Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I guess the only other traveling trophies I can find are the Indy 500 (Borg-Warner Trophy), McNaughton Cup, beanpot and the traveling trophies in college football rivarlies. Kinda disappointing that there aren't more.
Just thought of another that is a pretty big deal, the Claret Jug, which goes to the Champion Golfer of the Year.

Grey Cup...apparently from like 1934 until 1970, the NFL did have a traveling trophy...which the Minnesota Vikings lost :P

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I can't find any reference to this...

It was the Thorp trophy. We won it in 1969, then lost in the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. The next year the leagues merged making the Lombardi the only one rewarded by the league. The Vikings claim to not have the Ed Thorp trophy, and have no idea where it is. Some people think this is why the Vikings are cursed.

Is it just me, or is the NFL doing "good things" only because they have been pressured to by the public, to the 400~ that got screwed out of tickets?

1. Here's 3x face value. We know you paid more, and there's the whole airfare/hotel thing, but that's your business.
2. Well, okay, here's 4x face value, and tickets to the next SB. We know your team may not be there, but hey, it's the SB!
3. F*. Fine. Here's the money, and you can go to whatever SB you want. And you don't have to decide until the last minute. Jesus, you guys are greedy.

I would definitely take that route.

What is the limitation? 5 years? 10 years? Lifetime?

A smart person would go to his/her team's SB. If that doesn't happen, and it's the last year to decide, take the tix, sell them for major profit, and still take the trip to the city and vacation a little (given that most of the time it's in a warm-weather city). :D

It's at the bottom of Lake Minnetonka - somebody threw it overboard during the sex cruise.

The organization isn't cursed; it's simply run by idiots.

My favorite historic, prestigious, travelling trophy:

No precedent left them grabbing for straws...decision was probably made by 5 people and reviewed by 5 before being offered. The offer was reviewed by 10 million people, half of whom are lawyers. I am going to say they weren't trying to screw anybody or lowball anybody, they just didn't think it through. They have billions, their brand is worth billions and this is their flagship event...nobody with some experience and a brain would have come up with such a lame initial offer. They couldn't save enough money to make up for the black eye...they should have immediately called a PR firm that specializes in disasters/emergencies and been walked through a decision matrix that would have resulted in a much better response.

I don't know, if they go back to the old unis, that's pretty great.

I got the text from shrader (anyone remember him? ;)) yesterday. I was pumped. I hate these current unis. Bring back the "glory days" even though they didn't bring us a title. I loved those uniforms.
