The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

What a shock... a couple dolts from Grand Forks think its a great idea!

And would people stop saying, "at least now you can make the NCAAs." Some of us have been making the NCAAs already... remember that team with a horrible NCAA winning percentage? It wouldn't be so bad if we'd only made it once or twice. We don't want to have a shot at an NCAA spot against other teams that haven't been winning lately. We want a league where we can recruit players to beat the UNDs, DUs, etc. and a league where playing the best improves our game. We want to have a legimitate shot at a Frozen 4, not "Holy Cross" somebody.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

... its direct exposure straight into the living room of the nations top and most concentrated recruiting grounds.

You assume this new group led by UND and DU won't be setting up its own media exposure vehicles. Bad assumption. This isn't being led by Bruce McLeod anymore.

Well said.

Wow. Some real Pulitzer winning research and reporting by Schlossman. I didn't realize that NMU was just as awful as MTU, BGSU, and LSSU for the last two decades. We deserve to be sh*t on because our last league title came in 1991? So, the seven Championship weekend appearances in the last nine years in the CCHA are for naught? Making the NCAA's two years ago? Producing over three dozen professional hockey players in the last decade?

Oh right. We haven't had any hardware to back it up since '91. F* it then. Fold the whole thing up. Shut down the Berry. Melt the ice. Let Walt go back to the NHL.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Three items:

1) Apparently Verses wants in on more hockey. H.E. has been talking to them about a deal too. The question becomes is the New England (Boston) market better than the BHHC markets. This is a harder question than it seems. Boston is bigger and hockey is in Boston’s DNA look at the Bruins numbers. However it is the Bruins driving that ship not College. In the BHHC they are generally College driven.

2) I agree there is a chances this actually helps the small schools. I keep pointing out ways to make geographically more reasonable leagues and all these like sized / minded schools will get an autobid and have a chance to win. Last thing I would do is merge the remnants of the CCHA and the WCHA. I would want to hang on to the existing two autobids. Just pull in UAH and AHA spenders. Get a max of 8 teams then push a deal with the BTHC, AHA and ECAC to get non-conference games that are reasonable travel. Also early on the BTHC games could be seen as potential money makers or money neutral events (you’re the cupcake).

3) I don't think the BHHC is going to be the panacea these programs think it is going to be. I don’t see the T.V. money as the markets aren’t big plus they could lose to H.E. The travel is likely to be the most expensive of all the setups. Then the big somebody has to be last each year. Will some of these fan bases dry up?

Yes, we're all aware of the plans to interrupt the "Shoney's Catfish Challenge on the Bayou" on Versus to bring you a North Dakota vs. Nebraska-Omaha hockey game.

Which is the primary reason UMD will always be invited to any party. Regardless, thanks to a stupid move to leave SCSU and Mankato out...that media exposure will be zero on 75% of Minnesota TV sets.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

What can they discuss? Who's the most screwed?
How to get back to 6 or 8 teams to keep the autobid, how they'd do their playoffs, Where they could hold the conference tournament. There is plenty to talk about.

What do you expect from UND's lapdog reporter. He was probably busy practicing his goose step and working on a new gas chamber design.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

In that case, I guess BU, BC, UNH and Maine should leave Hockey East and form a start-up league with Notre Dame and somebody else. Leave UVM, Merrimack, UML, UMass, NU and PC in the dust. Because that would "create opportunities" right?
Don't forget to take Yale too, they've had good record the last 3 years, they should be included.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

U MN will never be worried about filling the barn with top competitors.

I don't doubt that. Minnesota will always be an elite program.

It will be interesting to see what Minnesota's Pairwise would look like if they play Penn State & Ohio State eight times [plus potentially in the BTHC playoffs] and then the other Minnesota schools for a majority of their non-conference schedule.

And the smaller schools would be better off because now they can form their own conference and get an autobid! Perfect!

Yale leaving where they are now would be like a B1G member breaking off from the BTHC. AIC is more likely to win a national championship than that happening.

Yale is an Ivy...not the footprint we're seeking. I think the new conference needs a whipping boy to finish last every year...let's add AIC :p

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Does anyone remember the video interview of the Penn State Athletic Director right after the Arena announcement? He made a few inaccurate comments about college hockey, but he did mention that the Big Ten would lead to smaller, more nimble conferences. That the Big Ten would break up the conference logjam.

I wouldn't bet against this scenario or any plans like it long term. Schools look out for their own self interest when it comes to college sports.

Two dominoes have fallen so far. Surely more will follow in the coming years.

How to keep their autobid by getting to 6, 8, or 10 teams, who to invite, how to do playoffs without the big boys, where to have the conference championship, who can get the best price on k-y jelling for all the a55 raping about to go down.

You do realize every conference will have teams at the bottom? How long do you really think DU will stay near the top of the new conference and how much hard will it be to climb back up when you don't have the leftovers there to keep your bad seasons still reasonable vs finishing 6th out of 6.

You know 15 years ago before Gwozdecky got to DU, it wasn't a who lot different than SCSU, NMU, MTU, etc. Wonder what will happen when he does retire...I hope your team finds its way to the bottom of the Super 8 with the cockroaches.
