Well, the US did invade Canada, twice if I recall correctly. Once in the Revolutionary War and once in the War of 1812? Both times they were spectacularly unsuccessful.

Darn Canadians!

Should have learned your lesson the first time! :p :D

Oh I see --- but for those of you on the other side this clown who can do no wrong is the greatest leader since Lincoln...or perhaps his biblical namesake?

Those of who have realized he's an empty suit since he first came on the scene give a F.

lulz

I didn't realize the kids were gov't officials.

Only one member of the Royal Family is a "government official." I don't begrudge HIM B1 (or his family) vacations or golf outings, I really don't. But continuing the practice of taking vacations to recover from vacations to prepare for vacations, coupled with closing the WH to tours by tax payers does give off a sort of Marie Antoinette aroma. N'est ce pas?

You have got to be freaking kidding me. Haven't these *****es vacationed enough with their King and Queen Parents. AT LEAST another $115,000 of taxpayer money has been used again to wipe their wannabe royal asses and flushed down the drain.

give me a break with the "taxpayer funded vacation" crap. Obama made millions off his books, he can give his kids some pretty nice vacations whether or not their status requires the secret service to also tag along. But I bet they're enjoying it too, why not?

These what? Stay classy when commenting on kids that are not responsible for the adults of whom your scorn should be directed.

Perhaps, but if Obama is buying the $800 plane tickets out of his pocket while the taxpayers pick up the $100,000 bill for extra Secret Service protection, I can understand why people might think there's a funny smell. If Obama is also covering the security out of his own pocket, then there is definitely no issue. Any bets on whether that is the case?

You know, every time you post, I'm thinking I was wrong to give you the benefit of the doubt a few weeks ago.

Considering the kids were going to have secret service protection anyway, I call it a big fat, "meh." Anyone begrudging them some semblence of a 'normal' life really needs to take a step back.

Considering that security is going to be there whether he's in the White House or on vacation, I'm not sure I see your point.

There are obviously extra expenses involved when traveling to a new location in a foreign country over and above what it would cost to keep them secure in the White House.

I am not really taking sides on this - just pointing out that IF Obama wanted to diffuse any controversy, he could easily do so with what amounts to pocket change for him by paying the difference in costs between travelling and staying home.

It seems to me that the current "debate" about gay "marriage" is a bit narrowly focused, and does not address at all the substantively important "big picture" questions.

What is the "purpose" of "marriage" in the first place?

Is it primarily about the "fulfillment" of the participants?

Is it primarily an inter-generational social institution, one of the primary crucibles in which tomorrow's adults are forged?

I don't think I've met anyone who is "against" gay marriage so much as I've met people who are "for" two-parent families, one of each gender.

That's why personally I've always prefered "civil unions" for everyone, be they heterosexual or homosexual, without the concept of "marriage" attached; reserving "marriage" for a sacramental function instead. Then gays could live together with civic recognition of their "special monogomous bond" and there would be no "discrimination" since heterosexual couples also would get the same civic recognition of their own special monogomous bond.

It is really sad that we've all become so self-centered; the debate is framed solely about the personal fulfillment of the individuals involved, with no thought given whatsoever to the wider consequences for children or for society. Do we really want the raising of children to be separated from "marriage" entirely? "Oh these kids are such a bother, let's just drop them off at the public dormitory and let the state raise them while we go out to dinner and a show."

Lynah, you're being infected by the stupid virus that affects a lot of people with your ideology. I'd recommend vitamins and bed rest. I told you those people are contagious! ;)

Getting on a President or his family's case  for taking vacations shows how empty the intellectual tank really is on the right. Now we're whining about secret service protection, or how a President should pay for it out of pocket?!? Quite possibly the stupidest thing written on these boards and that's saying something!

BTW - As Bush II is the costliest ex-Prez, any call for him to pony up some dough to pay for his upkeep? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?
