The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

This thread needs a bit of a wake up call. Seems a bit dead. Any thoughts/predictions for Tuesday night's tilt against umass?

All the threads do ... I don't know if it is the new format or what ... but there seems to be a lot less action overall around here than there used to be.
As for the UMass Game Cats need two points ... then two more on Friday at home against Northeastern ...

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I would not be overconfident going into this UMA game. The more desperate team will win.

UVM D has underperformed season to date

UVM forwards have underperformed my expectations, particularly stalberg, borrows, marshall, Downing

Madore and Stacey have been the only bright spots

The Cats can forget the NCAA's for this year, they will be lucky to finish 6th in HE.

Next two years will be brighter though.

That sounds about right. Surprised to hear this coming from you. Usually you're the optimistic one

I agree. 2 points tonight is not a given. They're on the road against a team that's desperate for a win and it's been 10 days since their last game--plenty of time for them to lose the intensity they skated with against BC.

I disagree with Snwbrdr saying we can forget the NCAA's for this year. We've been in most every game and with a bit of luck and some smarter play our record would be much better. There's no reason this team can't get hot and reel off a bunch of wins.

I too would disagree regarding a few of the points.

The offense is averaging 2.5 gpg which is 5th in the league behind BC,BU,ME,UNH. That is much better then I though and hardly underperforming, and 1/3 rd of their games at this point has been against BC which has the second lowest GAA at this early stage (2GAA). So I think the offense is performing relitively well compared to my expectations. Sure I would love to see them putting up 5 gpg and the 2.5 seems pretty low, but when put into perspective the other teams its actually not too bad.

The defense, I don't think they have underperformed so much as they have really been unable to put together 60 min. They play solid for large parts of the game and then just blow it for a short periods that are costly. I think to some degree the pressure of trying to carry the team got to them. They need to focus on playing solid hockey, nothing extraordinary, just a solid 60.

Regarding the NCAA's, it will depend on how things play out, its waaaaaaaayyy too early to be looking at the NCAA's. Their OCC isn't going to carry them this year as it did last year so they are going to have to step it up and do it in conference. Right now it would appear that UNH, BC, ME, and BU are all going to be in. MC will be a TUC. They need to do well against those teams and win some of those comparisons. The Yale game will also be huge, as will the rest of the ECAC games to garner some of the COP's. The NCAA will take a bit of a streak during conference play but certainly not out of the question.

Regarding UMA, they will be desperate. They will play hard and see that UVM has a single win and maybe the team to get them in the win category. Its away although the Cats have similar records home v. away the past few seasons. UMA has been in almost every game and have played some good teams tought (BU, UNH) and blown others (Army). As always it will come down to who shows up to play. Which UMA teams show up and which UVM team shows up.

They can, should and need to win this game. In past years they have played good teams well and given up points to some of the lower teams. This year they need to take EVERY point and stop this playing to the level of the opponent garbage. I remain optimistic they will come out of this season with a winning record and a shot at the NCAA's.

Well there was a bit of a flamefest going there for a moment, but then everybody gets uptight about it so it's gone. Long week off against a UMA team that has only a few fans on here.

Well that's because the Instigators are gone (and no, I'm not referring to the Boston Bruin's television show with Mike Milbury ;) ) And it's certainly a good thing, because now we can get back to talking about Vermont hockey. Tonight is a complete toss up. Absolutely no idea what's gonna happen, but I have a feeling Madore is gonna have to stand on his head again against a desperate umass team. Let's hope the defense can block more shots and keep rebounds and second chances away from madore.

I could bring up elephants, but honestly the thought of it makes me want to vomit so I'd rather not.

Unfortunately something came up so I won't be in attendance tonight. Good luck to both teams.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I have been pretty optomistic in my preseason expectations the last few years but this team outside of Madore and Stacey have disappointed me. Of course I also had Pacan labeled as their top forward this year and next (before leaving as a JR in my estimation). His departure was crushing, which I noted in my posts at the time and took my HE finish prediction down at least one slot and likely more given the parity in the league.

Getting out everythinged by a bad UML team followed by coughing up a two goal lead in the 3rd to PC pretty much told me what I needed to know about this groups ability and will.

I do think they get better in the 2nd half but it won't be enough to overcome the slow start that they are in the midst of.

And jcarter - 2.5 goals per game is nothing to be excited about and don't compare them to the other HE teams - nobody has played enough games for that to be meaningful. UVM has not really played anyone that good yet either. Denver has struggled, BC is good but never ramps up until 2nd half. UNH and BU are currently the cream of the crop.

NU has struggled mightily but that will not continue. Best we finish is 5th and I think 7to 9 is more likely - hoping that either UMASS or UML are last. They have to win tonight and Friday or they are in deep trouble. BC will light them up on Sunday in a payback game and then comes UNH and probably another payback spanking for that QF series last year (which was awesome by the way).

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

This game is disgusting. Anemic powerplay, completely outshooting the opposition and probably all three goals we've given up (thus far) are due to boneheaded turnovers in our own zone. These losses to bad (really bad) teams are making it less and less likely that UVM do anything at all this year. Well, at least we get a lot more shots on goal than lowell!

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Completely outshoot the crap out of umass and get pummeled. Who's to blame? the Defense? Did Dainton stand on his head or were the quality of shots just not good. Seems like we have absolutely no puck luck this year. Nothing is going this teams way, even when they outshoot everyone. Frustrating :(

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I had a feeling the Cats would lose this game and in this fashion (see UML game), hence my pre-game pessimism

I doubt this team will win another game before January and unfortunately the string of winning seasons ends this year also.

Solid effort by the Cats. We'll make plenty of room in the cellar for you, might as well get comfy.

Well, at least we average more than 12 shots a game.

How they posted nearly 50 shots tonight is miraculous. Passes were not crisp, puck was bouncing, and shots were from far away. The team did a good job cycling the puck in the zone, but always had all three forwards on the same side of the net. As for Dainton, he was not the best goalie, but certainly did control the puck limiting rebounds. Not discounting his ability, some saves throughout the game did appear to be lucky for him.
UMass's goals were epic failures in defense. Goal 1 was on the power-play with Madore going behind the net not returning in time for the open UMass player in front. Don't remember which was 2 and 3, but one was the puck bouncing of sticks and skates on the breakout giving the turnover to a forechecking UMass and a UVM that was on its way out of the zone and the other came from a point shot that was tipped in (three men in green were all behind the goal line).
Third period had a great start with the shorthanded goal in the first minute, but without a quick follow-up, hope faded.
Not a pretty night. Hopefully Friday is an improvement.
While not an excuse at all, it did seem like the refs positioning was interfering with play of both teams. On multiple occassions, the puck carrier would use the ref as a basketball player would set a pick.
Did anyone check the UVM goal called back due to the penalty? McCarthy was pushed down on Dainton who was already sprawled out on the ice in front of the crease.
Were Hansen and McDonald (Refs) protecting Dainton with two interference calls on UVM.
