Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It's pretty funny, though, if you hear it in your head like Lewis Black was reading it in his humorous, curmudgeonly way (as a parody). Taking it seriously will just kill your remaining brain cells.
I think that's the proper way to take anything she says...like she's a comedian...or like it was something Colbert would say.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

ESPN.com had it's most hits yesterday with almost 20 million unique visitors.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I think I made the crack in the 2010 World Cup thread when we were discussing neo-cons having the quandary of not rooting for America because they hate soccer. Would their heads explode a la the movie "Scanners?"

Interesting to think that if you had said 6 months ago that the U.S. would get out of the Group of Death without Altidore and Donovan, people would likely have thought you were crazy.
Don't know if we can beat Belgium, but this is a pretty good accomplishment for this team

The fact this team accomplished what they did without all of its "stars" with Altidore and Donovan, Dempsey suffering a broken nose and Bradley having about as bad of a first 3 games as possible is incredible.

well, they have more depth and i think we don't give enough credit to some of the other guys on the team. Also, as hockey fans we should know this, attitude goes a long way into dictating how you play and what you can get out of a situation. This is where, IMO, JK has shined. Mentality breeds success... and he's been bring the right mentality for awhile now.

Another look. Yes - it's all Obama's fault
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...erica-from-president-obamas-scandals/?hpid=z8

Warning - it's satire...

But it wasn't satire on Faux & Fiends or other shows where they made the claim.

Is it really amazing that a country that is made up of immigrants from England, Germany and Italy follow the World Cup?

On the other hand, this isn't a sport that originated here, and isn't dominated by Americans, so I'm sure among a certain group of people there's some comfort in just ridiculing the sport instead of trying to understand or support it. Better to demonize it and go back to watching football the way it was meant to be played: with your hands.

She sure loves pushing buttons doesn't she?

I consider her to be an entertainer, and I pay as much attention to her opinions as I would to any other entertainer. For her, any attention is good attention. More hits on her web site drives more advertising revenue. Content doesn't matter, only controversy.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Interesting QF matchup now that Russia-Germany went in the tank would be France-Algeria.

We might in theory see a semi-final match of Netherlands vs Belgium. Lots of sibling rivalry there!

(IIRC, Belgium is half-Flemish and half-Dutch, and there is some ethnic tension, albeit muted compared to some other places...)

Half-French (Walloons) and half-Flemish. The Flamands just had a referendum where (i think) 2M people voted to separate the two, given the economic drag the Walloon side is on the Flemish side. Being a Walloon by descent (Charleroi), can't say I blame them. We're a grimy lot, to be honest.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So where will the Line of Demarcation fall in today's first match?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It's time for the Sweet Sixteen, we begin in the Copa America regional...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

wouldn't mind seeing neymar get hurt during one of his embellishments

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Love Vidal's hair art (somehow "haircut" and "do" don't do it justice).

Hey, the father of the expanding universe was from Charleroi. So, w00t!

Are the announcers at the game, or are they watching this in a 13" black and white monitor? Missed that Brazil's goal was an own goal, and now missed that Hulk's non-goal was off his knee.

I originally thought goal #1 was Diaz's and it took the slo mo replay to see it was an own goal.

Hulk's handball could go either way.
