The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I originally thought goal #1 was Diaz's and bit took the slo mo replay to see it was an own goal.

Hulk's handball could go either way.
Oh, I definitely thought it was a hand ball - I was talking about his last touch which actually put the ball in the net. Announcers made a comment about a clever touch from his left foot, but it was clearly off his knee - and looked like an accidental/clumsy touch at that.

Agreed - clear hand ball to control it.

btw I understand the strategy of not wanting to concede a goal in OT, but not sure I'd want to rely on PK's to decide a game.

1 minute + stoppage from Russian Roulette, FIFA style.

Here we go... And the pressure in ENORMOUS on .......

BTW, if Brazil loses, should Vancouver be on alert?

Goalkeepers best friend. Post stop them in extra time, and post stopped them in PK's

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Really thought Chile deserved this one. Brazil better get their stuff together - today's form will not net them 3 more wins.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Helluva shot.

edit: wow even more impressive on replay. Didn't realize it was a volley, and that he looks like a teenager.

According to Taylor Twellman, Mark Geiger is head ref for France vs Nigeria. Awesome.

First American referee to get a knockout round game.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes forward for the MLS referees. After going through the process of unionizing, enduring a lockout, replacement referees, and the constant talk of bringing in foreign referees.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm not very familiar with the workings of soccer referees. Is there some stigma surrounding American referees, like they don't know how to call it at an elite level because they haven't surrounded by elite talent for their games?

MLS referees have been much maligned for years with that exact criticism. There's the belief that, because the level has elevated over the years, that can't keep up and that foreign referees should be brought in. The referees aren't controlled by the league itself but by the USSF (and Canada's CSA) through an organization called PRO. PRO recently hired a former EPL referee to run things and brought in some former European referees as "staff". The referees (including all 3 in the World Cup crew) formed a union called Professional Soccer Referees Association to address problems with pay rates and travel expenses. PRO (and the league) played hardball, forcing a referee lockout for the first few weeks of this season. When that happened PRO used replacement officials, including a couple of the new "staff" members. They eventually settled but there is a lingering sentiment that MLS is trying to rid the American and Canadian refs.

*Full disclosure: I am a USSF referee and know quite a few MLS referees personally and professionally.

Kidnappings will be suspended for 48 hours.

I thought it was funny my wife of all people thought Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" should be the Colombian national anthem. I knew there was a reason I married her beside her good looks.
