The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

I'm curious if any of his unreleased music will ever be released by his estate. Kevin Smith gave a 31-minute recounting of his week with Prince, and mentions how he's told about Prince having - at that time - over 50 fully produced music videos for songs that have never been released.

ETA: NSFW - language because, you know, it's Kevin Smith.

DMSR

I remember the first time my brother played Controversy for me (he withheld Dirty Mind to see if I was worthy) - we were playing ping pong in the basement. I was blown away and I never stopped being a fan. Saw him at 1st Ave only one time, but I and 9 friends had front row seats 2-nights in a row for the Purple Rain tour due to a friend's dad being a music promoter, saw him 5 times at after parties at Paisley Park, have a bizarre but cool story when we saw him for the Lovesexy tour, and Let's Go Crazy was our school's intro song for the 1985 MN HS hockey tournament due to all of us being purified in the waters or Lake Minnetonka. ;)

This sucks. :(

I used to work with a relative of Prince...we watched that together one day (I had seen it, he had not) at work and he just laughed and said "yep, that is totally him!" :)

Dude... you HAVE to.

Some other great stories: http://jezebel.com/our-favorite-prince-moments-beginning-with-the-time-he-1772334663

I, sadly, don't have any. Closest I ever got to seeing a Prince concert was watching him perform at a Special Olympics opening (or closing?) ceremony at the Metrodome back around the Diamonds and Pearls days. I was too young (6 or so) to really take it in.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

I also remember a friend brought Around the World in a Day to school to share in Spanish class. Might have been the first 'clear' cassette tape ever released? And Purple Rain was so huge around school for the longest time including one incredible summer.

The Lovesexy tour dates in MN at Met Center were in September. I was just a few months shy of being 21 and the 3 buddies that went with were all in varying degrees similarly short of the magic #. It was raining like crazy in the hours leading up to the show. We were stuck in traffic on 494 coming from EP right around Normandale Blvd. As we inched along we realized there was an accident, but we didn't know how bad it was until traffic was diverted off 494 up a ramp and then down again due to the accident not being cleared from the freeway. A semi-truck rear-ended a car. The car was engulfed in flames. Someone was in the front seat of the car and clearly lifeless. Not a great mood setter for a concert.

We had very good seats - 7 rows up on the side. For some reason we decided to try and get into the arena bar which I think was called the O Club? Low and behold a buddy from school was manning the front door and let us all in. We watched about half the show from the bar and were going to head back to our seats when we ran into Apallonia and a pretty small posse I guess you'd call it. One friend said something brilliant (I have to message him to ask what it was again) and next thing I know we're hanging out with her, two girlfriends and 3 bodyguards.

We were invited to an after party at a very nice condo downtown after the concert was over and the typical drunkfest shenanigans ensued, including a hot tub strip tease, various pharmaceuticals, and I s**t you not an appearance by Jerome Benton from The Time.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

The number 9 is almost all Prince news today, which is no big surprise. It turns out that Prince befriended one of their reporters sometime ago. She told some brief stories, no big details, about their time together, including the party at Paisley Park this past Saturday. She missed the party due to a late invitation and he sent her an MP3 of either the entire performance there that night or just one of the songs (listening along while I'm on a work call now).

Should have been permanent super bowl halftime show guest. The world sucks a little bit more with him gone.

That's some good stuff

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

To honor Prince, MTV interrupted regular programming to play (gasp!) music videos. They were supposed to be playing Prince all day, but someone messed up and they played one Fresh Prince video. Oops.

In other Prince news, CNN's Wolf Blitzer eulogized Prince by saying his greatest hit was Purple Haze.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

I thought I read or heard somewhere that he could play 27 different instruments very well. That's just insane.

We lost a legend, a crazy genius, a pure talent. :(
