Germany, while on the defensive for the latter half of '44, rallied in the last minute of stoppage time to force a stalemate. However, in '45 the Allies used their superior positional play and overwhelmed the German defensive lines. When Hitler was sent off in the latter stages, all resistance crumbled and Germany conceded defeat as the final whistle sounded.

In the aftermath, wholesale changes were made in the German leadership.

I listened to a Jason Davis podcast, not sure if it was on Soccer Morning (6/23) or the Best Soccer Show postgame (6/22) but he said to stop with the WWII jokes and all I could do was laugh at him and you guys for all your Japan jokes.

A massive blowout withstanding, Costa Rica will come away with the top seed in Group D, meaning they'll most likely face Ivory Coast.

The winner (or drawer in Italy's case) of Italy/Uruguay will have to contend with Colombia.

so there's a decent chance that a CONCACEF team would make it to the quarterfinals.....

If Costa Rica is indeed the winner of Group D, they would potentially face the winner of Netherlands / Mexico.

I can see that, hypothetically, Colombia might want to finish second, as that would put them opposite Brazil. If Colombia does win Group C, they likely would first play Italy / Uruguay, after which they'd face the winner of Brazil / Chile.

I have to say, Mexico is really looking good. And with Costa Rica playing so well, and the U.S. still in the mix, this is shaping up to be the best World Cup for CONCACAF that I can recall.

CONCACAF has never had more than two teams in the R16 and either Mexico or the US in the QF round. This could be the first time three teams have made the knockout round (technically, even Honduras is still alive) and 2+ have made the QF.

Italy-Uruguay is interesting, but otherwise a bunch of meh games. Uruguay may really regret that last Costa Rican goal. Italy is a hard team to beat when they only need a draw.

Agreed on Italy. Costa Rica-England should be interesting, as England tries to regain a little sense of accomplishment against a team they certainly would have expected to steamroll as of a couple of weeks ago.

Part of me wishes England get shelled because Hodgson is awful. Wish I could borrow the big blue police box so I could bring in Old Bighead from 1980 to manage England like he should have.

This is pretty bad news if you ask me. Do you think it's possible gamesmanship? or do you think they just didn't want to prepare two game plans.


I'm rooting for Portugal in a big way, because I don't see us beating Germany. I think the longer that Portugal game goes without a score the better, otherwise it could get ugly for us.

How is it possible for England's player pool to be crap? They have the best domestic league do they not?

Sidenote, if Balotelli gets another yellow card (his 2nd of the game) does he get suspended for 2 games beyond today or just the R16 game?
