The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

The highest sought after recruits more commonly choose the historically top programs in college hockey - Boston College, Boston U, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Denver, *Notre Dame (*since Jeff Jackson), and Minnesota.

Occasionally a Miami, a Northeastern, or a Cornell gain a recruiting year edge. Unfortunately, for the rest it usually is a single highly sought after successful recruit if any for all the other Div 1 teams.

The hope for the future is that other high caliber players choose to stay close to home and family and favor their favorite team growing up instead of the lure of the NCHC in order to keep the competitive balance.

Despite that, I still see the future recruiting battle ground as follows which obviously speaks volumes to why all this happened in the first place.

1 Big Ten / Hockey East
3 NCHC
4 WCHA
5 ECAC / Atlantic

Then, the recruiting battleground will establish a new standard with the winning programs that result from these new affiliations.
Also all the new under .500 teams will struggle to keep up with the recruiting battle.

So how soon do we start to see recruiting violations being reported? Seeing how many programs copying the conference shuffling they've seen from the big boys on campus (football/basketball) would anyone find it surprising if this behaviour also follows? What once made College DI Hockey environment unique from it's counterparts - that the small schools could compete with the big schools - is sadly gone away. Some of that same arrogance and eliticism snaking it's way in.

As a USCHO writer (I think) stated very well; College Hockey fans have wanted their sport to be more like College Football. Now it has.

Very well stated. You have this nailed down.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

What's fascinating is how with one breath they tell those of us left behind on The Island of Misfit Toys about how this change is really good for us, and in the next breath talk about the big recruiting advantage they will now have.
7 teams that finish ahead of you in the standings are leaving. Gives you a better chance to make the tourney and that's good for you. Right?

Wrong.

1. The WCHA used to get 4,5 tourney bids. Now the combined WCHA/CCHA leftovers will get one. Certainly no improvement as far as the chance of making the tourney.
2. We used to get some recruits because we were in the prestigious WCHA. When it is The Island of Misfit Toys, we won't. It's that simple.

There were 4 to 5 bids to the NC$$ Tourney, but I think that you would have a better chance now to make the FF5 and then get the auto-bid with all those teams gone.

You keep avoiding the recruiting part, which was the subject of the original post that began this exchange.

Where are they going to go instead?
Follow the whole discussion. The NCHC folks were discussing how the new, higher-profile league is going to get them better recruits. Recruiting is a "zero-sum game." If they get better recruits, the leftovers will get worse recruits. So don't talk about your improved recruiting environment while telling the leftovers that this is really to their advantage. It can't be both.

A recruit who might have considered Mankato in the past because of the prestige of the WCHA no longer will when the WCHA becomes the NSIC/GLIAC hockey conference.

Also, I've already talked to several season-ticket holders who say that when the WCHA becomes a de-facto D-II conference, they will no longer be interested.

My whole point is, those whose schools acted in their own interest (and I understand that) should just stop telling the leftovers that this is good for us while simultaneously celebrating the new-found advantages they are expecting. It can't be both ways.

How many really big time recruits was Mankato getting before?
Not a lot of 1st-3rd round picks were heading to a lot of these schools to begin with.
I also do not think the bottom teams in the NCHC will be seeing a lot of big time kids going there if they aren't winning.

No argument, but that's not to say it can't get worse. We can go from getting a few lower-round draftees to not even getting considered by them.

And the big difference between a low round pick and a non draftee is what?
A lot of low rounders are not even signed by the team that drafted them.
Roe didn't get signed by LA after a 170 point career.
Recruiting for many of these teams won't change much, winning may change it though.

Internet discussions are like trying to pick up jello with your hands.

The fact remains that if the B1G and particularly the NCHC (as was claimed inthis thread) get a larger share of the best recruits, that leaves fewer for the misfit toys. "It's simple math." ©Scooby.

The fact also remains that for the most part, the NCHC and B1G got them anyway.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Perhaps "college hockey has become like college football," but this does not imply a fixed pecking order. College football dynasties stumble while others rise, and college hockey is likely to follow this pattern. The outlook for financial integrity in college hockey is not so rosy. Not only do colleges compete with one another and with major professional teams for recruits, as in football and basketball, but college hockey must also compete with minor league professional hockey. The economic realities of supporting a hockey program are much different than supporting programs such as baseball or lacrosse. These conditions invite abuse of economic and academic restrictions designed to protect amateur college hockey.

I believe you forgot one.
