting was this :

"Stalberg was a popular name among the college free agent class last spring, but elected to return to Burlington instead of joining his brother in the pro ranks."

I didn't realize Sebastian going pro after last season was on the table...

I'm not sure if that excites me or scares me...

Clearly the NHL scouts see something they like in him, and heck he scored more points then Vik did his freshman year by a fairly large margin, but with another good season is he gone? Or does his commitment to stay last year indicate he is likely in for the long haul?

Have to wait and see.
