The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

I thought I read or heard somewhere that he could play 27 different instruments very well. That's just insane.

We lost a legend, a crazy genius, a pure talent. :(

When Dave Grohl was asked if he thought Prince was a better musician than him, he responded with "Prince is a better DRUMMER than I am."

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Incredible if this is the case.

I'm sure it's been edited a couple times today, but I remember reading most of this elsewhere besides wiki:

In addition to his singing abilities (which encompassed a wide range from falsetto to baritone and rapid, seemingly effortless shifts of register[149]) Prince was renowned as a multi-instrumentalist.[150][151] He was considered a guitar virtuoso and a master of drums, percussion, bass, keyboards, and synthesizer.[152] On his first five albums, he played nearly all the instruments.[153]
The precise number of instruments he was capable of playing remains obscure. On his debut album, he was credited with having played 27 instruments,[154] which based on the album credits included various types of bass, keyboard and synthesizer in the total.[155] When asked during a television interview by Dick Clark how many instruments he could play, he responded, "Thousands."[156]

Someone once asked Eric Clapton how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. He responded "I don't know. Ask Prince."

I was asked what it's like being the greatest lover in the world, and I replied, "It's pretty cool! And I hear Prince is good too."

I read that when he graduated high school he was the best performer on every instrument in the band. I think it was his sax player who said the best thing about being in his band was sax was the only instrument Prince didn't play, so he didn't feel as insecure.

One of the channels played that quote last night. :)

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

To honor Prince, MTV interrupted regular programming to play (gasp!) music videos. They were supposed to be playing Prince all day, but someone messed up and they played one Fresh Prince video. Oops.

In other Prince news, CNN's Wolf Blitzer eulogized Prince by saying his greatest hit was Purple Haze.

As bad as Prince's death has hit so many people, these two stations making the mistakes they did are about as apropos as anything could be. MTV is run by a bunch of people who probably don't know much about music these days, let alone 80's and 90's music, and CNN can't get anything right that they put on the air.

CNN also felt the need to have a helicopter feed over his house for a good part of the day, because something was really going to happen that they needed a live aerial feed.

No surprise. Broadcast media isn't journalism, it's a machine for turning gossip and rubbernecking into wealth.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

I remember seeing that live. From my understanding, he didn't let MTV know what song he was doing, nor were they allowed to see rehearsals. If you really pay attention to the camerawork, they cut away ALOT before the background people come into view (they were all wearing almost-see-through clothes, and simulating...actions). I don't know if MTV ever replayed that clip again; they were aghast at what they saw. :D
