The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

I don’t think it is realistic for any program to expect to never finish outside the top three in the conference with all the parity in college hockey today.

I agree. Given the strength of the B1G, the sudden departure of talent to the NHL that can happen after a great year and so on, there will be occasional rebuilding years for all the B1G schools. That being said, I think it's entirely reasonable to think that Wisconsin, with its history and resources, should never be a multi-year punching bag in the conference.

100% agree with the latter part of your post. I don’t think Wisconsin should settle for finishing in the basement of the Big Ten for long stretches. My point was more that there really has been an increased commitment to hockey at Michigan State (renovation of Munn and have a very good coach now) and Penn State has given a ton of attention to their program. With those two programs continuing to rise, the Big Ten is going to be very competitive the next 5+ years.

Getting the Wisconsin program healthy again will be good for the conference and will make the conference as a whole that much stronger. But I don’t think ANY program in the Big Ten should expect to finish in the top half of the conference perennially. That includes Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

I saw another tweet from a couple days ago from an SCSU insider that says rumblings, but never said more.....

IDK, he inherited a great team and is just getting through the last of the inherited players. He did make the ncaa's all the non-covid years. What is his eye for talent?

He would be able to attract more high level talent to UW than he can currently at SCSU.

Dave Shyiak is one of his assistants. He was the longtime head coach from AA. As long as he can recruit or hire a great assistant for that, he will be fine. He's been successful. Don't even know if it is him yet.

Looks like it is Mike Hastings. Great coach. Wonder what his recruiting philosophy will he at Wisconsin. Tended to build older rosters at Minnesota State.

He needs to bring Todd Knott who is known as one of the top recruiters in college hockey.

This is a great hire. But you bring up a good point about his recruits at Mankato.
