The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

How is it possible for England's player pool to be crap? They have the best domestic league do they not?

When your stars are made up of non-English it doesn't mean much. There was a NYT article about redoing the EPL standings only using goals scored by Englishmen. Man City would have finished last because the only starter from England on the roster is Joe Hart.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Can they book Suarez and Chiellini both for diving? That was stupid.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

This match is quickly becoming every American soccer stereotype.

We've got a 0-0 game, flops, time wasting, and... biting?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So we have a red card, a "bite", and now a goal that could eliminate Italy.......

Wheeeeee!

I don't think even the most extreme stereotypes include much biting. :D

And Uruguay with the breakthrough.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Good, Italy deserves to lose for all the stalling and diving. Although Suarez and the biting is pretty stupid.

I was midway through typing that post when they began investigating the biting. That was more of me going, "What the F*?" than an actual stereotype. :p

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The cheating scum are eliminated in the group stage for the second Cup in a row. Just a bit of justice.
It was amusing to see the Italian players at the end complaining that Uruguay players were diving and faking injuries. Define Irony.
Don't blame Suarez. He was peckish for a little Italian and he couldn't find an Olive Garden.

UEFA: 7-5-9 26/63 (.413)
U-awful.

I won't shed a tear over Italy's exit. Not a good Cup overall for UEFA (or Africa).

It is interesting looking at World Cup history how there's such a difference in how teams play if they're closer to home or not. Like European teams generally not doing well in the Americas, but being pretty dominant in Europe. You'd expect some difference, but it's pretty stark.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

3 times now for Suarez with this.
Liverpool needs to figure out how to survive without him as I think he should be gone for a while, if not for good.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Seriously, you are taught when you are two not to bite people.... ***

Does FIFA have the balls to pull the "Strike 3, You're Out!" card with this?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Marchisio gets the cherry card.

No hesitation on the Ref with that one either... I think it was justified... The Italian player led with his knee right into the Uruguayan player...

Definitely well earned. It was sneakily done, and he might have gotten away with it if he wasn't so close to the ref at the time, but he pretty clearly went for the shin with his studs. A red card through and through.

While we're at it, the .gifs of all the major incidents in this game are all pretty remarkable. Here's Ol' Chompers going at it:

And here's Mario's actually pretty impressive leaping act for his yellow:

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It was probably missed in my post but if a player gets his 2nd yellow card in the group stage in the same game that he gets his third, is he suspended for an additional game beyond the next game for his team?

Evander Holyfield ‏@holyfield 10m
I guess any part of the body is up for eating.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

If Surarez bit someone when Shankly as at Liverpool, Shanks would've punched his teeth down his gullet.
