The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

Well maybe I didn't go into enough detail. You must not have watched us play this year or most of the Granato era. Our defense was atrocious. I have watched Mankato enough to know it won't be all offense, no defense and the fundamentals will be much better. There is plenty of talent on this team, if they can get on board with playing the 200' game as Tim said above, this will be a quick turn around. Hopefully, he can develop these guys and get them playing as a team vs individuals. I am excited.
What you will get is a disciplined hockey team. Discipline will be his approach from day 1. Discipline in buying into the non negotiable daily things that are expected. Doing drills right. Showing up at the right time (20mins early) for workouts, etc.

The success is so imminent at Wisconsin I’m jealous.

Fair enough....I'm just used to too many know-it-alls from about 90 minutes to the northwest that think he plays a trap and can only win by clutching and grabbing. He's not Mike Eaves. I truly believe it willbe a quick turnaround for you guys. Remember, we went from 12 to 24 wins in his first year....and, yes, that was in the last year of the old WCHA. Sorry I misunderstood, my eyes glazed over for about the last 2 hours. This is not great for us, but hopefully Todd Knott can take us to the next level.

LOL. I have been and admirer of your program for years. I wanted Mike 7 years ago and we got Granato. I am too lazy and busy to go find the posts, but suffice to say, I am looking forward to this change.

Oh yeah, get used to about 3 years of age jokes from that fanbase too. That's funny for the first 5231 times.

I wouldn't be opposed to keeping Brandt around as a number 2 guy. Other than last year he's worked with very successful and highly regarded coaches. The key will be to get a great number one who can recruit and to find a solid goalie coach. And remember now they can have 4 paid assistants.

Yeah but he majorly screwed up by giving Tony one more year. It was pretty obvious to all that there was no evidence that this team was going to suddenly become an ncaa qualifying team under his leadership this last season. Plus the reduction of the buyout on the contract restructure is chump change to a university of this financial magnitude.

And to pay millions of dollars to a search firm to pick the most obvious choice possible is questionable. It was obvious to everybody of this thread that Hastings was the best choice, pick up the phone and call the guy.

In regard to the buyout though, that wouldn't be his call would it? Sounds like a decision from above him. Maybe he did want to make a change last year and his hands were tied because of that. Or maybe he did reach out to Hastings' camp and found out he wasn't ready to leave Mankato. In any event if my team went winless in a season but it meant I would then get Mike Hastings I would take that painful year.

I'm just devastated. You're getting a great guy who does things the right way. And he's great with the fans, too. I was having dinner after a game with one of my friends, both in Mavs gear. Hastings came in with his family for dinner. Shortly, the waiter brought my friend and I a beer each, said Coach Hastings sent it over because we were in Mavs jerseys and caps.

I was already concerned because a couple of the better players who still had eligibility left (Pavel and Hirose) took pro offers. Now this. I can only wish Coach Hastings all the best, and see what our future looks like in Mankato. *Heavy Sigh*

Agreed and my next question is who the assistants are going to be?

It was interesting (to me, anyway) that when Coach Hastings came to Mankato, he kept the 2 assistants who were already there. And they became a great team. Hoping he does the same for you guys, to provide a little stabilty to your program (and so we keep our assistants in Kato!).

Well, it it interesting to me that they kept on Andy Brandt when Granato and Osiecki were let go. Even more interesting is that he was out recruiting yesterday when this was announced. Maybe he is staying on and they had an inkling for several weeks which direction they were going. They will definitely need a new #1 / Associate coach and hopefully the 4th paid coach is a goalie coach. I know Osiecki was one of, if not the highest paid assistant in college, so money will be good for whoever that is.

Very interesting. Oz was awesome under Eaves, but under tg not so much, unless tg was just dragging him down.

That’s the million dollar question!

press conference with Hastings on Monday btw.

What’s Howie up to? Would he want to coach goalies for a couple of years?

Don Granato texted Hastings yesterday “Welcome to the Badger family”. Awesome!

man…on top of being great Badger hockey players and Badger royalty the Granato’s are just pure class acts.

Howie was awesome beyond any doubt, one of my favorite all-time Badger coach or player, but has the game passed him by? I think there are probably better choices out there.

Howie is about to turn 79 and you would have to start by explaining to recruits who Cujo, Richter (oh....the award guy is what most kids would exclaim), etc are. Besides, I have heard Howie is thinking about running for President since a prerequisite seems to be being in your mid 70's.
