The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Watched all 3 matches. They are better but it's also not the same team as qualifiers.

But that's part of the point - I see Netherlands beating them but I don't see an ***-kicking. I just think it's a little silly that people have been writing them off all tournament.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Have some of you actually watched Mexico during the WC? They are playing much better than during qualifying.

Admittedly, no. Are there any "Thank you, USA" signs in the crowd?

Seriously, though, they have to be rejuvenated because other than a cholera outbreak in Brazil, there's no explaining the draw between those two.

My only consolation is that even with our <strike>more likely than we care to admit</strike> potential 3rd place finish in our group, we still have a better shot of reaching the quarterfinals than they do.

If we do advance, can celebrate even if we lose to Germany? Or is it beneath us?

CONMEBOL: 10-1-3 31/42 (.738)
CONCACAF: 5-2-2 17/27 (.630)
UEFA: 7-4-8 25/57 (.439)
CAF: 3-2-6 11/33 (.333)
AFC: 0-3-6 3/27 (.111)

UEFA sucks.

i know this is your schtick but you could at least throw in that uefa sucks...in south america

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

A fair number of good reasons for the US to not want to try to arrange an easy draw with Germany:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/draw-with-germany--that-s-just-dumb-173606462.html

To sum:

1- Believe it or not, there would be punishment from FIFA. And not just because it was us and the Germans doing it.
2- It would force us to play Belgium, when going for a victory would give us a game against Russia or Algeria.
3- That game against Belgium would be in a really hot location, the Russia/Algeria game would be in the southernmost stadium in Brazil, in more favorable cool conditions.
4- Despite the collusion being a major part of our political and economic principles, and tanking for a "favorable" result is hardly a new idea in American sports, it would ruin our reputation in global soccer.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I don't think that anybody with a brain is talking about the obvious type of tanking that happened in women's badminton in the Olympics. I think people are just talking about playing like the Italians play pretty much every game. I don't think that we can play that way anyway; if we could, we would have beaten Portugal.

first order of business is to get through the first 15-20 minutes without giving one up. gain some confidence and be opportunistic.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

cls, right on. we cannot play that way. it would be a disaster.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

You know I've heard a lot about how Klinsmann has pulled all the right strings with his substitutions but there is one substitution that has now failed twice in games, Omar Gonzalez replacing an attacking player. That lineup with 3 central defenders has now conceded two goals in about 15 minutes of play between the game with Portugal and Nigeria.

As much as we want to be mad about Bradley's bad turnover and Beasley not pressing Ronaldo more...Gonzalez was fresh and didn't take the time to find the one other attacking player besides Ronaldo on that play...
