The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Once again Japan strike early but can't hold a lead; are done in by a quick pair of bombs

Indeed. Question. What exactly does Costa Rica's win do for us in terms of power rankings? I always hear people rooting for the region and all, but want to know why. Thanks.

The rankings include a continental co-efficient. So right now a game involving a CONCACAF team is worth 15 percent or so less than one with two UEFA or CONMEBOL teams.

More importantly, though, are the World Cup slots. A lot of euros think CONCACAF has too many and want to see us go back to either 3 or even 2.5. Better World Cup play solidifies the 3.5 slots we have.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm thinking Ecuador gets a draw, France beats Honduras (though I'm hoping for another CONCACAF win) and Argentina gets a win (though I want a Bosnia win).

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

if i'm not mistaken, there hasn't been a draw yet. that's incredible as well. really, this has easily been the most entertaining world cup thru three days that i've ever seen. just hope it continues.

on another note, here are some team results going back to the '94 world cup:

Team A:

1 DNQ
2 round of 16 exits
2 QF exits

Team B:

2 round of 16 exits
1 QF exit
2 group stage exits

One team is by some still considered a soccer "power". Any guesses at where I'm going with this?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Natal has declared a state of emergency because of rain and mudslides.

The forecast for Monday's US game is 85 with humidity to make it feel like 95. Yippie!

Is A Uruguay?
B=USA?

Actually it's Natal. Manaus is where they play Portugal or Germany. But Manaus will probably be in a state of emergency soon.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I read it somewhere this week: the only way Switzerland is of any use is if you're a Nazi hiding gold.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

team A would actially be england

team B is in fact USA though

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

fair points, really just a rough comparison to say that despite their passion and the EPL, england simply doesn't perform like a soccer power.

I was thinking the same thing about England. They are certainly still good but I just don't see how they are in the same breath as the other soccer powers now.

Spain, Argentina, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, Brazil are all countries I'm taking over England over the last 20 years.

Swiss make cheese of the Ecuador defense in stoppage time.

Of late this is true, but I don't think they are overhyped. I don't see/hear all that much about them being viewed as a legit threat this tournament.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

That was a cruel loss for Ecuador.

There have now been four stoppage goals in the first nine games of the tournament.
The team that has scored first is 4-5 in the tournament.
No ties so far in the tournament is the furthest they have gone since 1934 with no draws.

I think you can trace it to the lesser amount of English stars in the EPL. Back when they dominated in the 60s-80s, team sheets were filled with British (English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish) stars. It's in the mid-80s and 90s that foreign stars started getting into the lineup. The other leagues limit the amount of imported players. Maybe the EPL ought to try that.
