The Brown Bears come in at #33. The highest ranked team to have never won its conference regular season or tournament title, the Bears have been relying on ancient achievements to stay in the middle of these rankings. Their highlight season came in 1951, when the Bears advanced to the National Championship game only to fall to Michigan 7-1. The last time Brown won 20 or more games was in 1976 when they won 23, and they have only hit the 20+ win mark twice (1965). However, the ECAC is currently in a remarkable resurgence, and that should help Brown going forward. The Bears return 7 of their top 9 scorers and their top goalie. That should give head coach Brendan Whittet the firepower he needs to have Brown make a run at a winning record. Whittet will have to make such improvements for the Bears to rise in these rankings. Perhaps getting the school's first piece of conference hardware and a return back to the NCAA Tournament would be a great start to resurrecting the program. For now, the Bears sit at #33.

The St. Cloud State Huskies come in at #32. The Huskies had another strong season, advancing to the Regional finals for the third time in the past five seasons, and won their second consecutive conference regular season championship. St. Cloud State's 64.5% winning percentage was also the program's highest under head coach Bob Motzko, and the highest since 2001-2002. Gone are the days of SCSU being known as the program that couldn't win in the NCAA Tournament, as they are 4-3 in their last 7 NCAA Tournament games. In Coach Motzko's 9 years at St. Cloud State, the Huskies have had only 1 losing season, made 5 trips to the NCAA Tournament, won both of their regular season conference titles, and advanced to the program's first frozen four. If the Huskies can continue this type of success, they will be moving up in the rankings, and I see them as one of the most likely programs to claim their first National Championship in the near future. For now, they sit at #32.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats come in at #31, the top team in the bottom half of the rankings. Quinnipiac had another solid season this past campaign, winning 24 games and making a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. While it was not enough to hold off Union's National Championship run, it was enough to hold off St. Cloud State for the #31 spot. The Bobcats have never had a sub .500 season at the D-1 level, the only program currently playing college hockey to be able to lay such a claim. The Bobcats will have their work cut out for them next season as they look to keep their impressive streak together for yet another season. Quinnipiac loses 4 of their top 7 scorers, but return nearly everyone along the blueline, and also return both netminders. Coupled with head coach Rand Pecknold's leadership behind the bench and the winning tradition the Bobcats have established, another winning season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament are entirely possible. If they do that, the Bobcats will look to move up into the top half of the rankings. For now, they sit at #31.

The Northeastern Huskies come in at #30...the middle team in the rankings. Interestingly, Northeastern is the highest ranked team to have never won their regular season conference championship. The Huskies have struggled since their last trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, going just 71-83-23 in that span. However, there is reason for optimism for the Northeastern faithful, as they had their first winning season since that 2008-2009 campaign last season. Under third year coach Jim Madigan the Huskies improved by 10 wins from the 2012-2013 season, winning 19 games. Northeastern will return 8 of their top 9 scorers next season, and Super Senior Clay Witt will come back between the pipes. The future is bright heading into next season, and if the Huskies can improve on their 2013-2014 campaign, get back to winning seasons, make return trips to the NCAA Tournament, and perhaps win some more conference hardware, Northeastern has a great chance of moving back up to the "upper half" of college hockey. For now, they sit in the middle at #30.

Witt is returning for next season and is one of the team captains. (Secondarily, I don't even expect Roy to be the second goalie, but he could be.)

I do apologize. Work has been crazy this summer, as we're getting ready for a 4 week trial that starts on Monday. Once that's over (read: early August) I should have plenty of time to get going on the list.

What kind of trial? Do you have the bar exam later this month, or did you finish last year (already)?

Civil. Public sector Union discrimination under 1983.

I'm an "evening" student (I.e. I take classes part-time while working full-time), so it normally takes 4 years to finish. I'll finish in 3.5 (this December), so I'll take the February bar.
