Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Well after WMU and BGSU decide they aren't coming to the WCHA (crossing fingers) and SCSU get's snatched up by the Butt Hurts (double finger crossing), how many teams will the WCHA have? I think I count 8. Then the WCHA can add Huntsville.

The problem SCSU has is if they were invited and don't go you know as well as me another WCHA team would go if asked. If Notre Dame says no and they need to add two teams I am pretty sure they are getting the two teams from the WCHA. I don't like what DU and UND started, but at some point you have to fend for your self or get stomped on. OF course I expect Notre Dame to join and thent he WCHA will be stuck with 11 or 12 teams, which in my opinion sucks.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of inviting all those CCHA teams. And you are correct 8 would have been the best number. The Butt Hurts were stupid not to invite the Alaska schools. Plain and simple. But I suspect most of their Butthurtitude stemmed from coaching staffs that were sick of the travel to Anchorage every year (without giving a moments consideration to the financial benefits of doing so) ... as well of course, as being sick of not getting their way in conference member votes on various issues. They could have actually had some measurable benefits from their choice to form a conference. Now they have nothing but speculation and bluster as benefits.

Perhaps some of the fans of those Butt Hurt schools should be asking their administrations where exactly they'll be replacing the lost revenue from two extra home games a year.

The ability schedule more nonconference home games to begin with?

Exactly. Why wouldn't they want to go to Alaska? The one big complaint about college hockey is to few games and then you make a new confernece and don't invite at least one Alaska school. That is just plain stupid....

Not if you have 8 teams. Isn't that the hold up with notre Dame not joining? They want a seven team league and the NCHC wants a eight team league? A 8 team league has 28 game conference schedule and without a Alaska team that means a 34 game season schedule. They get 36 games now every year they play in Alaska.

Being able to schedule 2 more games out of conference only matters if you can (a) get those extra games at home and hosting extra home games are profit generators, or (b) sell those games for a large guarantee. Consistently.

I think the number of teams for whom the Alaska games are a palatable advantage for is wildly overstated on these boards.

Notre Dame wants seven teams and the NCHC is OK with that. The hold-up is that Notre Dame is trying to figure out all the television ramifications.

Most likely the BCS turmoil has thrown hockey on Notre Dame's backburner. Latest crazy BCS rumor is Texas going to the ACC.

This is college hockey. There are no TV ramifications.

By "television ramifications" you mean "How much money will the other six teams be giving up to Notre Dame?" 50% of all revenue? 60%? 2/3?

Doubtful. What revenue is there to be shared in college hockey?

TV college hockey contracts are basically break-even or loss-leader propositions. The conference tournament revenue will in large part be used to fund the referees, travel and league office.

Notre Dame's TV Network is going to largely be internet based, so doubtful that will draw many eyeballs for college hockey.

Not too terribly long ago there were three T.V. networks and college football contracts were basically break-even or loss-leader propositions. The distortion of the reactionary view of the past is only surpassed by the reactionary view of the future.

Really? This coming from the guy who's been spouting that the NCHC has an "imminent TV deal"? Nice to know that even you don't believe that anymore.

Actually what I meant by revenue was ALL revenue generated by the league: Sponsorships, playoff revenue, membership fees, everything. Quite frankly, to get what you and what it seems this league wants, the league needs a face, and Notre Dame is the only face available. And when you need a face, it comes at a high price. You really think ND is gonna come in and be "Hully Gee boys we're all in this together! I'm gonna call me friends at NBC and get us some cash! Oh them fans of mine in the stands that we'll get will surely share their money with you!" No. I'm willing to bet that Notre Dame either wants a) A high percentage cut of profit generated or, failing that, b) A guaranteed sum of cash from the other schools.

To me, those are the only ways ND joins up. Because Notre Dame could do just as well as an Independent.

What you posted above is absurd. We're talking about college hockey, not hiring a good looking hooker.

You also need to get your facts straight. The Versus Network was mentioned a possible NCHC media outlet according to an article in the Duluth Times-Tribune.

And that report was probably planted there by the LTHC PR guy.

5,000 seat home arena + $25/ticket x 2 games = $250,000 revenue. There is no way to overstate that. Whut? $20 a ticket? Ok then ... $200,000 in revenue. You only have 2,500 seats? Gee, looks like you only make an extra $125,000 from having 2 extra home games. What was last years WCHA Final Five check that everyone creamed their jeans about? Oh yeah, 120 grand.

Maybe thinking is a different thing there in Boston than it is way out west?
