Wisconsin had it's own set of issues this year, the NMU losses are a symptom not the problem. Only scoring ~2 goals per game is the problem.
The advantage of conference games is that the "win" stays in the conference, when you lose a NC game, it drags down the RPI of everyone in your conference. More NC games are only good for a conference if they can be relatively sure of winning at least half the time.
Non-Conference scheduling is also a crap shoot. Agreements have to be drawn up years in advance. Nothing says that a big player team you create an agreement today with will be as strong as you want when you play them in a year or two. Obviously, winning helps your PWR whoever you are, but quality losses help too.
You don't think Wisconsin is a little p*ssed with how mediocre NMU is this season? Kinda like a few years back when Wisco beat us and dragged our PWR down with their mild season.
