I watched Kearney during some final trials at Whiteface Mtn. a couple weekends ago, and I knew she was going to at least medal this time. The gold is even better though.

Maybe this is just me, but I miss the days when they would play the entire national anthems of the winning country without cutting away or doing stupid medal ceremonies well after the event. Thanks salt lake city, you ****ing suck.

I'm not 80 years old or anything, but as long as I remember, the Winter Olympics have always had all the medal ceremonies together in some downtown plaza or square at the end of each day. I guess I don't understand why NBC didn't show us the women's moguls ceremony since the US won....

Edit: They obviously never do hockey like that....

Hmm... I suppose that could be. I could have sworn i remember watching them do it at the event like speed skating event and the such. I also thought I remember seeing flag poles at the ends of the ski runs but I could definitely be mistaken on that. I thought I remember hearing that the salt lake olympics were the first to do something like that.

Hey maybe you're right, I might not know what I'm talking about and things blend together when you see a bunch of them. I kind of like the idea though. Since it's just a smaller event than the Summer games, I think it's a good way to bring everyone together and party, especially when events tend to be more spread out with a couple different places a few hours away for skiing. Regardless, I just don't understand why NBC wouldn't show us Kearney's ceremony.

Someone should be getting yelled at for that epic fail.

Good points though on the rest of the post. I do like the party atmosphere, but I guess I'm of the school of thought where if I was one of the athletes, I would love to get that gold medal right then and there. However, the more I think about it the more I like the party atmosphere too.

No, you're right. Remember when Dan Janson got his gold, it was in the "Viking Ship" at Hamar. I was at an awards ceremony in Sapporo, Japan where the Japanese swept the podium. There were 100K people there, and no party, later in the day, could possibly approach that, ever.

I believe this business of having medals ceremonies at one location is a very recent development. Actually, I loved it in Torino with the Italian crowds singing along with their anthem.

just watched the luge death video....

one would think logically there would not be steal beams along the track that are unpadded. eventhough at 90mph slamming backfirst into a padded steal beam would probably still kill you...but should have been a bigger wall...one would think

I can't find the answer to this question but while looking, I found out why NBC didn't show any other ceremonies. Amman got his medal at the ski jumping site; the nightly medal presentations begin tomorrow night, featuring the events from today, and it happens inside at BC Place. That seems a little lame. If you aren't going to do it at the events, I think it should be done outside on the streets somewhere so that people can gather without paying $22 (which is the cost of admission).

Really?

That IS an Epic Fail. Screw NBC.

I reiterate my statement that with certain events I could fly right now to Vancouver (or Seattle and drive to Vancouver), attend an event, fly back, eat, and still be waiting for it to come on TV here in the West. It's ridiculous.

Amazingly there is now a wall up to prevent the lugers from flying up and launching into the steel beams.

I was at Salt Lake in 2002. Trust me, having the Medal ceremonies in a plaza or some other non-event public place is a lot more fun. It allows the entire city to enjoy and participate in the games as well, even if you don't have a ticket.

I am shocked at the Canadian dude shooting like that... Definately "in the zone" for him right now... Easily 5-10 seconds quicker than some of the other guys and 5/5...

Since you would probably be the only person on the boards who would know, any idea what kind of caliber they are shooting? I'm assuming a .22....

Also, Bjorn Dhale with 3 misses... He's D.O.A.

From what I was reading online somewhere .22 has been the standard for some time.

I don't know what they're shooting, its definitely small. I would ask hockeyplayer1015, he shoots on his school's team and I think he follows the biathalon some.
