Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

#41 - Princeton Tigers
All-Time Record (Division 1): 931-1272-125 (.427)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 3 (1998, 2008, 2009)
NCAA Tournament Record: 0-3
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 0 Tournament - 2 (ECAC - 1998, 2008)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 7.1971
Change: 0.2534 (+3.65%)
Last Season Position: 41 (unchanged)

The Princeton Tigers come in at #41. The Tigers struggled this season, winning only 6 games, the program's fewest since the Len Quesnelle era. In the three seasons since Guy Gadowsky left, head coach Bob Prier has struggled, going just 25-58-12 (.326). Were it not for conference mates Yale and Union winning the last two national championships, the Tigers would be falling in points, and falling in these rankings. Princeton will look to repeat what happened the last time they were in a rut, and bounce back with improving season win totals that ultimately culminated in two trips to the NCAA Tournament and an ECAC Tournament Title. It will be a difficult task, as the ECAC is currently at the top of the heap as a conference. However, if they can do it, they should be able to rise up these rankings. For now, the Tigers sit at #41.

This is great stuff you are working up, FS.

So, you gonna give us the top 50 Supreme Court Decisions next, or are you leaving all that con law back where it belongs?

#40 - Niagara Purple Eagles
All-Time Record (Division 1): 320-253-72 (.552)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 4 (2000, 2004, 2008, 2013)
NCAA Tournament Record: 1-4
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 4 (CHA - 1999-2000, 2005-2006, 2006-2007; Atlantic Hockey - 2012-2013) Tournament - 3 (CHA - 2000, 2004, 2008)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 7.9213
Change: - 0.2578 (- 3.15%)
Last Season Position: 39 (down 1 spot)

The Niagara Purple Eagles come in at #40. Niagara had a rough season by their standards, dropping below the .500 mark for just the fifth time in program history, and just the second time in the last 9 seasons. Moreover, their 20 losses this season tied a program record for most losses in a season. The Purple Eagles nearly salvaged their season in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, beating Air Force in Colorado Springs to advance to the Semifinals. Unfortunately for Niagara, their run would end there, as they fell to Robert Morris in a heartbreaker in overtime after scoring twice in the final 3:03 to force the extra session. The Purple Eagles have a young team though, and they return 5 of their top 6 scorers, and both goalies. That should give coach Dave Burkholder a good chance to claim some hardware next season, and perhaps grab the program's fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament. If they do, look for Niagara to move up in the rankings. For now, they sit at #40.

#39 - Western Michigan Broncos
All-Time Record (Division 1): 663-700-139 (.488)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 5 (1986, 1994, 1996, 2011, 2012)
NCAA Tournament Record: 0-6

National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 7.9725
Change: + 0.2788 (+ 3.62%)
Last Season Position: 40 (up 1 spot)

The Western Michigan Broncos come in at #39. The highest ranked program to have yet to reach a Frozen Four, Western Michigan is currently on an up-swing. The Broncos recently completed their fourth consecutive winning season, something that hadn't been done in 20 years in Kalamazoo. Under Coach Andy Murray, the Broncos are set up for success in the upcoming season with three double-digit goal scorers coming back, along with goalies Frank Slubowski and Lukas Hafner. Western Michigan will have their work cut out for them, but if the Broncos can continue having winning seasons, they should continue to move up these rankings. They currently have the most tournament appearances (5) without a victory, and most games played (6) without a tournament victory. If those numbers can improve as well, and if the program can make a trip to the Frozen Four, they have the potential to make a big leap. For now, they sit at #39.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1-#59

Western won the CCHA tournament in 1986, also.

Good Catch, and thank you for the correction. I had it entered in the formula correctly, but apparently didn't even think about it when typing up the post. I have edited the original post to reflect the two CCHA Tournament titles.

#38 - Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers
All-Time Record (Division 1): 163-132-37 (.547)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 1 (2010)
NCAA Tournament Record: 2-1
Frozen Four Appearances: 1
Best Results: National Semifinalist (2010)

National Championships: 0

Last Season Position: 38 (unchanged)

The RIT Tigers come in at #38. Their 163 wins at the Division 1 level are the third fewest (only Robert Morris and Penn State have fewer) of any program currently playing D-1 Hockey, but the magical run that the Tigers went on in 2010 still keeps them above the non-Frozen Four programs. However, if the Tigers continue to have seasons like this last campaign, they might slip in these rankings. Last year, RIT won only 12 games, their fewest since their first season at the D-1 level. That meant that the Tigers have now had consecutive losing seasons for the first time in the program's short D-1 history. Head Coach Wayne Wilson will have his work cut out for him next season, as RIT will lose several top scorers, but they should return each of their goalies. If Coach Wilson can right the ship and get the Tigers back to winning conference hardware, making trips to the NCAA Tournament, and make some noise in that tournament, the Tigers could be back on the prowl trying to climb up these rankings. For now, they sit at #38.

I suspect their 132 losses are also among the fewest in D-I.

#37 - Bemidji State Beavers
All-Time Record (Division 1): 312-304-66 (.506)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 4 (2005, 2006, 2009, 2010)
NCAA Tournament Record: 2-4
Frozen Four Appearances: 1
Best Results: National Semifinalist (2009)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 5 (CHA - 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010) Tournament - 3 (CHA - 2005, 2006, 2009)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 12.3169
Change: 0.0496 (+ 0.40%)
Last Season Position: 36 (down 1 spot)

The Bemidji State Beavers come in at #37. The Beavers have struggled since making the move to the WCHA, going just 48-79-23 in their four years in the league. That trend seems to be getting worse, as the Beavers have only won 16 games the past two seasons, after averaging 16 wins their first two seasons. However, one bright side for Bemidji State is that they had a young team this past season, and they should be able to improve. Head Coach Tom Serratore has proven that he is capable of getting the most out of the Beavers, and if he can do that next season, and couple it with perhaps some conference hardware and/or a trip to the NCAA Tournament, Bemidji State may be able to move up in the rankings. After all, last season's #37 ranked team was Union, and they managed to do alright this year. Bemidji has a nice cushion on the teams below them, so it would take a strong performance and perhaps even a Frozen Four run from one of those teams to drop another spot. For now, the Beavers sit at #37.

#36 - Vermont Catamounts
All-Time Record (Division 1): 591-648-111 (.479)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 6 (1988, 1996, 1997, 2009, 2010, 2014)
NCAA Tournament Record: 3-7
Frozen Four Appearances: 2
Best Results: National Semifinalist (1996, 2009)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 1 (ECAC - 1995-1996) Tournament - 0
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 17.4219
Change: 0.9236 (+ 5.60%)
Last Season Position: 34 (down 2 spots)

The Vermont Catamounts come in at #36. The Catamounts had a strong season, winning 20 games for the first time since 2008-2009, and making their first NCAA Tournament Appearance since 2010. The Catamounts have had their share of success since joining Hockey East following the 2004-2005 season, but they have failed to take home any conference hardware in that time. Barring a team below having a great run in the NCAA Tournament, they have a solid enough cushion to at least hold on to the #36 spot. Vermont will look to end their conference hardware drought next season, as they return a solid group including 4 of their top 5 scorers and both top netminders. If they can, and perhaps make another trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Catamounts will have a good shot at reclaiming some of the spots they lost this season to risers in the rankings (Lowell and Union). For now, they sit at #36.

#35 - Massachusetts Lowell Riverhawks
All-Time Record (Division 1): 497-536-92 (.483)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 6 (1988, 1994, 1996, 2012, 2013, 2014)
NCAA Tournament Record: 7-6-1
Frozen Four Appearances: 1
Best Results: National Semifinalist (2013)
Conference Championships: Regular Season - 1 (Hockey East - 2012-2013) Tournament - 2 (Hockey East - 2013, 2014)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 17.8988
Change: 3.4451 (+ 23.84%)
Last Season Position: 35 (unchanged)

The Massachusetts Lowell Riverhawks come in at #35. Under Head Coach Norm Bazin, the Riverhawks have been one of the nation's top programs. In his three seasons, Lowell has made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament (best stretch in program history), won their only league regular season title, won their only two league tournament titles, won 24 or more games each season (to put that into perspective, the Riverhawks had never been over .500 in any three year stretch at the D-1 level in their history prior), and made the program's first ever Frozen Four. The only reason why Lowell didn't rise any spots in the rankings was due to Union leaping over them. Coach Bazin will have his work cut out for him next season though, as Lowell returns only 1 of their top 4 scorers from this last season, and the Riverhawks will start an untested netminder. However, given what Bazin has done in his three years at the program, Lowell fans should rightfully be confident that they have the right person in charge behind the bench. If Coach Bazin can continue his success at Lowell, they will continue to rise up the rankings. For now, they sit at #35.

#34 - Ohio State Buckeyes
All-Time Record (Division 1): 821-841-140 (.494)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 6 (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009)
NCAA Tournament Record: 2-6-0

Conference Championships: Regular Season - 1 (CCHA - 1971-1972) Tournament - 2 (CCHA - 1972, 2004)
National Championships: 0
Points Earned - 19.2421
Change: 0.7356 (+ 3.97%)
Last Season Position: 33 (down 1 spot)

The Ohio State Buckeyes come in at #34. The Buckeyes had a solid season in the inaugural season of the Big Ten Hockey Conference under the leadership of first year head coach Steve Rohlik. OSU had their first winning season since 2009, lost their fewest games since 2005, and were agonizingly close to making their seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament before squandering a two goal lead late in the game, and losing in overtime. However, it must be seen as progress for the Buckeyes, as they look to contend with some of college hockey's best programs in the Big Ten. Ohio State should have another solid run next season, as the Buckeyes return 4 of their top 5 scorers from last season, along with each of their goalies. If the Buckeyes are able to start making some noise in the Big Ten, perhaps win some conference hardware in the near future and make a few more trips to the NCAA Tournament, OSU has a great chance to shoot up these rankings. For now, they sit at #34.
