The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Over the weekend from a very solid source 4 of Superleague teams are now kicking themselves asking what did they get themselves into.
I don't doubt that you picked up a few scraps of info from the Tech coaching staff. Of course that's how "The Leftovers" are going to spin things. Notre Dame is a fluid situation and that is probably causing some consternation.

Here's a quote from the Denver Post blog over the weekend.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/college...h-talks-candidly-about-why-he-left-unh/20024/

“Obviously, he’s [coach Gwozdecky] very excited about the new league and led me to believe that things are going on right now that his situation at Denver would be a little prolonged — longer termed than you just mentioned.”

- DU assistant coach David Lassonde

Wait WHUT? Gwoz is gonna get his new contract!!11!1! So the demise of 57 other teams is finally averted. Oh thank you all-powerful gwOZ.

Are they gonna let him put "NHL General Manager" in his title? I know it's not the NHL and just the NCAA but everything Gwoz has done has been so reminiscent of all the smart moves Brian Burke makes .. ya know?

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

this just in: the new league is begging SCSU to join, mainly to p off Sioux fans.
SCSU isn't going to be in the new league their President said so right after he turned down an invitation to a league that he was nver invited to join in the first place.

I'm sure its a lot more than consternation.

Notre Dame joining is a must or the issues begin 2 years before the conference ever starts up.
They need Notre Dame for legitimacy, and the first domino falls if they cannot get them.

UMD, Miami, CC, and UNO will not achieve a consistent level of success and their fanbases will not adjust.

My only hope is that the recruits away from this new conference stronghold continue the strong regional traditions of college hockey and largely ignore the NCHC for their favorite teams growing up and close to family.

Then, the demise of the league will be started when at least 2 of the potential futile four members Miami, UNO, UMD, or CC cannot achieve consistent success and look to move elsewhere as the excessive travel costs and loss of revenue due to an ambivalent fanbase brought on by the losing makes the move to the NCHC an unfortunate mistake for a couple of these schools.

HAHAHAHAHA. I am a UMD fan! I know we are not going to have a consistent level of success. It has always occurred in our history and that is fine to me.

Are UNO, CC and Miami fans programs that have always had a consistent level of success? If you follow their histories as a program I would say probably not. They have had up and down years.

Will MTU's fanbase adjust to a easier WCHA? Will they want to join the NCHC to remember the good ole days? (1981 to current days!?)

:)

Haha, in Miami's case try 20+ down years with a couple decent ones thrown in there. :)

Huskiefan - I'm not really sure if you are trolling or not. But as a Miami fan I'm not loosing too much sleep over the risk of fans deserting the program. Our hockey program has been heavily supported by the community (yes, I do realize it is a very small community) for a long time, and it has become a big enough part of the culture at Miami that I don't see our student support disappearing after a couple down years.

As far as revenue goes, whatever our financial situation is going into this conference in 2013 is not likely to change based on performance, product of having a small arena.

Steve Cady Arena - 3,200 seats
Students = ~1,000 seats
Reserved seats = ~2,200

Students don't pay for tickets - it's a base fee included in tuition. You could argue the school would loose money on concessions if student don't show up but since most are using a meal plan they will be eating elsewhere on campus so that is a non-issue.

Right now there are over 600 people (assume most want 2-4 seats) on the wait list for season tickets, based on past turnover they estimate that is about a 3 season wait, and that list is constantly growing as more and more graduates with a strong hockey interest are moving into a position where they can afford that investment. If the administration was worried about waning fan interest I would imagine that they could require a multiple year commitment on season ticket purchases and people would still gladly sign off - presumably at that point there would be enough people on that list to sell nearly every reserved seat in the arena.

Edit: As far as advertising goes - our center ice logos this year were Quiznos and a student bar. I don't think local franchises are exactly paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to get those bad boys slapped down around the face off circle. So even if the team took a nose dive that would probably still be a prudent investment for them per what it probably costs.

Probably the funniest thing to me of all of this is the fact that if Notre Dame joins the NCHC, the other schools are most likely going to get taken to the cleaners financially. I see the other schools having to give up huge chunks of revenue to ND, like upwards of 50% of revenue generated by the league.

I think that may be the reason why ND hasn't joined yet, they might be asking some serious demands from the others.

The crazy part is the state of Minnesota has highschool rinks that size.

I love the atmosphere of the small rink, but yeah, it is very small. We would be able to fill a 6,000 person rink for Michigan without blinking an eye, but when the majority of our alumni live, at the very least over an hour away, it's just hard to get that kind of draw on a Friday night in January to play Bowling Green.

And on a Friday night in January, it's likely going to be hard to get that kind of draw for UMD, CC, UNO, Denver and UND because none of them, for people in Ohio and Michigan, have the allure of playing UofM. Also of your estimated 6000 people, how many would be UofM fans? How many fans of these other teams will show up in Miami?

This entire league formation has me puzzled as it appeared rushed and shortsighted. As others have pointed out Notre Dame seems to be holding all the cards right now which can't be good for the small schools involved; it seems it would have been smart to lock in Notre Dame up front instead of after the fact.

As an MTU fan, I think what's happened to the leagues is a plus for MTU long term. I'm not so sure I'd think that as one of the smaller schools in this conference. Best of luck to you all.

Yeah that was point...not sure where you are going with this. Miami has no plans to expand their arena. It was built with that in mind and as such every game is "sold out" before the season starts. Sounds like you are trying to be a little argumentitive without reading what I was actually saying.

But to answer your question about visiting fans, no. CCHA fans do not come to Oxford. The best visiting fan contingent I saw last year was the UNH crowd, that was the first time I heard anything other than crickets after an opponent's goal.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Giwan said in his post ..." From a very solid source", so I would tend to take him at his word. But what does it really mean to ask what they have gotten themselves into.
To me it means... The expenses are higher than they thought, the revenue is lower, the exposure is not what they thought, dealing with some of the personalities is difficult.. etc.
Maybe they should have thought about this more ahead of time. Not to say it was a bad move for them, just to say there should be no surprises and it seems there are some.

also.. Notre Dame announced today that they were staying independent for football and in the big east for all other sports.. HMMMMM.
And Texas A and M is leaving the big 12 at a cost of 15 million dollars... exit fee.
Just food for thought.

This is the closest thing I see to an announcement.
“Our priority — and our clear priority — is maintaining our football independence and continuing to build our relationship with the Big East with our other sports,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Monday morning when asked if there was a viable chance his school could join the Big 12 now or in the near future.
I don't know if that closes the door for hockey to move elsewhere.

Clearly, they're joining Atlantic Hockey to continue to "build their relationship" with UConn.
