The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

I can't blame them for not ever forgetting that game. Maine losing to BU in the 95 title game is one of the worst things as a Maine fan that I can remember and will never forget. The game was not even really close, like the two other title game losses, but losing the title to a conference rival was awful. UNH not only lost a heartbreaker but lost to a bitter conf rival.:D

I hear ya. Providence has always been my favorite FF/regional host city, always a good time to be had there, but after that game, which finished mid-to-late afternoon, I just got in my car and headed home. I just couldn't bear to spend the rest of the day hanging out in that town watching all those BU fans celebrating. Would have been agony.

In the years since, i've gotten to know a bunch of BU fans, and really like them; don't have the intense burning hatred for all things BU that I once had, so it probably wouldn't be as big a deal. But back then................................

I disagree that it wasn't close. 3-2 after the second period, and if Maine had somehow managed to score the tying goal in the third, you might have seen a different outcome. But BU scored pretty early to make it 4-2, and that just deflated the team. Couple that with the fatigue from the Michigan 3OT game, and this one was over.

What was the year Maine had like a 5 on 3 or 6 on 4 power play at the end of the game and couldn't score to tie it? Or am I remembering that all wrong?
It was a 5-on-3 at the end of the third period against Denver. Then we pulled the goalie, so we were skating 6-on-3. Bummer.

Nice to see cheerleading gets the play of the week on wabi over Diamonds game winner on Sat night. Really? ****ing cheerleading! What a joke!

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

As for the fans, most coming from the non-mainiac section in the balcony, they were pathetic!!! Over the course of 20 plus years I have been known in my early days to be among the most vocal, but throwing crap on the ice is just awful! Time for a U.Maine policeman up there. We were sitting below them in the 2nd row just behind the net, and had stuff from above flying down on us too!

I would like to say as a student that there are far worse things than throwing stuff on the ice. I am in my third year at UM, which means after coming in thinking I would be watching Frozen Four caliber teams, I've watch Maine in two losing seasons, the frustration has building for that long. Although I was not one to throw the towels on the ice because I know the rules of possible bench misconduct, I think it was awesome that we had something to celebrate, and we did. Before this season, I might have only seen 6-8 home wins, and I've been to every home game that hasn't been over break in the last two seasons. Also in the student sections defense, once the message was played of the possibility of a penalty was played, ALL but one person stopped, and that person was boo'd as loud as Johnny Damon's return to Fenway as a yankee. That's what I have to say.
GO BLUE!!!

Not us! You heard da man....we are squeaky good. :)

To you newbie students and fanz....ya shuda been at the Alfond in the early 90's and late 80's. You think beatin UHN was fun....couldnt compare to humiliating Parker and his boyz and even Providence had some great teams in the late 80's, and some great games at the Alfond. Almost brought the roof down on more than a few occasions.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

From my vantage point, this was another horribly inconsistent game from an officiating standpoint - the call that put Denver down by two players was just awful - "delay of game" - I don't recall that the player threw the puck down the ice, I think he just batted it with an open palm. I don't remember what put them down by one player just before that, though.

I was there and remember it very well. As a Denver fan, we were obviously upset in the building at the time. But in looking at the replay after the game, Kotyra made the right call. Gabe Gauthier closed his hand on the puck and threw it out of the zone. Very gutsy, correct call. The prior call was an interference call on DU's Matt Laatsch that was a little bit borderline, but legitimate, also on further review.

Fortunately, Gauthier got one shot past Jimmy Howard earlier, and DU rode it to victory.

Maine's best chances (other than the correctly disallowed goal) in that game were a crossbar shot in the last minute by Jon Jankus, and when a Maine player (Ben Murphy?) tripped over the blueline with no one near him on what would have been a clean breakaway.

Here's a good recap of that two minutes - perhaps the most exciting two minutes in NCAA history.

Does anybody remember the home NCAA playoff series to make it to the frozen four in Lake Placid, maybe in '88? I was 12, and I think it was before they blew the sides out on Alfond, when it got LOUD in there. The end of the clinching game was just five minutes of the loudest noise I have ever heard. It lowered slightly when whoever we were playing scored an inconsequential goal, and picked right back up again before the ensuing faceoff. Just constant, and so loud I can't describe it.

The only thing that broke it up was the Lake Placid chant... half the arena did "LAKE!!!!" and the other half countered with "PLACID!!!" When's the last time the ENTIRE building was screaming a chant in unison? God, I love it.
