Keep an eye on Spock...

From George Takei: As you may have heard, my dear friend Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in Star Trek: TOS on TV and in six subsequent Trek movies has been hospitalized with chest pains. I join millions of fans worldwide in my hope for a speedy and full recovery for Leonard, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Wow. Pull through, Leonard. I'm not quite ready for you to go in search of yet.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Doc and I are probably the only two around here who remember a young Nimoy playing a walk-on in the sci-fi classic Them.

Me too!!!

And every time our HVAC system at work started acting up, it made a sound like the ants.

Live long and prosper.

And also a young Fess Parker in that movie. If you blink you miss Nimoy but Parker has a considerable amount of time on screen.

That memorable ant sound effect (along with the car chase sounds from Bullitt) was created by Billy Mauch. As kid actors, Mauch and his twin brother starred in The Prince and the Pauper with Errol Flynn.

Without looking it up, is he a doctor in the hospital scene with the drunk? I have very dim memories.

K: No he is one of many military types working in an office. Fess Parker was the pilot who was a patient in the booby hatch because he saw these giant flying ants that they thought were UFOs.

Bit of Trivia-The movie was going to be shot in color, in fact the opening credit where you first see the title word THEM is in color. But they thought the movie would bomb or at least certainly not attract much interest so they decided to spend less and go with B and W instead.

That's interesting.

I'd rank the first third of it among the best uses of suspense in any movie.

Compared to the CG movies of today- a very simple concept, a very simple use of special effects and miniatures. But a classic. Keeps you in suspense for 20-30 minutes better than many movies of today. Still spooks me out when Edmund Gwinn(alias Kris Kringle) puts that vial of formic acid under the kids nose and her reaction to it. This movie and the other James Arness role as the Thing From Outer Space gave me nightmares for weeks. Still try to catch them on TCM when I see them listed.
