Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Tim said he was going to go with Sirman if he played well on Saturday, he did so... I like 2 guys competing for the job, hopefully it gets Scott going again.

I agree, competition is good. Darling is wildly inconsistent, and is slumping right now. The rest of the team seemed to respond with Sirman in net as well, putting forth a much better effort than on Friday night.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

H2H gets taken out of the TUC equation. H2H is its own category in the PWR. It's why Union's TUC record will eventually count against everyone but Maine, St Cloud, Cornell and Yale.

Vermont could miss the Hockey East playoffs and still be as high as a #3 seed in the NCAA playoffs.

Because the PWR are always in flux it's never in a team's best interests to lose. After the fact you can look back and say it would have been better to lose...it's why Wisconsin fans are always using their H2H matchup with Anchorage as an example. Problem is, two weeks before the PWR and RPI go final, it's not possible to know how everything will turn out. They could very easily have been Denver in 2006 and 2007 - on the bubble looking in because they lost in the WCHA quarters.

Hopefully it get the D going again. I think you'll see a little tighter game from the D guys w/ Sirman. I'm not exactly thrilled about making a tender change with 2 games left in the season. I agree with the change but it's not the ideal situation going into the playoffs.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

If Maine could win Friday night and pick up 2 points, I would consider playing Darling on Saturday night.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

And if Timmay could coach against the highest levels of competition, Maine would have won in 2007 and Comley might have been sacked.

People in East Lansing had the same thought about Rick Comley before 2007.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Obviously I'm wearing the maroon and gold colored glasses here, but BC is a nasty team to play anywhere and at Conte this year they are usually killing teams (only two losses at home). I know some teams in the bottom of the standings are solid teams but I doubt BC will have trouble at Conte.

I'd say they have a good home advantage.

I also disagree with the "no home advantage" theme.

Maine has won a grand total of 4 true road games this year.

11/14 @ Northeastern 6-2
11/27 @ Lowell 3-1
1/29 @ Vermont 6-3
2/27 @ Merrimack 5-1

They also have one road tie with Vermont.

There's a huge home ice advantage in Hockey East this year. Only UHN has a winning record on the road (6-5-2). Only BC, UMA and Vermont have a chance to get to .500 this weekend. PC has won only one game on the road all season. Merrimack has won 2. Pop Quiz: What other Hockey East team has only won 2 road games?

As a whole, the league is 35-76-15 on the road. 40 games under .500 is a good indicator. Home ice is slightly important.

Maine's Brian Flynn named Hockey East Player of the Month for February. He had 10 goals and 5 assists for 15 points.

I give up. I see teams with 3 and 4 road wins in HE but nobody else with two. Who am I missing?

I don't know if I agree with this. I think if Sirman plays well he should be rewarded with the playing time. The more experience the better going into the playoffs.

I like to see both, but this should have been done earlier in the season imo. Ideally, you want to see two goalies playing well towards the end of the season so that you have the option to pick the one who's really hot and go with him until he falters....then at least you have confidence in the second goalie.....ala 1993 with Snow and Dunham. I would go with Sirman friday and give Darling a chance to show he's the number one guy by coming with him on Saturday. Lets face it, Sirman is probably not ready to handle the playoffs unless there's something more to him than any of us know about at this time. You have to give Darling the feeling that he needs to play out of his head to show he really is the man....subtle head games with goalies. Its good to have one horse to ride if he's consistenly good, but apparently Darling may not quite be there yet.

Vermont possibly missing the HE quarter-finals and still receiving a NCAA invite would be unusual. Has this ever happened before to a team in HE? I can remember teams losing in the quarterfinal (Maine for one), and still go on to play in the regional.

No.

It appears that Vermont is going to make the playoffs, as they have 24 points and would have to be passed by both Merrimack (likely) and UMass (not). They also win the tiebreakers with BU and Northeastern.

Thanks for doing my homework for me.It makes sense now.

I'm thinking that the system can be tweaked,a la how the RPI is set up,to ensure that no win ever works against a given team.I'll leave the math to someone else.

Looking at the individual comparisons, many of the bubble teams appear to me to have pretty solid footing against Maine.Just shooting from the hip here, but I'm guessing that Maine will have to reach Boston and to win one there to breathe (fairly) easy about the NCAA's.
