The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

It is fun to see Maine back in the hunt (I know my sister, a UMaine grad, is thrilled). My only suggestion for improving the rivalry would be to move one of the Maine home games to Portland. That would balance out having one of the UNH "home" games in Manchester every other year.

Except Portland is 2 hours away from Orono, and Durham to Manchester is only a 40 minute drive. Fan support would be a helluva lot worse, especially from the student section...we like it the way it is. How about you guys have 2 games at the Whitt? That seems fair to me

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Didn't Maine sweep BU in the RS,though?Or am I wrong yet again?(The USCHO BU schedule archive doesn't go back that far,BTW.)

BU had a ton of talent, Maine had the biggest heart and will ever to play at UMaine in Chris Imes. I'll bet he played 40 or 50 minutes in that OT game against Michigan. Maine never had a chance

exactly, why give up home ice advantage to a league rival by moving it closer to durham than orono... unh should be playing their annual game against dartmouth in manchvegas... they are foolish to play maine there...

This is spot on. UNH playing Maine in Manchester is ridiculous. It's the program sacrificing home ice advantage in hopes of a bigger gate (which is probably marginal), and screwing over most of the fans - especially the students, who normally "sit" right behind the visiting goalie and are relegated to the rafters.

As a UNH fan living in Manchester, Portland would be nice because it's a shorter drive, and I don't much care for Alfond (as noted, I am a UNH fan). Having said that, I would never want to see Maine give up a home game to play UNH in Portland.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

I've never been more sure of anything than walking into the TD Fleetnorth Garden Center for the game against Denver. That one still stings.

I agree 100%. After the speeches on senior night and tough wins against, harvard, wisconsin, and bc there was no doubt in my mind that Maine was going to win it. I figured it would be a comfortable 4-1 or 5-1 win. If only johnson and murphy would've taken their chances. Was the penalty that Denver scored on really weak? I seem to remember barnes got called for a really cheap obstruction type call where the guy might've dived but don't remember 100%.

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

Maine went 3-0-1 against BU in the regular season. 3 of the 4 went to OT.
Actually, Maine was 2-0-2 against BU that year, although Priceless is correct that three of the games went to overtime. The game that didn't go into overtime was won by Maine, 6-5.

I was told that Imes was on the ice that game for 55 minutes...wow. Plus the steller netminding of Blair Allison.....after the game EVEN the fans in the stands were tired....great game to be at....and of course win....!

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

No Maine loss compares to Minnesota in 2002 with Denver in 2004 a distant 2nd........

I've only been to two Frozen Fours in my life....2002 and 2004. Yes, all, you'll be happy to know I've learned my lesson. I'm never attending again, since clearly, I'm bad luck. :(

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

I was there and while it bothered me you had to know Maine was going to lose long before the game was played. BU was the start to finish best team in the nation and Maine played 2 games in one in the Semi. The Michigan game was awesome and I'll never forget that. 2002 bothers me way more than 95

I know in my heart you are right. Losing at that point and time in a title game to BU even though I knew Maine had little chance of winning just sucked.

You are right at least in 2002, most of us felt Maine should have won that one, and they way the game ended made it worse.

Was that the "skate in the crease"/goal disallowed game? I get my disappointing 2000's finals games mixed up

No, that was the horrible penalty call on Maine in overtime, that led to Minnesota scoring a PPG to win the game. The skate in crease was the Denver game in 2004.

The "skate in the crease" was against Denver in 2004.
2002 was Piotrowski deciding to get one more shot in at a dead man.

2002 = lost face off in the d-zone results in game tying goal vs. minnesota and subsequent loss in ot

2004 = skate in the crease

I don't have a problem with the leg check call in the neutral zone (I am in the "a penalty in the first period should be a penalty in overtime" camp) - to me it was an obvious infraction but I still have issues with the non-call on Hauser right after that. It was a terrible "miss" by the ref and a perfect opportunity to even things up.

That final was the most painful one not only because of the way it ended but because of the raw emotion of the players putting it all out there all season long.

The loss to BU was pretty much expected after the thrilling triple ot winner against the Wolverweenies.

exactly, schutte definitely stuck his leg out and clipped the guy (and was rightly called for it), but 30 seconds later, hauser clearly clotheslined jackson which should have been called and was not

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

I seem to remember in 2002 game, the ref put his whistle away about midway through the third, with the game tied, and let the boys play. Then during OT they called that penalty, didn't seem very consistent, and the non call that followed made it a horrible call IMO.

What was the year Maine had like a 5 on 3 or 6 on 4 power play at the end of the game and couldn't score to tie it? Or am I remembering that all wrong?

Re: The 2nd official 09-10 Maine season thread

That was the Denver game at the end.

From my vantage point, this was another horribly inconsistent game from an officiating standpoint - the call that put Denver down by two players was just awful - "delay of game" - I don't recall that the player threw the puck down the ice, I think he just batted it with an open palm. I don't remember what put them down by one player just before that, though.

As for the skate in the crease, that was the correct call as determined by the rules at the time - the NC$$ changed the rule, but not after another whole season, IIRC.
