The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

So we are about a month into the season, and I have to say I am impressed so far. Coach Nate has brought in some talent and things look good. Each week it seems the power play looks better. I think the goaltending is strong. Keep it going!

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

I was there this weekend, along with about 4 other people at Schneider. The team is great. Schaller is a scoring machine. Bergland is playng like a maniac. Thefreshmen are strong. Beaudry has been rejuvenated. Hopefully, hockey fans in RI, if any really exist, will take notice of this gem of a team playing before a bunch of empty seats every night.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Curious as to how Union defector Drew Brown is looking so far this season?

He has looked very strong so far. He seems to have a nose for the puck and hustles. His first goal was a beauty and his play has been very consistent.

I hope that more hockey fans figure it out as well. I'm starting to think RI is all talk when it comes to supporting hockey or RI being a hockey state.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

91 I disagree. If you look at a Friday night in RI there is the potential for PC, Brown and the Providence Bruins to all be playing. In addition, the typical hockey fan has kids that play so there is another potential conflict there. Add in the lack of comfort for fans in years past at PC, fans simply opted to spend their money elsewhere. How many people left PC due to the excruciatingly loud music game after game? I called the press box, people wrote the coach, and the AD and no one cared. One person was told that was the way the sound system could not be lowered. I believe that all PA systems come with a volume knob.

That being said, I feel that this year there is attention being paid to the program. I like the banners on the building and the new marque. I like what I see on the ice as well. That is what will bring people back: WINNING!

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Winning puts people in the seats. In RI, in New England, in the USA. It has been proven over and over. Netman called it: give fans a lousy product and a negative experience and they will go away. We all agree that it takes time to rebuild a program on the ice. It will also take time to rebuild off the ice. Winning generates a buzz, winning attracts news coverage (TV, radio, newspaper), winning gets people talking. When the program was in its heyday in the 1980s there was an expectation of making the NCAA's every year and the question was whether the team would get home ice. That's the NCAAs, not Hockey East. That was when there was a buzz, TV and newspaper coverage, radiocasts on radio, not pay per listen webcasts. The buzz is coming back.

Don't worry, if the Friars continue to win they will come... then we will complain about the long wait for concessions and other important amenities.

It is fun to have a buzz again.

Not sure if that last line came out exactly as intended. ;)

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Many left because the hockey stunk but just as many left because of the way Ross Brooks treated them, loud music, dirty glass and even dirtier ladies rooms and an attitude that said tough sh** to any complainer........he wants to be treated like a god and the powers at PC allows it to happen

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

I think many pc students would agree that having a buzz is quite fun.

My experience is that anyone who ever had anything to do with that school enjoys a good buzz.

Any reason for the awful attendance last night other than Junior Ring Weekend? What were the other 3 classes at PC doing that was better than hockey?

I honestly have no idea. It could be the fact that they were playing Alabama-Huntsville, or that students prefer their hockey fix on fridays. (or they were all friared out from the basketball game)...I haven't a clue. I do know they are attempting to increase student attendance at games, but nothing really seems to have worked yet.

I lean towards the first two. I was happy to see UAH play for the last time, but I can see why the students would rather see anyone in Hockey East. Saturday night attendance does tend to suck in comparison.

And who doesn't want to see Farleigh Dickinson get their come upance? Fie, fie upon the Knights!

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

I would have thought that Providence would have more than 51 votes in the latest poll.

I think that have they have been better than several of the teams ranked higher especially when their losses were to quality opponents.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

51 points is OK for now, after a win on Friday and a good showing in Denver the number will go up.....its a long season, we have lots of time.....the back to backs with the Mack will tell a big story too

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

They are raffleing off an Xbox 360 to students on Friday's game...hopefully that gets people to go.

I love what the teams has been able to accomplish thus far and I love the level of intensity that they have displayed. I'm just disappointed that certain programs always seem to get a pass and some of their records are terrible when you look at who they played and or beat/lost to.
Just sayin. :)

Hey 91 after the last ten years I'm happy to get any votes. I think it takes some time for the voters to believe a program has really turned a corner. Don't forget that the last coach got off to a good start as well. And then the funny business began. I am more optimistic this time around. Just sayin....

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

These stories are always sad.....where did he get hit, sounds like the heart area, that has happened a few times in Little League Baseball and there is little that can be done to protect against it
