The NFL Thread (cont'd)

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I would think the Lombardi Trophy is the most prestigious trophy in sports as far as trophies they make a new one of every year. Stanley Cup is by far the prestigious traveling trophy. The Lombardi Trophy represents greatness in the most popular sport in America, thats hard to top...even by a Olympic gold.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

How awesome can the MacNaughton be if it's not even given for winning an actual championship?

So does that stupid crystal football, and that is determined by a 2 team playoff. ;)

But I know what you mean.

Which other trophies aren't traveling? The world series, gold medals and whatever the bla...I mean NBA gives out? Then I'd say I'd pick Lombardi over those. I think the gold medal is different somehow, equally important, but not on the same level to be compared to the others.

I guess the only other traveling trophies I can find are the Indy 500 (Borg-Warner Trophy), McNaughton Cup, beanpot and the traveling trophies in college football rivarlies. Kinda disappointing that there aren't more.

Coke ones aren't supposed to be funny or all that innovative. They have their shtick, and do it very well. The fantasy/world of warcraft/lord of the rings one wasn't the polar bears or anything, but it was the exact same sentiment.

Top 5 ads in my household:
VW Darth Vader kid
Doritos reincarnated grandpa
Pepsi Max black dude on diet
*House's spoof of the Mean Joe Greene ad
NFL's TV character ad
* if that doesn't count since it was a Fox promo, then the truck one that spoofed Lassie would probably be next. Though is it bad I can't remember which brand that was?

Worst ones:
Generic summer movie trailers
E-Trade baby (die already)
Living Social (so your targetted audience is transvestites?) / Groupon (way to mock Tibet, *****holes)
creepy Doritos dude
godaddy.com (Joan Rivers? Really?)

I generally agree with this listing. I detest that E-Trade kid to no end, and could Joan Rivers just DIAF, finally? Thought the House/Greene spot was a riot, and appropriate.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I'm 26 and I knew what was going on from the beginning, it wasn't that far out there.

Anyone under 45 will get it if you have some pop culture knowledge.

Agreed with everything that was posted about the ads.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

The WCHA Champion (with no qualifier) is the Regular Season champion, the playoff champion is merely the playoff champion. UMD just put up its new banners at Amsoil arena, and there are individual banners for its 3 WCHA titles and a singular banner listing its 3 WCHA playoff titles. North Dakota doesn't even hang banners for WCHA playoff titles, only regular season.

I would argue that the UEFA Champions League trophy is more prestigious than the Stanley Cup, and I like hockey more.

Football content...wait til next year.

Eh...it's better than the generic "ball on stand" that the NBA, NFL, and FIFA World Cup uses, but it still seems pretty generic - if placed among a dozen golf/tennis trophies, not sure I'd be able to recognize it. The Stanley Cup is instantly recognizable; even my Dad, who hates hockey, knows the trophy.

I really like soccer and I don't think that it's even close. The Stanley Cup is way more prestigious in my view.

The Stanley Cup is way cooler, no doubt, but that doesn't have that much to do with prestige. Olympic medals look like, as a whole, a lot like other medals given for winning stuff, but that doen't mean they're not way more prestigious than the definately unique X-Games medals.

The Doritos reanimated Grandpa is definately not getting enough attention, loved it.
The Groupon ad was in poor taste.

@WeWantMore: In North America its the Stanley Cup by far, in the rest of the world I'd say the Champions' League by far.

I was thinking prestigious on I guess a "how tough a road is it to get". Now Im not saying the NFL season and playoffs arent tough but I think the road to the Stanley Cup is just way tougher. As for Oylmpic Gold and the World Cup. Well they dont give those out every year and you are competeting against the entire world to get it...some of the few things that are actually WORLD championships. It is kind of interesting though...I seem to hear the MLB, NFL and NBA champions refer to themselves as world champions quite a bit...but I usually hear NHL champs refer to themselves as Stanley Cup champs.

EDIT: I guess how I rate them is really this...if I meet someone and they say " I won trophy X"...which would I be more impressed by? As is clearly evident by this thread...that will differ from person to person. And also to be honest...when it comes to Olympic gold it also depends on the event. Im more impressed by say winning a speed skating, or 200 m hurdles than say equestrian. Again...different opinions.

Well yeah, definitely. But taking regional biases out, I still think the Stanley Cup is more prestigious. It's been around for longer, and it's arguably harder to win with salary cap considerations taken into account.

Although I think to some degree I think it's an apples to oranges type comparison. There are some scenarios where a Champions League trophy could be the 4th trophy a team competes for in a single season, while the Stanley Cup is pretty much it for NHL teams. (With a nod to the President's trophy, but that's not really the same thing).

On the commercial front, how did Eminem become popular again? On a related note, what in the world was Chrysler doing spending $9m on that commercial?

In my mind, a lot of it has to do with what they say they actually won. As you said, NHL teams say they won the Stanley Cup first and foremost. NFL teams say they won the Super Bowl - the Lombardi Trophy is a mere symbol of the title as opposed to the goal itself. Same holds true for most other leagues worldwide.

Which is why it always makes me a little angry that the winners of the World Cup, don't actually get a Cup but a truly unremarkable trophy.

I also think Olympic gold gets disqualified because the medals change with each Olympiad. The status of Olympic gold is unparalleled, but the medals themselves cannot be iconic since they are constantly changing.
