The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Don't tell a certain negative nancy on this board that.

There is a difference between saying we have plateaued and blaming it on Pro/Rel. The best thing the US can do is see the MLS programs invest more in their academies and develop more talent to increase the talent pool for the future. Another world cup experience like this and in 10-20 years we'll break through that plateau. I know its tough for all of use to accept this but soccer has not been a focus in the country long enough to expect us to get much farther.

It's funny: I don't think anyone here is bringing up pro/rel, unless it's coming from a person annoyed at the insinuation that pro/rel would help the US (that no one here is making).

I agree with you on this. The best athletes play in the NFL, NBA and other sports. If soccer wants to be king, it'll have to siphon away some of the guys from those sports to challenge the powers of soccer. My wife said we sucked this World Cup and told her quite the opposite. We tied a top 5 team, hung in there with Germany and beat a team that was our boogeyman before losing to a team that is a dark horse to hoist the cup. We far from sucked.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

On another note, who are you guys rooting for in the WC, now that team USA is out?

I'm pulling for the Germans and whomever comes out of the Netherlands/Costa Rica game.

Germany because I'm part German or the Netherlands because they've never won it. Wouldn't mind seeing Costa Rica if they beat the Dutch.

This is already happening, and it will continue to happen. Nobody with an IQ over 40 would let their son play football anymore, and with the permeation of soccer coverage into US households the kind of disadvantaged kids who see sports as a way to get Mama out of Section 8 housing will figure out that there are 50x more the number of multi-millionaire soccer players than hoops players. And don't forget the predatory marketing of sweethearts like Nike -- they thrive on the economy of scale of global marketing, and US sports are a no growth cul de sac. It is in those guys interests to ram soccer down the throats of young boys like an evangelist preacher at a revival sleepover. Add in immigration from soccer-crazy countries and we're on our way. We will always have a enormous, multi-sport appetite but soccer should take its place in the new big three within the next generation. It is probably already superseding baseball.

I'd like to see UEFA suck again...so Costa Rica, Argentina and the Colombia/Brazil winner. Also would prefer to see Germany beat France...

Even if a guy only makes it to the MLS, it's not a bad gig. Probably pays better than a regular day job. Plus, there are a lot of soccer teams around the world if the guy wants to go overseas and make a living.

All my swarthy ethnic forebears are out, so Costa Rica and Belgium for the love of underdogs.

In the dark, petty, vengeful corner of my soul I wouldn't mind seeing Belgium roll over Germany in the final as a hundredth anniversary FU for the Schlieffen Plan.

I am part French, but my German side overran that. :D

God, I hope so. Without cheating and looking it up I'm guessing the MLS minimum is $200k. Please tell me it's not like the old days of MLB where Richie Hebner had to be a gravedigger in the offseason.

The problem has been the amount of money to be invested in programs. The biggest improvement that has been made is the amount of money invested in youth development, the Development Academy system is already doing wonders and will continue to get better with the new MLS TV contract.

Right now, a lot in the media are doing the usual "we need to change things!" speech (that's where my complaint about people coming out of the woodwork is directed at, not at anyone here). But, I think we just need to stay course right now. We've made changes and now we need to take the time to let them come to fruition.

Well you're wrong...I'm pretty sure most MLS players are making less than $200k a year. DeAndre Yedlin's 2014 salary is $80k.

EDIT:
The average player will make $141,903.13 this year. Robbie Keane has overtaken Thierry Henry as the player with the highest base salary in the league ($4 million to Henry's $3.75 million). In an increase from last year, 62 players will make the minimum $35,125 (43 did last year).

That minimum number is up from $33,750 last year, signifying a 4 percent increase.

Taking Designated Players out of the equation, the average player will make $102,661.81 in 2012. Making the federal minimum wage, working 40 hours per week, it would take over 88 months (over seven years) to make that.

And that will honestly be a cycle or two. There was talk on the show I listened to today that the tactical changes are coming, with the U20, U17, U15 teams playing that more offensive style.

Another thing I've been wanting to ask is how come the U.S. keeps producing top flight goalies? Look at Howard, Guzan, Freidel, Keller and even Marcus Hannaman (sp?) played for a stretch in the EPL. We see to get a lot of good goalies.

The short answer? Basketball.

In the 70's it was going to take off because of Pele.
In the 90's it was going to take off because of the World Cup.
It's supposed to take off in the 2010's because of EPL on TV in America.
Now we're already coming up with reasons why it will take off in 2030?

IMO, if you want a reason for the recent rise in popularity, look at EA Sports. FIFA is taking off. High school and college kids across the country spend hours playing it. Dorm tournaments are constantly happening, I've seen groups of ten and twelve people cram into dorm rooms just to watch two people play. Before the WC started it seemed like every conversation I had about teams and players, there would be some type of comment like "He's a beast in FIFA" "I play with him all the time in FIFA" "They're so underrated though in FIFA".

Part of me wants to see Brazil win, since they have so many troubles related to hosting, it would be nice to see them get something out of it other than another massive disappointment.

OTOH, part of me wants to see Colombia in the final, given how much strife that country has suffered.

from the other side, part of me wants to see Costa Rica progress: go CONCACEF! part of me wants to see the Netherlands of van Persie and Robben make the final, while part of me wants to see the Netherlands of de Jong and Schneider be eliminated.

It'll be interesting to see how their performances shake out at the youth tournaments. The U17 team seems to have some real potential.
