The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Th source of this rumor came from an article in the BG paper that stated unidentified sources that were unhappy with their deal. It's not a solid source I readily admit, that's why I'm looking to confirm it. But when you ad the article, to a certain coaches comments, to nothing happening, and to a pointed no comment when this question was asked, then something is going on.

As far as BG, you know it's not that important, but it is a d1 school and while within hockey it's not much, outside of hockey it's name is recognized a lot more than anyone else's. Does that matter? maybe.

Also, if the league wanted to find a way to fly to games, especially on the across the lake trips like Bemidji to Ferris, it would really cut the time involved and it could be done for only about 20% more than the bus.

although that number may actually go down in the nWCHA.

Eh, once you factor in the extra bus time to places like Bemidji and Houghton, it's probably negligible. I suppose you'll be making one less flight by playing UAA in-conference.

Actually both teams fly back and forth. But that cost is mitigated through sponsorships.

Exactly. A great example of a way to help the league mitigate travel costs. If only there were people in the league office smart enough to think of sponsorships, other than the kind that gets free frozen pizza.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Same will hold true for UAH - if the league members don't want to increase their travel, they should not admit UAH. Once they do, UAH has every right to point out - if confronted with complaints by other teams - that their travel is um-teen times worse.

The argument that I keep hearing our guys making is this: it's cheaper to do an Alaska trip and a Huntsville trip than it is to do two Alaska trips.

Only if Hunstville provides the same subsidies as the Alaskas will. I sure hope they can find a way to get it done. I know there is some support.

Alaska Airlines has been kind to UAF, and I presume UAA too (although I think the Seawolves are on Delta for most of their hockey trips). Group rates, baggage and change fee waivers, etc. I wonder if they'd be open to some kind of an expanded partnership with the league.

The same? It's not as expensive to fly here as it is to fly there. Do we need to subsidize travel? Maybe. Is it something that we'll consider (I'm guessing that it's been broached)? Sure. But I don't see where UAH would need to offer dollar-for-dollar what the Alaska schools do. Also, how is that working with the Alaska schools? I've always been under the impression that Fairbanks paid out more than Anchorage did.

We do. We pay for 25 tickets, plus hotel and ground transport. The Westmark donates some hotel rooms in-kind so that helps.

I believe Anchorage only pays for 12 tickets, and no hotel or ground transport.

Did this have anything to do with the WCHA Final Five check, versus the CCHA Final Four check (rumored to be a difference of about $100,000)?

My big question is how that will be reconciled with the nWCHA housing both teams. As FTB&G notes, the postseason payout likely offset some of that travel cost, and I doubt that we'll see those kinds of numbers in the nWCHA, Huntsville or no Huntsville.

GFM <-- but please, Huntsville.

I should have said same type of subsidy. Cetainly not dollar for dollar.

I searched and searched but the archives only start at 2010 and before and this was in 2012. The search function in the paper's web site leaves a lot to be desired. sorry.

I don't know how the travel subsidies will be handled. My guess is they are up for negotiation, and I wouldn't be surprised if UAA winds up paying more than they have been. We shall see.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

No idea. But it's no secret the old WCHA was far better off financially than the CCHA, thanks in large part to the Final Five.

Not sure that will be the case with the nacho league of the other or the big 10(2) going forward

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Bruce McLeod spent a few moments on air tonight during the NMU vs Michigan series. Said that they were excited to maintain their partnership for the Championship in St. Paul for every other year, but it was too early yet to announce where the other Championship location will be. Said it would be beneficial to NMU fans (Milwaukee? Duluth? Grand Rapids?)

Sounded really excited about the prospects for the league, and said that so far it was solid footing.
- Of note, he was unprompted to mention financials, it seemed like it sorta slipped out that the New WCHA was financially stable.

One thing that did frustrate me is that he will keep the league headquarters "In Denver for as long as I'm at the helm, after that, all bets are off." Would have liked to be located closer to the teams, not a phone call and flight away from everything.

When McLeod was in the Soo last weekend, the LSSU radio announcer was saying the other city would be Grand Rapids. I assume that was based upon things he heard McLeod say.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I heard him speak recently and he said he is retiring in 2 years after that I'm sure the HQ will come closer. I am thinking that Grand Rapids will be the other championship site.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I'm excited about Grand Rapids being the location. Van Andel is a great facility, and I enjoy making the trip over for Griffins games when they host the Chicago Wolves. It's easily accessible for BGSU, FSU, LSSU, and even NMU.
