The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Try living by this motto:

"Better to beg for forgiveness than to ask permission."

It's a matter of access. There's not a lot of open area. We might could do it in the parking deck, but we'd have to do it on the roof, and people just aren't going to see it up there. The city has control of everything around there.

Bumping. No news to discuss though. Bruce McLeod will be the intermission guest for the Wildcat hockey game. Hope to hear a bunch of announcements.

I wonder, since we are playing 28 league games and HE, /others are playing quite a bit fewer, how will this affect us? Is it a good thing to play this many league games and why would HE go to fewer games when they are adding teams?

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Random thought.

In the CCHA teams have always lined up to shake hands after every game, while the WCHA custom has always been to only do it at the end of a series. Any ideas on which tradition will prevail?

I know whenever a WCHA team visited BG, there was always an awkward moment at the end of Friday's game as the home team lined up while the visitors skated to the gate.

It's a slow night, and I have nothing more important to think about.

I see no reason to shake until the series is over.

Especially if a playoff series goes 3 games. Based on that, only after final game in regular season also.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

The "old" WCHA and CCHA teams whimpered and cried how tough the "long" trip to Alaska was/is. Expect the same crybaby simperings from the "new" WCHA.
The Alaska teams make the "long" trip eight (for you Norwegians that's between 7 and 9) times every year.
And you don't hear complaints from them. Look at the map, Alabama is a far piece of travel either way to/from Alaska.

I think HE teams have much more flexibility in their scheduling based on the number of D-I teams within a given radius of their program. Western schools don't have that advantage. Because of that, HE programs can cut back on conference games and still have no problem filling their schedule with plenty of local games. The WCHA on the other hand doesn't have many local teams that are looking to play them so non-conference games are more likely to mean longer travel out of the Midwest to the East Coast or *gag* Colorado.

Well, it's UAAFanblog with a new name. I'll be ****ed. And he still doesn't understand that if the Alaska schools don't travel to the lower 48, they have no schedule. In other words, THEY HAVE NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. It would be rather foolish for them to complain. The lower 48 schools, on the other hand, can put together a schedule quite nicely, than you very much.

This is America, **** it; even if you can see Russia from your house. I've got a right to complain. Deal with it.

Sounds like complaining to me. You and Donald: whine and cheese.

As far as Hockey East having more non-con games, it is just a matter of numbers. With a ten-team league, 27 games (3 against each opponent) is a pretty natural number. Going to eleven and then twelve teams changes that math. 2 games against each opponent again provides a pretty natural number. 20 games next year, then 22 after that. It's 5 more non-con games, but avoids some weird, unbalanced, rotating schedule.

Scheduling Ease. Remember that the WCHA schools will get the AK exemption of 2 or 4 games every year, that means that a 28 game WCHA schedule is similar to a 26 or 24 game schedule for other conferences and will still allow them 8 to 10 NC games per season. At least with conference games you are assured of having 1/2 of them at home, where as with NC games you could end up with all of them on the road (or worse yet not able to schedule them).

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Yep, conference gaames are guaranteed home dates for your team. With the B1G schools demanding 2-for-1 or 3-for-1's, that's non-conf dates that you lose home dates from.

If it turns out that more of the "like minded schools" demand 2-for-1's, I wonder if the NCAA will add back in the road win bonus (only for non- cconf games) to the PWR?

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong; but I was under the impression that the Alaska/Hawaii Exemption could only apply to ONE trip per season.

Maybe you should just be thrilled that you both have a League to play in. What do you think the chances would be that your basketball conference would accept Ferris State or Bemidji (not that they would apply)? Zero! Why? Travel and the fact there there are far more reasonable options. Why not form the Great West College Hockey Conference. Start with Anchorage and Fairbanks and wait for other schools to apply. The bottom line, you need the WCHA far more than it or any of its members need you.

20 games, then 22, unless intra-squad scrimmages now count in the standings.

Yep. Ask us what a conference means. We played two D-I home games thanks to the scrapping of our schedule the year before; we didn't have more than eight in the schedule that existed. Next year we'll have 14 + 2 by one NCHC team who promised their Huntsville-home kid a chance to play in front of his home fans his senior season. [Maybe two more.]

ok, if you all say so,.... being the total skeptic that I am, I figured that it was all about money. Or maybe some teams thinking they could get an advantage by playing more non con games and thus enhance their bid chances..... Silly me.I should have been more trusting I guess.

Non-Conference scheduling is also a crap shoot. Agreements have to be drawn up years in advance. Nothing says that a big player team you create an agreement today with will be as strong as you want when you play them in a year or two. Obviously, winning helps your PWR whoever you are, but quality losses help too.

You don't think Wisconsin is a little p*ssed with how mediocre NMU is this season? Kinda like a few years back when Wisco beat us and dragged our PWR down with their mild season.
