The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Does anyone remember the video interview of the Penn State Athletic Director right after the Arena announcement? He made a few inaccurate comments about college hockey, but he did say that the Big Ten would lead to smaller, more nimble conferences. That the Big Ten would break up the conference logjam.

We all knew that, as much as we hated (hate) the idea of the B1G. It wasn't necessary to tear apart the other conferences in the meantime - one new conference did a good job of breaking things up, but two new conferences is too many.

In other news, I'm going to laugh my arse off when no schools from the BHHC get a bid to the NCAA during their first year of conference play, because they have no autobid right away and the other schools combine to freeze them out.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Definitely a mysterious OMEN for UND at this particular time considering they were a major player in dismantling one of the greatest college hockey leagues in the history of the sport.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

I would be all for a nationwide boycott of the B1G Mistake and the BHHC, by the remaining teams in the CCHA and WCHA, and ECAC/HEA/AHA. Let the ******** circle jerk among themselves.

So DU won't get a couple of games with RPI because Seth Appert is the coach there?

Air Force with former DU coach Frank Serratore won't play DU twice?

DU wouldn't get a series with Gwozdecky's alma mater Wisconsin?

DU won't be able to find three teams to come out to the Denver Cup in exchange for airfare?

I think you need to put down the Kool-Aid. You're a fan and obviously emotional. College coaching is a business and these coaches have 30-plus year relationships and networks built up over decades.

The BHHC seriously needs to hire goddard as a PR guy/head cheerleader. His barely-contained glee over this is sickening.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

I don't doubt that. Minnesota will always be an elite program.

It will be interesting to see what Minnesota's Pairwise would look like if they play Penn State & Ohio State eight times [plus potentially in the BTHC playoffs] and then the other Minnesota schools for a majority of their non-conference schedule.

First, pairwise doesn't make you a good program. But to your question, I suspect Minnesota's pairwise will just fine once a school like OSU starts realizing the benefits of Minnesota's hockey recruiting grounds to the extent WCHA teams have. Couple that with intensified rivalries with Wisconsin, Michigan and MSU...and I have no pairwise concerns.

And your program just ****ed on 5 of those relationships to get Miami. I don't see how your program is better off in this new league. You want to explain that one to me?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

uhhhh..... the Sherman Antitrust Act did exactly the opposite of what you said here in your second paragraph. The NCAA, from your words, was trying to PREVENT media contracts in order to ensure admission money at the gates were collected. THAT is what was broken up. With the TV contracts (for the Super League, or ND Football, or WHATEVER the case may be), there's still a choice of enjoying the game between attending (and paying admission of course), watching on TV (assuming a TV station is willing to cover the game, we can include B2 and independent TV clubs), or listen on the radio (many schools have a radio station and/or internet stream, typically produced by a club on campus). Plenty of competition is available. What are you going to break up?

Try to look at the whole picture. The exercise of the Sherman Act over college T.V. football contracts ultimately led to the freedom of EVERY college and university to negotiate its own T.V. football contract, which is eventually exactly what happened, did it not? Other than the suspension of human self interest or the Sherman Act can you suggest any reason why college hockey will not follow the same course?

Because there is no television mandate for college hockey at this time. Once again, you're looking to fix something that isn't broken.

I believe that DU is better off. This probably isn't the time or the place to list all the advantages.

I've posted hundreds of comments over the past year that gave opinions on why DU had to make this move if the opportunity presented itself. You are welcome to look at my previous posts or read the blog.

DU's major issue was that they were willing to make significant sacrifices to remain in the WCHA as long as Minnesota and Wisconsin were anchor members of the conference. Ice hockey is DU's flagship sport and ultimately they decided that this opportunity was too good to pass up.

You should check out their head coach's bio. Shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone, but he might have already heard of this "Minnesota" that you speak of.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

I know I always have a hard time passing up an annual trip to western Ohio. Its all bull****.
