The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

That’s my greatest hope. Is that Milewski knows nothing because Mac has required all candidates sign NDA’s.
Letting to names of potential candidates out would be very bad if any of them currently are employed. It’s not good for them if kids they are recruiting for their current job find out they are looking elsewhere.

True, but Wisconsin is a public University and the names of those who applied will be released at some point. There's nothing wrong with attempting to move up in the world. Their existing schools will understand like they always do.

To me, the biggest tell of how little is known on the coaching search is how little TM can actually write about. Half the article isnt even on the coaching search, it is about the players and the transfer portal.

The only tidbit was that Carle and Sandelin said no, which is hardly news, as we all knew would happen and was highly unlikely they would even take an interview bc of their current jobs.

My thought genuinely is that Mac expects and demands the strictest confidence to not make it a circus. Good on him, we dont need a circus, we need a winner.

100% correct. I did see one rumor on twitter that Mac was seated with Dan Muse at a game, but that was one guy and haven't seen it anywhere else.

The basketball team playing in the NIT may slow things down. I assume he's out there right now. Maybe he'll interview someone out in Vegas.

Yep, I expect that if Bucky wons today in NIT, it'll postpone things a little firther, but next week I believe we will have our answer.

True. But while a bit different it was no secret that 2 years ago Tony Granato met with the Seattle front office.

Holy shit. The crash was not unexpected but my god. No improvement over the season, no changes or adapting to game situations. Name the coach: ___________.

Absolutely he is a classy guy. Just didnt get the job done where it counted. I wish he would provide more candid insight about what he thinks the program needs, but I think the only way we will see that manifest itself is in what Mac institutes going forward outside of the HC position.

I just can't imagine the programs needs anything but a new coach and viewpoint. WI is a B16 school, they have tons of money and resources to be on par with UM and UM, the 2 big dogs in the conference. What do they have that UW doesn't have, but needs? I think he's still convinced that somehow he was not the problem.

In the case of Minnesota, Minnesota high school hockey. In the case of Michigan, that U16 camp located a couple of miles down the road that they take full advantage of.

I don't think any school in hockey can completely match up with UMx2, which is why the fact that one hasn't won a title in 20 years amd the other in 25 makes them the two most underperforming programs in all of college athletics. Notre Dame football and Indiana basketball would be the only two challengers that I can think of.

I just dont see Fersch leaving Western Michigan. He is too tied to the state from what I have read for myself.

I also dont see Hastings leaving Mankato. Signed through 28 and I feel like he has really entrenched himself there. Why leave? CCHA is a MUCH easier path to the NCAAs.

To me that Leaves Rohlik, Muse and Larson. I have my doubts about Larson simply because he is also locked up through 28 and has taken over for Motzko just fine, made a champ game and has made 5 NCAAs in a row.

So in my mind it's Rohlik and Muse. Muse bc of ability to jump right into college game and have the USNDP contacts at the ready, and Rohlik bc he may feel he has hit the ceiling in Columbus, being in hockey recruiting nomans land, limited support from the AD and in a pretty darn difficult conf.

Those are my 2 horses.

And I like that the search is quiet. You dont want a sideshow, you want a surgical strike to get the guy being targeted.

Both Muse or Rholik would be incredible hires. I am absolutely astounded by what Rholik has been able to do with the facilities he has at OSU. How he lands the top talent he does is amazing. Muse isn’t a proven quantity at the NCAA level, but he has an incredible resume and is highly regarded. If I were a UW fan, I would be thrilled if they get either guy. And I think they could get either if they wanted them.

These are good points, but they are not fixable and tg thinks there is fixing to do.

I'm not convinced Rholik is an incredible hire. 1 b16 hockey title in 9 years and 2 seconds. A solid hire, yes, but a step below the others mentioned. WI should never finish lower than 3rd in the b16.

I don’t think it is realistic for any program to expect to never finish outside the top three in the conference with all the parity in college hockey today.
