The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The question is whether he buys the diving...

I've seen a few cards given for the most obvious, blatant dives, but not very many, and never in a world cup match.

I tried a quick google search asking if a card had ever been given for simulation in a world cup match and got nothing salient.

The following came from a wikipedia entry:

Detection

A 2008 study found that there are recognisable traits that can often be observed when a player is diving. They are:
--- a separation in time between the impact and the simulation,
--- a lack of ballistic continuity (the player moves further than would be expected from the momentum of the tackle) and
--- lack of contact consistency (the player nurses a body part other than where the impact occurred, such as contact to the chest causing the player to fly to the ground, holding his face).

In addition the "Archer's bow" pose, where the head is tilted back, chest thrust forward, arms raised and both legs bent at the knee to lift both feet off the ground to the rear, is recognised as a characteristic sign of simulation, as the action is counter to normal reflex mechanisms to protect the body in a fall.

One of the most blatant, of course, was in a recent USA qualification match in which an opposing player walked past a US player and then suddenly fell to the ground untouched. He managed to get the US player ejected.

Another was when someone kicked a ball in anger, and it hit an opposing player in the hip...and after about a second and a half, that player grabbed his face and fell writhing to the ground. can't remember when or where that happened.

They way this game is going, it sure seems as if Ecuador is the deserved better team.

But Honduras just scored the first goal.

I haven't seen the French brutalize someone that bad since that guy who insulted King Arthur in Monty Python's Holy Grail.

My table shows the percent of possible points earned.

That would be a ***** to wear down there in the heat and humidity.

gotta be for a photo... somebody like Dempsey they would have already flown them in
No doubt. I just think it's a funny. As somebody who's been following US Soccer since 1993, I never thought I'd see something like that.

Never really watched the Last Call but had some time this morning, and it's actually a well put together program. Men in Blazers were hilarious, made me think of something that would happen if John Oliver did sports analysis.

Alexi Lalas seemed to have an issue with Beitashour playing for Iran.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Has Iran had possession in the Argentina side of the half line yet?

You know, if their government wasn't such huge Roosters!, it would be very easy to pull for them to pull off the upset or even a draw somehow, someway. I would say I've got better odds of bagging a Brazilian model first, but crazy things have happened before.

That's easier than you think - an engineer friend of mine was stationed at Embraer for a couple years. Between housing allowance, overtime, etc, he was pulling down about $200K/yr during the stay. In Brazil, that made him a god - he dated MANY models during that stint, and he was 5'4" and looked exactly like country singer Aaron Tippin (including the 70's porn 'stache).
