The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Holland totally isn't getting their due. They just put it into another gear. However, let's not leave Spain for dead. If they can get a result against Chile and unleash hell on the Aussies, still a shot at second.

Spain did lose their first game in group stage in 2010, no? that didn't seem to hurt their overall chances. If anything, it conceivably might help them because it would put them opposite Argentina in the knockout phase

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

ya but that was a 1-0 loss in which they dominated the game. they can certainly still advance at 2-1 but if they aren't able to beat chile they are cooked with thar goal differential.

also, wouldn't finishing 2nd put them right in brazil's path for the round of 16?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Picking up from the other thread...

Today's Anagrams:

Colombia-Greece: Mega Oboe Circle

Uruguay-Costa Rica: A Sour Yucca Guitar

England-Italy: Id Anal Gently

Ivory Coast-Japan: Joys To Avian Crap

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Buffron is out vs England. Their #2 keeper is apparently doubtful as well so the Brits may be facing the Italian's third GK.

Adjust your picks accordingly.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Univision or ABC/ESPN??

I do Univision for the announcers. More exciting even if I can't understand everything they're saying.

Colombia on the board early with a deflected shot that finds its way into the net.

But it likely puts them against Brazil in the round of 16.

Which means he has the game of his life. (English doom logic.)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Today's thread title suggestion if we had separate matchday threads.

Greece-ing up Colombia on the Axis of Ivory.

Can Italy cover all the Angles and Saxons?

My Colombia Cote or Many Colors

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

italy to defend more than ever now. i'll pick that as the first 0-0 draw

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Hup Holland hup, maak af wat je begint!

Part Dutch here - Holland are the only international side I actively cheer for after the US, but I have a quiet soft spot for Panama as that's where my mother grew up.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

i need karagounis as a late game sub...never want to see that guy retire

Also that was not a loss that created what hockey fans should appreciate -- a goalie controversy. Casillas looked awful.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Looking at today's schedule, I have to wonder why FIFA wouldn't put the ENG-ITA match at 3 and the URU-CRC match at 6. Doing that you would have a primetime (or close to) match in all four countries. Now you have a day game for both Uruguay and Costa Rica and a game that kicks off at midnight in Rome and 11PM in London.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Hope no one on Colombia scores an own goal that costs them the game. Don't want to see anyone get shot.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

If you have to ask, "Why FIFA..." you should already know the answer.

Normally, yes, but this would appear to COST them money (or at least ratings, which hurts future TV rights). I can understand them wanting to put an England match on TV as late as possible, but this is Italy!

They cost themselves money every time they slight the chance to explode the growth of the sport in the US. And supposedly having a ref give Brazil a spot foul has nothing to do with them making money either. They are simply incompetent.
