The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It is interesting looking at World Cup history how there's such a difference in how teams play if they're closer to home or not. Like European teams generally not doing well in the Americas, but being pretty dominant in Europe. You'd expect some difference, but it's pretty stark.

Someone (538 blog??) did a little more research and found a correlation, not between distance per se, but between how many time zones one had to cross. So for CONMEBOL and CONCACEF they are both already in their native time zones anyway, so that even if USA, say, had to travel more distance than an African team, that extra distance wouldn't nearly matter as much as the time zone change.

I want to say "no", but I'm not sure.

I agree, but can't find any support for that. The best way to think of it is you have three yellows, and are already serving a suspension for two of them. I feel like it should only be one game, but you still have a yellow accumulated meaning you're suspended again if you get a fourth.

If Surarez bit someone when Shankly as at Liverpool, Shanks would've punched his teeth down his gullet.
Bull. Star players have been allowed to get away with stuff by their coaches/managers for decades.

Lemme guess. You think Suarez deserves to get off scott free there, Capt. Disagreeable?
No, I think those calling for a lifetime ban have a pretty solid case, between the biting and the racism and the repeat offenses.

Greece is the word.

EDIT: I told my wife that Greece scored and she goes "Tell me about it, stud." Awesome.

USA vs Germany will be refereed by Ravshan Irmatov of Uzbekistan. This will be his 3rd World Cup match, he reffed Mexico vs Croatia (3 yellow, 1 red) and Switzerland vs Ecuador (2 yellows).

399 yellows in 117 matches (3.41)

27 reds (0.23)
14 penalties (0.12)

Still confused by Geiger being 4th official in Italy Uruguay match and not getting a match of his own in the last round of group stage matches.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Ivory Coast needs a goal (and no more Grecian goals) to advance.

Weird how the upper left-hand corner of the knockout bracket is all CONMEBOL. Winner of Brazil - Chile will play winner of Colombia - Uruguay in the quarterfinals.

Its all a FIFA trick to make sure a UEFA team has a chance to get to the final without facing the powers of CONMEBOL

Clearly this is an east coast conspiracy to have all of the WCHA teams eliminate each other. Err, I mean, CONMEBOL teams.
