Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I was hoping the Aussies would break out with a rendition of Waltzing Matilda after their national anthem.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Was it just me or did Cameroon's coach look like a complete pedo?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Poor Australia. :(

Given the margin of victory for Netherlands over Spain, goal differential could be key to advancing in Group B. So far it looks like Chile has already picked up on that. Will the road to the knockout round be decided by whomever scores the most goals against Australia?

If Chile and Spain tie, that could easily be the situation, and if Chile just keeps it close against Netherlands, Spain would have to get enough extra goals against Australia to compensate for their -4 today to overcome that AND Chile's margin today, less the margin between Chile and Netherlands.

As an aside, the Netherlands could also be Holland or the Dutch, and they have three different jerseys, while most have two.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Resubscribed because my understanding is that we are going to make it to the next thread based on post differential.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

In case you turned the game off to get ready for the Stanley Cup Final....we have a match again. Tim Cahill scored on a nice header to cut the lead to 2-1.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Oh my God. It is Frey!

And then the Red Wedding in the second half of Spain-Netherlands. I'm just wondering if the USA will be playing the role of Lysa or Littlefinger on Monday....

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Word of warning, I just watched season 4 episode 1 so careful on any spoilers ;)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Wow. Gotta feel safe in brazil. They are doing an EXCELLENT job keeping the explosives out of the stadium.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I love how the reaction is totally that "Spain lost" instead of being that "The Netherlands Won".... I didn't exactly see them as a pushover coming into the tourney... I get that Spain has been the best team in the world over the last 5+ Years, but give the Netherlands some credit here...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

steve nicol just had a good explanation of why mexico's 2nd waved off goal was in fact offsides. apparently if there's an unintentional deflection like that it's still offsides. different than if you were to intentionally play the ball backwards.

I watched that, went slow motion on it and noticed that 18 for Cameroon is running out to try and head the ball, when contact is made, his feet are still behind dos santos.

Holland totally isn't getting their due. They just put it into another gear. However, let's not leave Spain for dead. If they can get a result against Chile and unleash hell on the Aussies, still a shot at second.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The other thing people are not remembering with offside is "any playable part of the body". Lots of complaints on "tight" offside calls when really they're not because that rule.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

personally i think it should be the opposite. if any part of your body is level with the opponent, you are on.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

It is not official but the referee for USA-GHA seems to be Nestor Pitana from Argentina:
Nestor Pitana - Argentina
International matches: 38

Yellow cards (per game): 191/5.03

Red cards (per game): 9/0.24

Penalties (per game): 7/0.18

A 191 cautions in 38 matches! I don't like the way this looks...
