The Abortion Debate. Again.

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

I can't really say the idea that non-procreative sex and gay sex existing in our society is something I find horrifying.

As others have implied, most individuals I know in their late twenties do not bed hop from one person to the next. Theres a reason the "third date rule" exists in popular culture. The implication is that most people are at least in the dating or courting stage before they have sex.

If you feel the need to wait until marriage, none of my business. I just see nothing wrong with having a fulfilling sexual relationship with people you care about outside of marriage.

Third date rule:eek: Yep, I grew up in a different time where knowing someone a bit more than a few dates was required, usually a year or 2. Also Blow Jobs were what happened AFTER you got married, not before. I may check into being embalmed as obviously I am ancient:p

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

Is birth control going away? Absolutely not - even between Catholic couples. But folks, whoopee should have more meaning than taking your morning constitutional. And can somebody PLEASE tell me why 12 year old girls are looking like Brittany Spears and (some, a small #) are sexually active and a (thankfully) smaller # are getting preggers? For Pete's sake, have we lost our sense of decency?

To be fair, we used to have to get pregnant at that age, so we could raise our kids until the rip old age of 6 before dying.

Ahhh, sometimes I yearn for the good ol' days. :D

Blow Jobs and "after marriage" rarely mix.:p

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

I like how people assume that all of history was like the 1950's. Pretty much every time period has had points where sexual promiscuity was a problem and yet listening to some of you you would think it was a new thing. Hell the 1950's weren't even like the 1950's.

And I dont care what all of you say, people were having sex in high school when you were kids too...and they were drinking and getting pregnant too...deny it all you want it just wasn't bragged about to the point it is today. (well except by guys :p )

If the parent(s) do not want the child, and the state has said that you cannot abort the child, then the state MUST provide an alternative. To me, that means infant and foundling homes where the children are raised either by the state or by a nongovernment agency (we have St. Ann's Infant & Maternity Home down by me). Hopefully, the child is placed with a loving family via adoption or they are educated by the state or NGA through HS and then, frankly, I don't know.

For someone that wasnt less government this sure seems like an odd solution. But hey, we need more orphanages in this country.

I think that is the point-people may did it but it wasn't something that was outwardly accepted and certainly not talked about or expected.

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

The Pope (and the Bishops in Council) are infallible but only in matters of faith and morals.
Such BS. So the Pope and the Bishops Council stance was absolutely right about the goings on in Europe during the late 1930s and into the early 40s? (Yeah, I know, Godwin's Law and all that crap on internet arguments.) What greater morality stance could it take than to oppose the Nazi regime's actions? Instead they chose the easy way out and self-preservation during one the most trying periods in European history. The Church is fallible when it comes to morality.

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

Interestingly the Pope was NOT considered infallible until late in the 19th century.

That and the Pope has to announce that what he's saying is under the "infallible clause", so to speak. It's only been used once since then, to declare the Immaculate Conception of Mary in 1950.

They've backtracked to include a dozen or so statements made previously to 1870 and most Catholic theologians count canonizations (making of saints) as well.

"The Pope is not an oracle; he is infallible in very rare situations, as we know." - Benedict XVI (2005)

The last part is refreshing

Sure, back in the mid-late 80's hs girls were getting pregnant. Teenage pregnancy has been around forever. I've got 3 neices who got pregnant in HS. One even got an abortion. Now in their ealry 20's these girls change live-in boyfriends more often than Alex Kangas lets in soft goals. One even brags about being a switch hitter on her facebook page.

I think today, sex is way too far out front in the media. When I was a teenager, I had virtually zero access to sexually contented material. The internet did not exist - which is HUGE. Cable TV was nbc, cbs, abc, tbs, wgn, usa, espn, mtv, disney, lifetime, headline news, maybe 25 channels total. Maybe TV Guide would have a sexy picture in it. I always looked forward to new Penny's catalog. Sex is a big part of the media programing today. There's no way to deny that. And the proliferation of all these STD's is due to this.

The problem is sex is all about YOU to many unmarried people. To a married couple, sex is all about US. There is a huge difference there, on many levels.

Re: The Abortion Debate. Again.

We are a fascinating culture- we show sex all over the place but then do not want to discuss sex, its consequences or prevention of them with our 'innocent' children who are exposed to sex even when sheltered. Europeans have a much more pragmatic attitude and less silliness about sex. And less consequences...

Watching sex on TV can give me an STD? I better go get checked. Fast.

At least now I don't have to worry about those pesky condoms.

Let me try to put this in pictures that even Sinemax would understand...

If you regularly portray that infidelity and "sleeping around" is fine, jim, and dandy, then eventually the ooze slips out of the pool and gets into the clean water supply, and we all get sick.

Trouble is, how do you get the genie back in the bottle?

Why do conservatives continually stress "family values" while arguing at the same time that "societal influences" are destroying our children? If family values matter that much (which I strongly believe they do) then what's on the TV shouldn't matter squat.

Do you really think it would matter? Kids were getting pregnant in the '50's you know. Even the ones with good families and strong religious beliefs. In fact I remember it happening to a girl I knew in high school whose family was very very Catholic.
