The NFL Thread (cont'd)

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I was at a local sports bar for the UND/MN series, the same night the Pack was taking on ATL. That phrase (Go Pack Go) literally made me want to punch someone, anyone. I didn't care if it was Mother Theresa, Ghandi, or Jesus Christ Himself (although we all know he hates Wisconsin ;) ). Every first down, it was chanted. Every catch, it was chanted. Good Parise it was annoying. I'd rather listen to Kelly Pickler ramble on about world politics than hear that one more time.
come on, it wasn't the phrase, it was the whiney chick voices that kept leading the way on it...even I wanted to slap someone

Atl, Jets, Giants, Eagles are good value bets. Houston/KC good long shot bets (and I do mean long shot).

The whiney soccer mom chick definitely made it a sure lock. But the overuse of the phrase was the main part.

I like Eagles Colts, although it seems like the Jets could finally get over that hump...

I think the Colts are starting to hang on to their legacy, rather than improving. I see a decent run at best, only to fall short yet again.

Remember, they were only ones that had more injuries than the packers...be interesting to see if they have a repeat or are healthier.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

Well that was a very entertaining game. With the obvious exception of the half time show, which was crime against humanity. I hope that performance ruins whatever career those no-talent hacks had any hope of having. Are there no good bands/singers willing to play at halftime, so they have to get some drunk karaoke singers out there?

Anyway, other than that I really enjoyed the rest. I thought the commercials were improved over last year, the Pepsi Max commercials and Doritos commercials were excellent. Congrats to the Pack, I thought they were going to **** it away but they held strong at the end. It was interesting that I was at a party with about 20 Vikings fans and all but about 4 were actively cheering for the Pack and the rest were pretty much neutral.

There were a minimum of cutesy ads, thankfully. (The Darth Vader ad had no right to be anything but maudlin, but somehow it was great.) The Go Daddy ads are more boring and predictable than beer ads, which is saying a lot. Joan Rivers was the only interesting "twist." The Doritos ads all sucked (except Grandpa, which was good). The Eminem Detroit ad was both beautiful and horrible at the same time. The NFL ad was very good, we spent 5 minutes tracking all the connections between characters and teams (thanks for giving us Ralph Wiggam, Matt...), the beetle ad was good concept, poor execution. The Glee reprise of the 50's "See the USA in Your Chevrolet" was by far the best ad of all with perfect pitch production values right off a Mad Men set, but 80% of the audience probably missed it.

Vick's a great story, I just don't see him leading the Eagles to anything. I would expect Atlanta to take a step back with their first place schedule. In the NFC, the Packers will no doubt be the favorite. I would expect the Saints to be there as well. My guess is the NFC Super Bowl rep is one of those two teams.

Yes, the Jets are no doubt a factor in the AFC as are the Patriots. I'll say the AFC SB rep is one of them.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

Two opponents is all the difference that makes - so at worst with all else equal, they go 12-4 instead of 14-2.

Well Atlanta gets the NFC North, Eagles and Seahawks next year for sure...no idea what their AFC division is.

Yeah, but they'd get the same AFC division and NFC North next year even if they'd finished 4th. The only differences the 1st place schedule makes are the games against the Eagles and Seahawks.

True, but is it really that surprising the NFC South was so strong this year when they were the NFC division that was matched up with the NFC West? Trading West for the North makes their schedule tougher...

Ya, I probably should have elaborated...

Well, first off, car commercials are almost never funny, and Coke commercials are never funny. Commercials for summer action movies: not funny, and there were a lot of those too. (Except for laughing at Nic Cage doing a southern accent.) So that's a bunch out the window right there.

There were a couple that were worthwhile though. The Darth Vader VW one was funny, though my friends and I had all seen it before. The Doritos one where the guy licks the crumbs off the other guy's fingers probably got the biggest laughs of the night at the party I was at. The one where all the TV characters are getting ready to watch football was the only one we rewound to watch again. Other than that, there was a LOT of "meh". GoDaddy is no longer interesting. Bud's commercials all sucked. There was one Pepsi commercial where a guy got hit in the groin with a soda can, which is universally amusing.

Coke ones aren't supposed to be funny or all that innovative. They have their shtick, and do it very well. The fantasy/world of warcraft/lord of the rings one wasn't the polar bears or anything, but it was the exact same sentiment.

Top 5 ads in my household:
VW Darth Vader kid
Doritos reincarnated grandpa
Pepsi Max black dude on diet
*House's spoof of the Mean Joe Greene ad
NFL's TV character ad
* if that doesn't count since it was a Fox promo, then the truck one that spoofed Lassie would probably be next. Though is it bad I can't remember which brand that was?

Worst ones:
Generic summer movie trailers
E-Trade baby (die already)
Living Social (so your targetted audience is transvestites?) / Groupon (way to mock Tibet, *****holes)
creepy Doritos dude
godaddy.com (Joan Rivers? Really?)
