Re: The Official Thread of the Run-Up to the XXI Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, Canada

You should be. I've always believed that in this country we just don't do as good a job as we could in remembering our heroes. I mean, it's pretty hit or miss. Some of us at DU are fighting the battle to get our two "immortals" remembered--Keith Magnuson and Bill Masterton. If the Hobey had been in existance when they played, they surely would have won. Yet we haven't retired their numbers, put 'em in a ring of fame, put up a bust or oil painting or anything. Some of us believe that's unconsciencable.
IMO, that is one thing that Minnesota has done an excellent job with. Walking through Mariucci, there are murals everywhere, showing the past greats and their accomplishments. There are displays for the Gophers who played in the Olympics, and of course the one retired number, Mayasich. The Sioux do a great job at this too, both programs do a great job of remembering and celebrating their history.

If you really want a forgotten US hockey team, the US 1956 team also won silver at Cortina in Italy, losing only to the Russians, with some of the same cast as the 1960 Gold Medal team (Cleary, Mayasich, etc.)

We have a richer hockey history on the medals platform that many believe.

Yup. And way on the other ends of that scale is DU. We have always seemed to ignore (run away from would be more correct) our heritage. Yes, they've got a statue of Murray Armstrong. But that's not enough. The two "immortals" I mentioned should be joined in the fullness of time by Matt Carle (and who knows, maybe someone off of this year's team) But it's a small number of players, and they require some form of commemoration.

It's not like there's any controversy who the "immortals" are. There isn't a single DU fan anywhere who would argue against Maggie and Masterton. How could they? It's all part of this traditional DU deal that they don't want the games to become "too" much a college experience. To some of us, it's utterly unfathomable.

But there seem to be signs of change. And maybe we'll get around to doing the right thing.

Indeed, but it probably hurts that the majority of our success came before the advent of widespread television coverage or information exchange.

The 1972 team is sort of a testament to our recent struggles in the sport. They're the only US team to medal in the last 50 years (unless we get one in Vancouver) outside the United States.

I'd forgotten them too, more's the pity.

Sounds like a book writing opportunity for the Swam. :)

For sure. And how about an assignment for an NBC segment producer? The Oympic game is completely different now and Lake Placid tends to suck the air out of any consideration of other US teams, but NBC's budget and duty here, it seems to me, is to put some context on the competition.

I had forgotten that Bruce had played on that team.

One of my buddies talks about playing Sunday mornings at Lewis parkin Edina and realizing this one really fast, skilled player is a girl. Name of Jenny Schmidgal (sp?). Now the leading woman scorer in US Olympic history, Jenny Potter.

That would require, like, work and effort and stuff.

Old Pio - just so it's clear, I wasn't making light of the '60 team in the least but rather was making light of Sid being, "the biggest name around". :)

Re: The Official Thread of the Run-Up to the XXI Olympic Winter Games, Vancouver, Canada

It's still a warm memory for me, but largely forgotten by most of us. Sad.

It's a shame, indeed. What's also a shame was that the Miracle was taped delayed down here, while those of us in Canada (and Americans close to the border) watched it live.

Question -- how many guys from the 72 team made it to the NHL? Off the top, I recognized Boucher, Ftorek, Sheehey and Howe.

Of course. I don't think anyone took it that way. :)

I was stuck in rush hour traffic on south Loop 610 in Houston, near the Astrodome, when suddenly horns began honking and drivers were doing fist pumps. I knew instantly what it was.

That evening Jim McCay opened the broadcast by saying "If you don't know what happened, I'm not gonna tell you."

Off the top of my head, I think you got all the guys who played in the NHL, but I'm wondering about Curran.

Curran played in the WHA for the Minnesota Fighting Saints, never in the NHL.

Crap. I just accidently saw partial results from the men's downhill. That sucks. :(

Thanks. To call Mike Curran feisty really doesn't do him justice. He'd just as soon put his stick down your throat as look at you. As I say, he gave one up about a minute into what turned out to be the silver medal game against Czechoslovakia. A lot of us were saying, here we go, because the Czechs had beaten their previous opponant like 9-1. But Curran shut 'em out for 59 minutes and made numerous saves on his lips.

Agreed! I signed out of my hotmail account and the results were posted in large font at the top of MSN.

I saw them too. Right on the main page of MSNBC and on ESPN. Irritates the heck out of me. Especially the nbc page. If you know you are going to show it on tape delay why put the results up!?!?!?!?! Why not just say "click here for downhill results"? Morons
