Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Dear Lakers,

Please help out the Sioux by beating Denver tonight. Thanks!

Hey Anzalone Lovers - didn't the LSSU administration already make that mistake once by bringing him back for four years with single digit wins? What was his overall record from 01-05? Oh yea, 32-97-20, or 32 wins in 149 tries. Roque at least has had double digit win totals since he took over, and had almost double the wins over the same time period from 05-09 with 57. Still not where any of us want to be, but seriously, isn't the definition of insanity doing something over and over expecting a different result?

Frank Anzalone is the man responsible for putting Lake Superior State College on the map and giving you people 3 National Championships. He came in to a decimated program and was building it back up slowly with discipline on and off the ice.

That was shown after the coup and him being run out of town by the team getting to the CCHA Championships. Those were Frank's players and with him behind the bench they would have continued progressing to where they would be now, a consistent contender in the CCHA and NCAA's.

There are teams and communities that see the hard work and tremendous man Frank Anzalone is and his current team, the Quad City Mallards will be contenders for years to come thanks to the hard work and tremendous talent that is Frank Anzalone.

The Truth Is Out There......

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Truth, wasn't Anzalone in Denver trying to get the coaching job there while he was still at Lake State and didn't he put the Sault and the college down at the time ?

Truth Squid has a point.

I mean, who can forget all of the CCHA teams that begged Frank to coach their programs once the Lakers let him go? There were so many teams after him, it was ...

...ummmm...wait...

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Hey Neil what happened with your main man Jimbos Lakers tonight? Do you have any positive spin or should we just wait for the Laker Show Monday? One thing for sure is you folks definately are worth a laugh or two when you try to defend old Jimbo and his losing ways.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

You can't give up 5 goals and win. You either have bad defense, bad goaltending, both, or a team making mistakes over and over that are costing them every week.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I was pretty impressed with the solid game LSSU played tonight. While the scoreline was 6-3 Denver, it was actually a very close game. The Lakers had a great game plan to clog the neutral zone and take advantage of Denver turnovers, and Denver was pretty lucky to get goals on some odd bounces. Monardo has a great shot, and I was also impressed with Acton and Trotman, who play a very smart style of hockey. LSSU's only issue that I could see was the depth on the lower lines, which took it's toll late in the game - perhaps altitude and travel also hurt.

The Lakers look like a team that can play with anyone, and if they can get some depth, they can be a very tough out.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Great comments Puck Swami. The Lakers do struggle with depth at times but are improving. Thanks for the constructive comments in an otherwise gong show blog that gets clogged up with trash talk. There were great performances on both sides of the puck last night and overall a very entertaining hockey game. Hopefully the Lakers are playing their best hockey in February-March and can break the cycle of early exits in the CCHA playoffs.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Tonight's defeat marked Roque's 100th loss as head coach of the Lakers. Crazy Frank holds the record for most losses in a coaching stint with the Lakers with 108 losses his first time around. Roque might break it this year, sadly.

Lakers just continue to lay eggs on the road. Why can't the Lakers win on the road?

As I posted over on the score update site, the Lakers are now winless in their last 18 games on the road.

Oh brother, cry me a river. You and Bill think you have some kind of birth right to this thread. It's an open thread, why is that so hard for you to understand? Anyhow the Lakers lose yet again tonight. No real surprise there, that seems to be Jimbo & The Gong Show's specialty.

Kind of funny you have dropped the T.B.A. From your posting Truth or Theresa.

Guys I will let it drop now.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

The bleeding has to stop. Power plays that yield nothing but useless attempts . Mistakes that lead to goals that never should have happen . Coaching that seems to be no further ahead today than when it took over 6 years earlier . Eighteen straight losses on the road and it looks as if they may beat the Lions winless road streak if things stay as they are. Roque needs to hire a coach who can take over and teach the coaching staff a different approach to coaching and to the game of hockey. Lakers also need players to take the lead but they seem short in that department as well. Another weekend of hockey that will end on the Roque show with the coach proclaiming the team just needs to get a lucky bounce here and there and they will turn things around. It is the same thing this year as it is every year under Roque. In the end the Lakers lose because no matter how many shots, how many powerplays, how many turn- overs they get, they just cannot score . I feel sorry for the goalies when they play a great game but their teammates do nothing but take useless shots at the other end.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Colin Campbell. What was the reason everyone was so excited about getting this guy again ? The kid has played 16 games now and he has 2 goals no assist for a grand total of 2 points on the season . What was all the hoopla about in bringing this kid in. Don't say ,oh,he is going to develope into a good one. At his age,if he hasn't developed yet,you are wishing on a falling star . Coach Roque . ON your show tomorrow night, tell the audience you got swept because your team just isn't good enough to win but please don't tell us just a bounce here and a bounce there and a bit of luck and they win every game. Skill wins games, not a prayer that somehow the other guys screw up making it possible for your guys to win. Western MI gets a new coaching staff and they are already better than they have been the last 5 years.

sm2pk, no reason to be so upset !
Those who are a little sharp, or have had inside information over the years, don't expect anything because it is just not possible.

Once in a while, the laws of probability will give you a win, may be a shutout, sometimes a sweep, and the shortsighted fans will see the sparrow making the summer, even for Thanksgiving (at least, wait for Christmas).
Most teams can play a game without having neither a consistent direction, nor clear instructions, nor sensible decisions, nor equitable treatment amongst the players (with changing pets and scapegoats), nor an individual feeling of growth ... but you cannot expect them to make it night after night, and you can't blame them when they fail, as they are just swimming against the stream.

If the fundamentals are not there, how can you expect a consistent result ?
When they are not there after four years although it is the first thing to set up ... why bother ?

He had very good statistics for an 18 year old in Junior A and represented Team Canada East during last year's World Junior A Championships. I think we all expected much more from him.

As for this weekend's results, well you know my feeling on "small schools" competing against big powers like Denver so there was no surprise there but we all should be disappointed in how they played against Clarkson.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I think the criticism of solely Campbell is a little unfair....although in my opinion the freshmen have played well scheme wise they simply haven't found the back of the net...In fact Campbell has more goals than any other freshman. This team is a work in progress with so many young pieces and to really expect a win out of any game of the past 4 other than Clarkson would be overestimating in my opinion. When an elite program like Denver has fans that are patting this team on the back and saying that a 6-3 game was much closer than the score indicated and that they basically lucked out to get the win that is something that shouldn't be taken for granted. Fans of elite programs don't necessarily hand out atta-boys all the time especially to teams in a rival conference. I can't speak to either game because I didn't see them but by all accounts the Lakers played well on Friday, and Saturday appears to have been a close game..The offense needs everyone to step up, Monardo can't do it all himself (although he's giving it a hell of a try)....This weekend's home series against Bowling Green is the biggest of the season thus far, BG has stepped up their game with Chris Bergeron as coach, he was certainly the right man for the job... He ran some player camps that I attended back when he was playing minor league hockey in Port Huron and he's a level-headed guy who really knows the game...I imagine that working under what I consider to be the best coach in the CCHA today (no offense, Red) in Enrico Blasi has only furthered his growth. I look for KK to get the start on Friday...7 goals from the Lakers on the weekend should be worth at least 4 points...

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

This team seems to get better every game.

The Lakers really played well despite the fact they lost 6-3.

The Lakers really played well despite scoring only one goal against Clarkson. They should have had 6 or 7.

The other teams just have players with more stick skills.

We need some more puck luck and things will be fine.

It's hard for the smaller schools these days to compete like they used too.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I was able to watch the Friday game on the excellent FSN Rocky Mountain coverage. For starters, it is hilarious that Denver Hockey's primary sponsor on TV is Porsche Automobiles. The Denver fanbase appears to be in a slightly higher tax bracket than us Lake State fans. (even more reason we all need to contribute when we can! I sent in the $80 I pledged for 8 goals scored in the Superior Showdown)

Lake State did control much of the play in the first period. Still, it looked like a mediocre team playing really hard(LSSU), while a really speedy, talented team (DU) still had one foot at the Thanksgiving table. I wasn't thinking "boy, we're going to win this one!" I was thinking, "we need to get some pucks in the net before Denver wakes up, or we're going to get killed." Then Denver scores a rebound goal with 3 (THREE!!!) Lake State defenders standing there watching the puck, and you just knew the game was over.

Jim Roque apparently talked to the FSN Rocky Mountain guys about how inconsistent the team is. They said he used the word inconsistent over and over again. I think when you've been head coach for 4+ years, it is a bad sign when you are talking about how good your team is some nights, and how bad it is other nights. Or how they play well for 50 minutes, then have breakdowns which cost them games. If they are talented enough to play well some of the time, then IT IS YOUR JOB TO GET THEM TO PLAY THAT WELL ALL THE TIME. Just my $.02.

I'm giving Colin Campbell at least a few more months before I pass judgment. In the few games I've seen on TV, he has made some nice plays even if he didn't make the score sheet. Though I think Trent Campbell was leading the team in scoring by this point in his freshmen year...... The guy I'm missing this year is Power. What happened to him? Is he hurt or something. He had a pretty solid freshman year once he adjusted, but I barely even hear his name anymore. Ben! It's the big brick building with the red roof and all the banners!

On recruiting. It is starting to drive me crazy every time I hear Roque and Crawford talking about "replacing the guys we're losing." This is ridiculous. We shouldn't be looking to replace people we are losing, we should be looking to find more skaters like Monardo. The guy skates pretty well, was wicked moves, and just has a nose for the net. The way he looked off those defenders and then drove the puck into the net on Friday was simple and beautiful at the same time. There is a reason that Roque and Co. are hockey coaches, and I am a not, but if they are out there looking for the next Chad Nehring instead of the next Domenic Monardo, then things can't improve that much. And that's nothing against Nehring. By all accounts he is a ridiculously hard worker and he put up 12 goals last year. I just think the focus needs to be on getting more skaters with Monardo's skill set.

We have a big December coming up. If we don't get 9 points or more, I think the season will slip away from us.
