The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

You guys would know leaman's style better than me...curious why he didn't change goalies in the first, use a timeout or even let his team have it during a TV timeout

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

The Friars gave up five first period goals and never recovered as the Eagles completed the weekend sweep. The Friars have now not scored a goal in their last 158 minutes and 13 seconds of hockey. They host Lowell on Friday night and need a Umass loss or tie tonight to clinch a playoff spot.

That was incredibly odd. The whole team including the goaltender looked like they didn't know what time the game was going to start. Why there was no time out at 2-0 or especially 3-0, when BC scored 8 seconds after the second goal (a play I would have lifted Beaudry on right there because it was clear he wasn't into it), was baffling to me as well.

Union just clinched the ECAC. Nate should be fired so we can hire the Union coach.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

In the paper today expect no one back so it will be a tough weekend to get in the playoffs, Adams and Schaller both have concussions

Any info on Montesano, Adams and Schaller's health for this weekend?

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

PC will have to play hard and stay out of the box this weekend with all the injuries the reserves must step up

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Another tough game to watch last night, good thing for bud light up in the fof room. Kidding aside, congradulations to Nate and the team for qualifying for the playoffs. Especially for this class of seniors who have never played a playoff series, should be fun for them.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

PC has given up too many goals in the opening two minutes of the first period this season. This shouldn't be happening especially in back to back games.

The Friars are flat and the offense, D and the goaltending are in rough shape going into the playoffs. They need to get it together tonight as much as possible. I do understand the offensive struggles a bit with their top playmaker out with a concussion but the D and goaltending have been terrible.

I'm glad that they make the playoffs but they need to show more than what they are showing now.

I was about to say -- given how PC has played over the last few weeks, and particularly their last few battles with BC and BU, I don't know how much "fun" they'll be having in the playoffs next week. (Play as badly as they did at BC last week and they'll be run out of the building again).

Very obviously, hats off to Leaman for getting the team to respectability this year, but I think most of us knew what the ceiling would be. They've run into the same brick wall post-January as every PC team has now for many years (4 wins in the last 18 games), which shows you how much work Leaman has ahead of him. Injuries haven't helped no doubt but as 91 mentions, the defense has been poor and Beaudry has been off his game lately as well from what I've seen and read.

For them to even be competitive next weekend, they'll have to turn it around like you said 91. I think it's important to at least go out playing well to set the table for next season, or else this season will end on a sour note that, to some degree, will mitigate some of the positive vibes that had been established over the first couple of months.

Amen 2000 but the first goal was to get here now its time to set the bar a little higher and at least take 1 of these playoff games......they have to stay out of the box they can compete 5-5......great job by the coaching staff and I know next year will be even better but for now GO FRIARS and thank you for the season

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

So the Friars finish with 10 wins in HE finish 7th and draw Lowell next week. What are your thoughts about the match up?

I'll take a 7th this year after the last three.

It's Tournament Time!

7th was our ceiling before this season began so despite the last 4 games which cost us the chance to exceed tht ceiling I'd say this is a nice 1st step. I actually think the second step will be tougher. Let's face it there was an eiement of surprise and you had 7 seniors trying to play their way into their first playoff series.

As far as the series goes. UML looked very good on Friday night. Assuming most of it was them and not us making them look good on paper I'd say we should be happy with giving them a run for their money and going home. While I don't think its a lock Schaller is suppose to be able to play. Montesano is out for the year but he is the 13th forward and if Schaller dresses he wouldn't play anyway. I also doubt Adams will play. He is no improvment over what is playing and I'd rather Kaib gets the playoff experence. Schaller's return does allow us to put out 3 solid lines, returning lines to their normal setup. He also takes up a spot on the powr play unit and his presnce on the PK should help also adding the element of a short handed threat, which has been missing the last few weeks. So the key is not only can he return, but can he put the minutes on the ice we need.

The other key obviously is that Beaudry wakes from his recent slumber. the good Beaudry can beat anyone, the bad Beaudry would be giving up goals to the little guys who play between periods. Other than that maybe he could get borrow LaCasse for the weekend

To an extent I think they lucked out catching UML as opposed to the either of the Killer B's

You are of course correct about the ceiling. Let's be real if in Oct you said we would finish 7th all of us would be thrilled.. Ending strong though is a combo of a few things though. First you have to have the talent that can get better as the season goes on. That way you can play a little quicker, have a familarity and some sense of knowing what we are doing. Overall I think their still is a drastic lack of speed on this team especially on defense.

On Beaudry he is what he is. He is not the guy who is going to pick a team up and carry them on his shulders for very. He is too inconsistent. Truthfully he is Tyler Sims packaged slightly different. Pooley was right you need a goalie who is capable of carrying a team in essence what he had in Schaefer and Goepfert (though we didn't get to see the fully developed version). Leaman knows it too the guy hehad last year (Kincaid was that type of goalie) that should give us some hope as initially LaPlante was to be his replacment. Now he will be Beaudry's replacement. Also the kid he has for 13-14, Nick Ellis, had a strong year at KUA and the hope is he will fine tune his game in the USHL next year.

Beyond that I do think Leaman will find taking he 2nd step tougher. I seriuosly doubt Schaller returns so we will once again be losing a significant portion of our goal scoring. You can hope that the newcomers coming in can give us a bit more. I think the real key will be that Accari can find his legs fairly fast, that in turn and the fact he will have a year's experience hopefully will boost Drew Brown. The other duo you hope stps up are Derek, who will be 21 (the age of many of our freshman and sophomores) as a junior and that a year back on the ice will give Cross a comfort level. Defense will be tougher. We just don't have a true #1 or #2. Parisi may be that guy but he will only be a freshman and Florentino will help but he is a year away..

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Beaudry has not been strong lately but PC has only scored more then 2 goals 4 times since Jan. 1. That is not going to win too many games.

Will we see you at the Tsongas for this, Freds?
