Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Or get smoked. Thats the problem. Maine goaltending and D = NO CONSISTANCY. I wouldn't be shocked to see them lose in the 1/4's. Wouldn't be shocked to make it to the HE finals. Either way they aren't going anywhere in the NCAA tourny.

Pretty good synopsis, I agree. At the very least this season the team has exceeded my initial expectations and they have a very young team. Keeping Nyquist will be huge. If he stays, next year they will have a very good team.

Correct on defense and goaltening. As others have pointed out as well, the lack of physical play is also negative.

Keeping Nyquist is the key. We have other talent, but that kid is elite. I don't expect to see him for all 4 yrs but to have him back for next year would be huge. As I said before, they (the team) have exceeded my expectations as well. Not just in the win total, but talent wise. However, Darling has far from exceeded my expectations. Perhaps Sirman will though.

Zis team has only slightly exceeded my pre-season expectations....they need to accomplish more. :) Record wise, they're right on the mark, HE reg finish wise, they may end up 1 notch higher than I thought..........but, I predicted way backthat they would not get out of the quarterfinals....hope I am terribly wrong on that one........but, given the league this year, who can you say will be an easy out...answer ---> nobody. Any one of the home seeds can easily get knocked out this year.....there is almost no home advantage with the league as level as it is.

Not so fast! While we all would agree Maine is not a great team that will compete for a national title, we've seen other mediocre Maine teams get put in the most ridiculous brackets ever and walk into a FF (Clarkson, UMass, SCSU, Maine comes to mind... oh I know I know, Priceless, those brackets were the BEST!!!).

But lately the "anything can happen" situation has definitely changed my thoughts on counting teams out.

Of course, they have to make the NCAAs to worry about that. These next 4 games will be large for Maine's chances.

If Detroit is smart, they will force him to stay another year.:) He does need to put on 5-10 pounds of muscle, and win a NC ;)

Obviously I'm wearing the maroon and gold colored glasses here, but BC is a nasty team to play anywhere and at Conte this year they are usually killing teams (only two losses at home). I know some teams in the bottom of the standings are solid teams but I doubt BC will have trouble at Conte.

I'd say they have a good home advantage.

They weren't the best, and they weren't the worst. Getting sent to Worcester and having to play Ohio State instead of receiving a bye was nice, too.

I don't think that Maine will ever win a NC with TIMMAY at the helm no matter who stays or goes.

I would have to agree unless another Jimmy Howard comes walking thru the door. With Timmy's "system" and coaching philosophy we will need superman in net to win a NC.

Shawn Sirman was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week.

Not necessarily, if he surrounds himself with competent people (Corkum), and listens to them in terms of recruiting and coaching, they could contend for a national title. I agree, I don't think he does it on his own merits. Winning a national title involves a little luck along with many other factors. Being successful (for me), is being competitive in HE and making a trip to the NCAA regional on a regular basis. I prefer to be an optimist.:)

By the way, Maine is 17th in the pairwise. Right now I don't believe that qualifies them for the NCAA tournament.

People in East Lansing had the same thought about Rick Comley before 2007.

They are the second team out right now. The two games against UMA won't help a lot because they only become a TUC by beating Maine. A split probably leaves them out (and they miss the HE playoffs). The Bears ideally want to host Vermont in the HE tournament because they will be a TUC even if they lose to Maine.

I would like to see a Vermont - Maine matchup in the quarterfinal. A Maine - BU scenario scares me to death. Maine does not match up well against BU. Very interesting to see Vermont ahead of Maine in the PWR yet behind them in the HE standings.

Only 3 teams (UNH,BC,Maine), have clinched a playoff spot in HE with two games to go. Amazing. UNH and BC are the only two with home ice in the quarter-final.

Nothing is surpising, that's for sure. If Darling gets straightened out, who knows what's possible. Lets hope thats the case. Not a ton of confidence though. But always optimistic.

Will be an entertaining weekend with all thats on the line in HE. An NU Vermont first round matchup would be nice. Better the chances for a tourney bid with some w's.

Jimmy with the w tonight in a 3-2 win over Colorado. Nice to see a solid effort after the long lay off. Musta paid off spending time in Maine.

The TUC criterion is just a dumb construct,IMO.It's redundant vis-a-vis the RPI,until you get to the 26th team in the nation...Then,all of a sudden,it's a deal-breaker.In many ways,it just compounds whatever inequities exist in the RPI.

If they're gonna use TUC at all, they need to throw out all head-to-head games from that equation. Then,it is never in your best interest to lose.

I'm pretty sure they do take the H2H games out of the TUC record for individual comparisons since they are already counted in the H2H criterion. Anyone want to help me out here?

Rarely is it in a team's best interest to lose. It doesn't seem like a common thing, anyway.

Not a perfect system but a good one nonetheless and everyone knows what they've got going in. If you're on the bubble and get left out, it's tough to really blame anyone or the system given the performance that led to being on the bubble.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Tim said he was going to go with Sirman if he played well on Saturday, he did so... I like 2 guys competing for the job, hopefully it gets Scott going again.
