The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

sounds like somebody finished off the bottle of liquor today they got for Christmas :o

At the beginning of the year the Village Idiot said Burt was going to be AA or PK or something and I pointed out that for the WI, MN, or BC goalie to do that they are going to have to put up some incredible numbers to separate themselves from the rest. The perception is that none of the three have to be all that good for their team to win.
Guess what, one of them has, in fact it could be argued Burt has as well, except that it just happens that Desbiens has put up even better numbers.
Sure, part of Desbiens incredible numbers is due to the people in front of her, but that is always the case with a top team, and a top goalie, and they are always the first to give credit to the people in front of them. But if you ask the people in front of them, they’ll say it’s the goalie.

If the season ended today and any goalie was nominated for AA or PK and their name wasn't Desbiens the award process would have to be fraudulent. But hey, I think we've enjoyed your drunken stupor as much as you did.

but who knows what will happen between now and the end of the season, there is a way to go yet

Good read on the Cap Morgans, haha.

ARD is a good goalie, one of the top 5 in the NCAA. I hope that UW and BC don't meet up until the Finals. I believe that the two will make for a very exciting game and there will be no excuses, just end to end.

Pokechecking is really only used by goalies currently.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

I generally talk about goaltending

Does anyone out there know goaltending?

If you asked MJ or BF or KK from the top 3 over many beers and you were sworn to secrecy, they would let you know who they would prefer in net for the final game - NCAA. If your a reporter or a troll, they would tell you all you want to hear about how much of a team player their current goalie is and how much trust they have in them and they come up with the big saves when needed, but when it really comes down to it (the semi's or championship game) each one of those caches are having a sleepless night before the game because they are praying that their goalie on the top 3 teams doesn't crater.

I believe that UW, UM, and BC all do have concerns about the goaltending position.

I swear to you, for sure UW and UM's coaches lose sleep thinking about their goaltending.

I once had a former NHL goaltender who owns a Stanley Cup ring tell me that every goaltender will experience at least one bad game every season where nothing seems to work no matter what you do and that the best thing to do is to just accept it and move on because otherwise it will only drive you crazy. I guess it's like a one game batting slump.

I suppose that there are exceptions to his "rule" but experience tells me that his take is quite accurate and that his antidote is good advice.

No matter how good a season your goalie has had the question is will their numbers revert to the norm in a/the big game or worse, will she have one of those games that the NHL'er spoke about and about which she can do nothing despite her efforts.

Anyone recall Raty's game vs BC in the NCAA's (I think) 5 or 6 years ago? Did anyone expect her to have a game like that? Disaster struck at the most inopportune time.

So, yeah, I'm sure goaltending performance is never too far from the coaches' minds before a big game.

Most NCAA coaches really don't know goaltending so I can't hold a poster responsible .

Most coaches, period, know nothing about goaltending...(unless they played the position).

The honest ones will openly admit it, up front, so as to dispel any myths.

Thanks to both Pokechecker and Blackbeard.

Goaltending is a tough position, stats aside, most have to question their sanity. One goalie of which I know who currently plays at the Div 1 level told me once that she has a song in her head during warmups and that she will sing/hum this song throughout the game. Next game, different song. Cool but strange.

In the end, after the season, the truth will be told.

That game was the best

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Raty giving up 4 goals in the 1st period, including 24 seconds into the game. Ouch! Next year she had I think the greatest goaltending of her career in the 3rd period against the Badgers in the championship game.

As a fan, goaltending is always the biggest concern for me in the big games. You just never know how they are going to perform. In 2006 I was more concerned at Mariucci about Vetter than I was about anyone else on the Badgers and justifiably so.

Last year I was concerned about Binnington and Mashmeyer and the Gophers pumped in 8 goals against them. Leveille played great and got redemption from the year before for the game against whoever that was in the finals. They wore the dreaded green I remember. You just never know.

Look at the BC/Harvard series last year -- Maschmeyer looked horrendous in the 10-2 loss, and those of you that were at the Frozen Four will remember Burt's softie in the third. It happens to the best of them.

you call yourself a math wizard and you cant count to Two? it was two softies...calling a spade a spade.

Forgot to mention that Stack certainly didn't help Raty's cause...a la Bobby Orr...

(probably advisable for UM fans to avoid this video)

Nice play but that was some pretty bad defense by 27 (Gillanders) and 3 (Downey) before it became Raty's problem.

I see by the box score that the attendance was 583. For a NCAA Quarterfinal? It definitely didn't look like that many on the video.

In her defense Raty was a frosh and just back from the Olympics. She played tired. But you are dead on with your comment. Some nights the puck looks like a beachball and the shooter telegraphs everything. Some nights it is an asprin made of flubber that has been geased and everyone plays like 99.

I grew up when the only thing a goalie did in practice was provide target practice for the team, there was no coaching. My kid got a lot more help and today even high school teams have goalie coaches.

Goalie is 90% inside your head and they see the game very differently than skaters. Tactically I think they would make great head coaches but I don't know of any. I don't think goalie personalities lend themselves to the job.

"Imagine if at your job anytime something went wrong - even if it wasn't your fault - a flashing red light went off behind your desk and 18,000 stood up and jeered you!"

God I miss Stack. Also seriously that game was a party from start to finish. What an awesome time. lol

You folks out west always express SHOCK at such low attendance at these games. You guys do realize that the crowds at LaBahn and Ridder are the exceptions, not the rule, right?

BC just kind of throws a number out there for these attendance figures. Home games are non-ticketed although the NCAA quarters might be ticketed, either way the difference between 300 and 600 isn't as big as it sounds lol

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Yes, Noora may have been tired after playing in the bronze medal game on 2/25/10, a game on 2/26, 3 overtimes on 2/27, 2 overtimes on 3/6, a game on 3/7 and another overtime game on 3/13. I'd just as soon forget about the next game and after 3 overtimes in the NCAA finals, I was tired myself from watching.

Her dad may have gotten tired too, holding up the bronze medal for the Ridder fans to take photos. Really nice gentleman.

Count me in - I see I made a cameo in the clip (behind the net). I was shaking my head too.

Bob Deraney - Providence
Brian Durocher - BU
Dave Flint - Northeastern

That's off the top of my head.
