The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Yes, I am well aware of all that. I asked a question about in-state. I suppose you did answer, in a roundabout way... your short bus ride is more important than any sense of intra-Michigan competition. Okay, I get that. A tourney isn't the same as a real rivalry and regular season scheduling. But whatever, at this point you're not even reading whatI am writing.

Here's what I have to say about your longer bus rides - too **** bad.
Itra-Michigan happens, MTU plays NMU every year and has been playing LSSU the last few years. The downstate teams have no interest in coming up to Houghton...its not about MTU or I thinking our short bus ride is more important...its about WMU, MSU, Michigan not wanting to take the long bus ride. I like how you make it sound like WMU is this amazing program. It's more interesting to you because they made the tournament last year? How is MTU not interesting to you? They beat Denver in Denver last year. Miami and WMU are interesting right now but what happens when you get bored of them? If either falls to the bottom, they will be the new MTU/MSUM/UAA/BSU. Someone will become the punching bag. Are WMU & Miami worth never winning the McNaughton Cup again? Are WMU & Miami worth throwing away the name recognition of the WCHA?

This is just details. I still stand by forming a new conference as a good thing for us...

Now which teams, exactly, would I have chosen? That's tougher. And that's an entirely different discussion. Western Michigan probably wouldn't have been one of them, for me. I think that has a lot to do with Miami and the prospect of Notre Dame, and possibly have a little 3-team pod down there. And also, getting a few CCHA schools is important to support the view of this as a national cream-of-the-crop conference. But that's semantics - I didn't write the press release. It's still exciting for us. But I understand the bitterness, I do.

It will be a shame to lose this:

Better question, what happens to the Broadmoor Trophy? Not that we ever win it, but its namesake is here in Colorado, it'd be funny to have it roaming around the WCHA.

The name recognition of the WCHA... I think it's replaceable. Now, at least. It's been watered over the last 20 years or so. I won't name names, but expansion didn't help the brand. May have helped the sport, but it hurt the conference. The NCHC is not just about what's being added - WMU/Miami... it's about what's being dropped, too.

You said that while SCSU wasn't your first "next" choice, they're not a horrible choice. They would have been if they hadn't been added ot the WCHA. UNO was just added this past season... and they're good enough for your NCHC now. Pre-Blais, that would have been a joke, but now they're good enough to be in an elite league. So maybe expansion over the last 20 years wasn't so bad.

And seriously, that last line... its about what's being dropped? Based on what you're doing in these posts, don't be surprised if any fans of the WCHA teams being left behind urinate on you if they ever figure out who you are... just to return the favor.

SCSU is the best of the teams left in Minnesota. And it's Minnesota, so it's hard to argue with the choice if you want another school.

UNO is all about Dean Blais, we all know that. But it's a pretty big market too (let's not ignore their CCHA time before their WCHA time). I'm sort of afraid of Husker hockey someday, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

What's wrong with being honest about who we do and do not want to play? Hardly worthy of urination. Isn't that what conferences are about... call it "like-mindedness," or whatever other marketing phrase you'd like to use. I call it interest/interesting.

I don't think Mankato and Bemidji have any more interest in the Colorado schools than we have in them. Nor Anchorage, nor Tech really, although there's more history there. Each and every one of these decisions make sense in their own way. I'm glad we voted how we did - one school, one vote. And we don't owe anybody anything, this is business, not family.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

I wouldn't have said this 10 days ago but it's looking more and more probable that ND will wind up in the BT after all--and not just for hockey. The impending demolition of the Big East would seem to pretty much guarantee it. While the move toward four megaconferences (orchestrated by ESPN) may turn out to be a long-term disaster, it is a short-term inevitability and ND going to end up with a choice of going along (to the BT) or getting left behind. Much as ND values its football independence, none of the megaconferences are going to let ND keep its football cash cow all to itself.

Things could change again but for once, it doesn't look like ND is holding the trump card.

I highly doubt the Big East will collapse despite the departure of Pitt and 'Cruse. The Pac-12 have announced they are not presently entertaining plans for expansion which essentially saves the Big 12, and a conference realignment meltdown for now. Big East commish, John Marinatto met with remaining BE teams a couples days ago and a verbal commitment of corporate solidarity and loyalty to the BE was unanimously agreed upon, which essentially stops the bleeding for the moment. As the article points out, Pitt and 'Cruse are under contract to remain in the BE until 2014, which also gives time for Marinatto to find replacements and rebuild the BE.

All this means that we may be entering a phase of aftershocks in which grandiose scenarios of realignment tsunamis in college football are going to decline. What that means for ND is stability as an independent for now. Notre Dame's unique identity, proven national market and prodigious football revenue translates into remaining independent. What that means for the ND hockey is anybodies guess, but I don't think the B1G is one of them. It's either NCHC or independent.

Omaha is a nice market, and a growing hockey hotbed, but pre-Blais they were nobodys, and they could become again post-Blais.

And all I'm saying is you're urinating on those fans, so that's fine, just expect it ten fold. And I'd expect a lot coming from MTU fans... not only will it be 80% beer, those ******** probably know what to drink to make it smell and stain.

One of our fondest memories is Denver's "Mankato meltdown" in 2003, when Mankato scored 7 unanswered goals against the Pioneers to erase a 7-1 deficit and win 8-7. So yes, there is some history for us that's going away.

This is what I was thinking too. This guy is a real class act. He wonders why so many have a problem with him, well maybe because he's a pretentious *** that ****es on other teams every chance he gets.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

What is going to happen to UNO Hockey when Blais leaves for the Minnesota Job opening next year?

They become cannon fodder too. All those "elite" teams need someone to beat up so their record looks good.

pretentious [prɪˈtɛnʃəs]
adj
1. making claim to distinction or importance, esp undeservedly.

I have been very clear that I support the move because I find the competition to be more interesting and a better fit. I have been very careful, for the most part, to avoid the "elitist" arguments for the NCHC. Different, better fit for us, but not necessarily better quality. I have no interest in playing those schools, and am happy to get out of the same conference as them. And I do think the NCHC will end up being a better conference (but probably still not as good as the Big 10, which will have the leg up on everybody for recruiting). But that is not what I've been saying. I have been saying that this was a business decision, and MTU's fate is not my concern. That's blunt and honest - but it's not pretentious.

What is going to happen to UNO Hockey when Blais leaves for the Minnesota Job opening next year?

If UNO is smart about his replacement, then probably the same thing that happened when Don Lucia - the first CC coach to have a winning season in ages - left CC for the Minnesota job.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Last thing, before I get back to work... two nice little 9-team leagues, if everything pans out as seems likely. If we can get past the bitterness and spilt milk, this looks pretty interesting. Would be fun to actually discuss the on-ice future (the "going down the tubes" part of this thread title) of these leagues:

Your Michigan Tech is vintage 2005.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Who is who here? BHHC doesn't tell me who your team is, just tells me that you're a complainer.

co14ers is supposedly a DU fan that grew up in Colorado Springs. He is just as confused as you are. Me – I’m just a townie that supports the Tigers… :)
