TIL. Is this eaten straight or do you put stuff on / in it?

My college roommate would add butter and then a cinnamon and sugar mix his mom prepped. So it’s basically Cinnamon Toast Crunch without the crunch or box, and that’s all right by me.

His family was so Norwegian that they’d also make lutefisk. You cannot make that stuff taste good short of deadening your tastebuds.

No one should be eating lutefisk in 2023. The necessity is no longer there.

I swear the existence of British food is the only thing keeping Scandinavians from the title of Worst Cuisine on Earth.

Not Scandinavian, but Finnish food is really no better. A week in the arctic circle and all I ate was salmon or reindeer soup. Or a reindeer burger. Down in Helsinki you could get bear meat in a can

Thankfully there's enough outside influences in Alaska that a lot of game meat and salmon can be processed into something actually tasty.

Is there any Russian influence left? The really heavy, creamy stuff is great. I think it's bastardized French cuisine. It makes Beef Stroganoff look like kale.

Maybe a little bit, especially in akutaq, but there’s a lot of German influence with sausages and smoked fish. Moose meat is actually pretty good and reindeer sausage is *ing delicious.

Do not overlook the Jucy Lucy, wild rice soup or walleye sandwich!!
/tongue firmly in cheek

Jucy Lucy sucks ass. But wild rice soup and walleye sandwiches are amazing.

And I DGAF what anyone says, good riffs on tater tot hotdish are super tasty. (I'm talking not straight up TTHD, but when you make it your own by using things like sweet potato tots and scary outsider ingredients like... spices.)
